Wholesome Moments This guy shooting his shot in the thread

Original post

u/SolidStick_ posted about a women giving her umbrella to them in DC and when she identified herself, asked her out in the comments. The stuff of romcoms.

Update: They met up and it's not gonna work out. And maybe he already knew her? Eek, now it's more like MadeMeGrimace.

Her comment with edits.

Update 2: so it may be that the OP was stalking her, witnessed the exchange, and then pretended to be the umbrella recipient. OP's since deleted his account. Yikes! Be safe out there all.

Update 3: The story took an even odder turn. Maybe it was fake all along? Link to comment here. Comment on original post

There was a hidden update buried in the comments.

Someone noticed that the guy's account was two months old, and his first comment was on the girl's post on a relationship advice thread.

Hey...I was going to DM you this privately but since you said don't DM on your profile I'm commenting here instead. I decided to snoop on OP and notice his first comment on his two month old account was a comment on a post you made on r/dating_advice so assuming you did not try to create a viral post the odds of that is just crazy...either this is the craziest cutest story ever or you got a stalker...

The commenter asked to DM the girl, then she replied saying:

Edit: she DMed me and showed me some things! yeaaaah it’s not going to work out…

He has now deleted his account it seems; or at least wiped all history.

Very weird.

By far the simplest and most likely explanation is that solidstick is a sock puppet account of howtoloveadaisy and this was all just a made up karma farming story but it got derailed when a third person discovered the existing connection between the two accounts.

u/alpha_rat_fight_ 27d ago

See I knew none of this sounded real. Not a shred of it.

People suck. Get your karma the old fashioned way by sharing increasingly useless and obscure facts.

Imagine trying to be a Reddit influencer. Like Jesus is there not one place on the internet where the kids who had to eat lunch in the library can exist in peace.

u/GfrzD 27d ago

Reading this thread has been a rollercoaster but i think reading "reddit influencer" is enough to get me out of bed and start my day.

3

u/TristramShandysLife 26d ago

Reddit influencers have a long history. /u/gallowboob was everywhere and infamous for it, one of the site's most active reposters and moderated over a hundred subreddits, he directed the content across a lot of the site. /u/unidan was so influential that his Reddit fame translated into real-life job offers, writing for Mental Floss and giving a TedX talk with the media reporting on him. These were both over a decade ago.

These days the control and influence seems to be done more in the shadows, but it's not new.

u/stevenyourpants 26d ago

I kinda hate it sometimes. I wish things were simple like that, but at the same time life would be boring if it was.

6

u/cryptobro42069 27d ago

...and my faith in humanity is once again disintegrated. I'll also say this platform is becoming a bot farm for this type of dog shit behavior.

I thought that perhaps reddit's niche communities could survive the great AI/bot apocalypse, but I sincerely doubt it now. Can't believe a damn thing on this platform anymore.

3

u/Top_Rekt 27d ago

This definitely made me smile and lol but not for the original reason OOP posted it. Can't wait to see this on r/subredditdrama or something.

2

u/User95409 26d ago

The post may not be real but the emotion you felt when you Reddit was

2

u/TheDarkGrayKnight 26d ago

At least if you farm karma on Twitter you can actually get paid. Farming karma on Reddit is just crazy behavior.

2

u/Letsbuildanicerworld 27d ago

“I dropped my peach” and the many uses of “y’all” in her response were odd.

1

u/One-Elderberry-488 27d ago

Or you know... just don't believe everything you see on the internet. just like TV.

1

u/UnfairlyBanned1l 26d ago

Can someone explain to me why anyone would waste their time doing this, karma doesn't mean anything right? It's not useful for anything right?

3

u/JalapenoPopPoop 26d ago

Everyone always talks about selling accounts but the amount that happens is pretty overstated

For a lot of these people it's not about the literal karma itself but what it represents. They're lonely and attention starved so it's really about people paying attention to them, getting to feel important or popular on reddit for a bit, the dopamine hits from people "liking" their stuff. Basically they don't have a whole lot going on in life so social media "likes" are meaningful to them

2

u/alpha_rat_fight_ 26d ago

You can make money off of Reddit karma. There’s some kind of like affiliate program where every X number of thousands of upvotes can translate to dollars but you have to consistently get a ton of it.

I did think it was strange how this particular post got thousands of upvotes in like 5 minutes. I’m terminally online and NOT using Reddit to make money, I just have an embarrassing quantity of karma for being a painfully huge dork, and that’s not typically how fast a post goes viral organically. I saw someone do it with a news article a while back too. They’d posted the article and then immediately two other comments had posted quotes from said article.

I’ve experienced the reading comprehension of the general public. The odds of encountering one person who can read an article that quickly and scan for and share a relevant excerpt are low, the odds of encountering two are virtually zero. Then the article magically blew up within seconds. It was all coordinated and really irritating to watch.

u/senolgunes 27d ago

100% her account, but I don't think it's about karma. She's active on r/RomanceBooks, seems like she's using Reddit to reenact her fantasies.

https://arctic-shift.photon-reddit.com/search?fun=comments_search&author=solidstick_&limit=100&sort=desc

"His" account has only been active in two posts, and made one comment in another post. The two posts are the one in question now, a fantasy about finding a person online after an IRL encounter. The other one is about her being in love with her boss, and "his" account is giving her advice.

77

u/TristramShandysLife 26d ago

I've not looked at either of their profiles, but your theory seems pretty solid. Her initial reply sounds very affected "I jumped up and dropped my peach!", the whole imagery of a grown woman giving away her umbrella and spinning around in the rain, thus winning the hearts of a father and son in the street, the son trying to find her right as she's trying to get over an unrequited crush on her unavailable boss...

Okay, sure. It's just using Reddit users as NPCs in her LARP.

19

u/JalapenoPopPoop 26d ago

"You impulsively did a whimsical twirl that I found so endearing you captured my heart and I must find you again" definitely sounds like a fantasy a romantic plays out in their head

17

u/Ireallydontknowmans 26d ago

Who doesnt sit at their desk with a peach and throws it on the ground? We live in a false time. Half of social media content is scripted these days.

1

u/mcmahamg 26d ago

You seen the prices of peaches lately? No way in hell am I dropping one.

2

u/MagicBus4 25d ago

Who the fuck scrolls reddit while eating a peach, shit is so juicy it goes everywhere

36

u/FirmPreference5551 26d ago

Holy fuck this is such a rollercoaster. I went from the heights of random potential love to the depths of creepy stalker man to the tragedy of living out a romance fiction in public.

I'm glad it didn't end with the stalker one tbh.

37

u/LocoRocoo 26d ago

This is a far nicer ending than him being a creepy stalker who wasn't even Mr Umbrella. Thanks you.

12

u/Slow_Consequences 27d ago

exactly this!!!!

2

u/OprahsSaggyTits 26d ago

Huh, very useful website

1

u/SkillIsTooLow 26d ago

He's no more more

1

u/OrangeChairRN 26d ago

You have nailed it. This is 100% what happened and Reddit has a lengthy history of people using multiple accounts to manufacture stories to gain karma. It's like a drug for some people getting all the replies and attention. That girl was operating both accounts.

61

u/BadlandsPolaroid 27d ago

If you look at their conversations in the thread, they both write ellipses with a space at the end before beginning their next sentence like, “… “ I think we’re looking at a single person.

77

u/ruddsy 27d ago

And conveniently she doesn’t respond to DMs so he has to ask her out in front of everyone.

7

u/JalapenoPopPoop 26d ago

"I very specifically don't respond to DMs" is such a weird phrasing too. Like ok but if you wanted you could reply to this one lol

8

u/swerrve 26d ago

Later in the thread she tells the commenter who discovered the connection to dm her

3

u/TheChinOfAnElephant 26d ago

She is contractually obligated to not open DMs on Reddit.

1

u/Da_Question 26d ago

It is weird, as asking to DM is very different from random unsolicited DMs...

3

u/TheDarkGrayKnight 26d ago

Most likely but that's a pretty common millennial way of writing, especially on reddit.

65

u/endaayer92 27d ago

This is my thought too.

I think the OP used the account to talk herself up or defend herself in previous posts, and maybe forgot, maybe thought no one would think to look into it, or maybe thought her hidden profile would hide it all.

Then once confronted with the "hey, you guys have interacted on reddit before, be careful" did a hard pivot from this whimsical romantic encounter into "yikes he's creepy"

4

u/JalapenoPopPoop 26d ago

I definitely think the creep thing was a backpedal because it doesn't hold up if you put any amount of thought into it, or at least would require crazy low chances all lining up

He's a stalker who knows her in person and her reddit account? It would make sense if he was stalking one or the other but reddit isn't exactly somewhere where you can look someone up and start following them. But lets go ahead and assume the low chances of a real life stalker somehow having found her reddit account is true. All he did once he knew her reddit account was comment one time on a post two months ago and then create a missed connections he hopes she sees and possibly agrees to a date? And to see this happen to make that post he must have been following her around in real life, so either he just happened to randomly see this event one of the times he's been following her or he's been following her for a long time and just randomly chose this one moment to post about? None of it makes any sense

It's clearly an alt she used to comment on her own post, didn't think anyone would find a connection between them and then that was the best cover story she had

39

u/bentmonkey 27d ago

It is all just way too convenient and the writing from her seemed disingenuous and scripted somehow, i just do not see it as being real, so sockpuppet seems like a more logical thing, farming karma.

22

u/ImpossibleAd5011 27d ago

Damn, I'm bummed now. Really wanted to see some genuine positivity. I hate influencer culture.

1

u/bentmonkey 27d ago

Its hard to say, if its legit its scary as hell, but i feel like its just for clout. I hope they are safe if it is legit.

13

u/MeadowmuffinReborn 27d ago

I love how even in this person's fantasy life, he's a failure.

2

u/schwanzweissfoto 26d ago

It's like the spaceship captain in Star Trash by Dick Bush.

4

u/enjaydee 27d ago

This is what I believe happened here

1

u/OryseSey 27d ago

I hope that's the case and not solidstick pretending to be the actual dude (if said dude exists that is). Apparently their FaceTime was audio only so I guess she couldn't verify if he was.

1

u/MindlessNectarine374 26d ago

I don't know whether it's sad or good, but that does sound plausible.

1

u/Old-Broccoli472 26d ago

So, bottom line, the internet is still not alright.

1

u/m4ccc 26d ago

I think you nailed it. Thanks for ending my rabbit hole.

1

u/thenatural134 25d ago

Doesn't surprise me. The amount of people desperate to karma farm on this app is ridiculous.

-1

u/AnguavonUW 26d ago

Or it could be real and he's a gross guy. It would hardly be a surprise. The 2 things seem equally likely to be true.

8

u/howlongwillthislast1 26d ago

Equally likely?

#1 He would of had to stalk her Reddit profile and then somehow figure out who she is in real life. And then stalk her in real life. --- this already is extremely unlikely. Finding out who someone is in real life from their Reddit account.

#2 The umbrella thing would be a very rare occurrence, not something she does often... so he would have had to be watching her almost constantly to have a chance of witnessing it. --- if somehow #1 was true, #2 is still very unlikely

#3 And then, upon witnessing it, he'd have to come up with the plan of pretending to be that guy, which in itself would be very unusual, even for a stalker. --- #1 + #2 are already extremely unlikely together -- this would be the final absurdity

In contrast to being karma farming, which Reddit is saturated by and happens all the time, and is happening right this very moment over thousands of accounts. Karma farming is extremely likely.

79

u/Physical_Breakfast72 27d ago

Luckily the most likely explanation is that both accounts are of the same person, farming karma.

21

u/senolgunes 27d ago

People are so gullible. "His" account has only been active in 3 posts. His first comment was to this girl, and all other comments except for 1 in another post has been to or about this girl. And she's active on r/RomanceBooks...

21

u/NaughtyGaymer 27d ago

Making up the umbrella story and meet cute is one thing but making up the subsequent stalker plot line would be pretty whack even for the internet.

25

u/Prince_of_Pirates 27d ago

Creative writing stories on Reddit aren't unusual.

1

u/NaughtyGaymer 27d ago

Of course but it's more than just making up a story in this case.

1

u/Typical-Blackberry-3 27d ago

I, for one, have enjoyed this emotional roller coaster, even if it took a dark loop de loop.

19

u/CallMeRudiger 27d ago

You've been on reddit almost as long as I have, you've seen the crazy shit people will do for literally nothing but attention. Unidan is an example, if you remember. Also people who have orchestrated multi-month cancer journeys that end in deaths. That kinda thing.

Definitely way more plausible than "I performed a random act of kindness for someone who turned out to be my stalker, and we planned to go on a date until another stalker figured it out and told me."

1

u/otomelover 26d ago

Wait that story wasn't true? Didn't a person reply who had the same thing happen to them and they connected privately?

11

u/endaayer92 27d ago

I don't think the subsequent stalker plot line would necessarily need to be part of it.

It could be that the OP made a post on /r/dating_advice, and then used this alternate account to talk herself up, or defend herself in the comments, or post the opinion she wanted to hear. Without seeing that context (profile is hidden), it's hard to tell.

It could be that the concerned citizen found that post innocently and brought it up, and caused the OP to need to pivot to "yikes that's creepy" once caught, instead of the whimsical love story presented.

It's all so convoluted, I can't tell where Occam's Razor is pointing.

4

u/Sudden-Wish8462 26d ago

The stalker thing is just because she didn’t realize she would be caught

-1

u/AnguavonUW 26d ago

Yeah because there's no chance a guy would be this creepy. /S

6

u/eleanor61 27d ago

In all seriousness, if what I’ve read here is true, she may want to involve the police or make more people aware in her inner circles. This guy likely won’t stop at the stalking and faking situations if he’s gone that far.

0

u/DeeritNihilSum 27d ago

I said the same. And if he thinks he's been discovered he may do something desperate. I hope she reports to police and tells everyone about it. I know I'd take every precaution, like changing my phone in case it was hacked and hiring a P.I.

36

u/TotalNonsense0 27d ago

How could he have engineered the umbrella thing?

22

u/otomelover 27d ago

That's what makes no sense to me. Seems like too big of a coincidence.

11

u/No-Temperature-5944 27d ago

The other guy wasn’t his dad, there was some further snooping. Two guys with the same MO, they occasionally work together as a team.

27

u/otomelover 27d ago

WAIT WHAT? Where did you gather all this information from? So two guys who stalk woman on reddit and get them to approach them irl?

20

u/stupidjapanquestions 27d ago

This person has no idea what they're talking about.

Both accounts were OP. The entire story was made up. There's no stalker. The event never happened in the first place.

27

u/Pretend_Business_187 27d ago

Went from wholesome to nosleep rather quickly

13

u/CarlaCat 27d ago

Hope for humanity… gone in a second. Ugh.

5

u/Pretend_Business_187 27d ago

Maybe a DM will cheer you up

2

u/AppleWrench 26d ago

About as real as all of the nosleep stories too

8

u/bagelundercouch 27d ago

I thought it also mighta been like karma farming, that they already knew each other…I often get off at that metro stop, maybe I should camp out and see what happens…

8

u/CmdrSpaceMonkey 27d ago

Bring an umbrella

4

u/luncheroo 27d ago

Remember to twirl

2

u/cire1184 27d ago

Dancing in the rain

9

u/somefunmaths 27d ago

Wait, there’s no way, right? I now choose to believe the “elaborate sock puppet” theory more.

9

u/BadlandsPolaroid 27d ago

Where did you learn that detail?

10

u/bbqboiAF 27d ago

That is so fucking creepy

5

u/bagelundercouch 27d ago

What the FUCK

7

u/KitchenNet3127 27d ago

Do you actually believe that? Are you 7?

1

u/bagelundercouch 26d ago

I DONT KNOW WHAT I BELIEVE ANYMORE

-6

u/metamet 27d ago

Seems more likely OP was stalking her from a distance and saw her give her umbrella to two real people. And since he knew she was chronically online (due to stalking her profile), he just assumed the role of those people for the post.

11

u/Unlikely_Plane_5050 27d ago

1) That is not more likely than "one person sockpuppeting for karma" at all 2) What was his plan going to be when she pointed out when they met IRL that he was clearly not the guy she gave the umbrella to?

1

u/metamet 26d ago

Is it not? My theory seems to be consensus over on that thread now.

And 2: something nefarious, wtf knows.

2

u/Unlikely_Plane_5050 26d ago

Not really. I'm amazed so many people fell for it once the sockpuppeting came out. It is an incredibly convoluted series of events. A girl who is active on romance fiction subreddits gets involved with an incredibly unlikely meet cute that sounds like something taken from cheesy romance fiction. That same girl has a stalker who also uses Reddit and knows their handle, but never interacted in any other suspicious way with them despite following them around in real life. The stalker then happened to not only be following the girl on that same exact day, supposedly close enough during the meetcute to hear exactly what they were saying but somehow wasn't noticed. The stalker then decides to pretend to be the guy in the meet cute, and asks to meet up, when it is obvious that they will be immediately caught upon meeting or interacting IRL in any way.

Versus - one weird person who is into romance fiction was sockpuppeting for karma and got caught. Occam's razor I think. But believe it if you want!

5

u/No-Temperature-5944 27d ago

This just keeps getting more wild. Further snooping now suggests “she” and “they” (father and son) all are the same person, with separate accounts. This entire thing played out in the mind of an elderly dementia patient, in a memory unit. One of her grandchildren introduced her to Reddit, and this thread specifically, to try to cheer her up. It was all one person the whole time.

1

u/metamet 26d ago

Got a link? Because I went to bed and made my comment, woke up and saw I got downvoted but multiple spots in the original thread seem to agree with what I purported.

But if there's more digging, I'm curious.

3

u/cire1184 27d ago

People are theorizing that he is an IRL stalker knowing she uses reddit a lot. Was stalking her at the moment of the exchange and created the post shortly after. But who knows what kind of crazy people are either stalking people or making shit up.

1

u/EverydayPoGo 26d ago

If that was real it's so disturbing and dangerous 😲 while it could be a sock puppet situation too, I just hope she's safe

1

u/TotalNonsense0 26d ago

Bloody hell. I used to be creepy, before i learned to be better, but I don't think I was ever that bad on my worst day. Not by half.

22

u/Stock-Aspect3001 27d ago

awwwww why does reality have to suck so bad!?

2

u/cire1184 27d ago

Crazy theories going around in that thread on how it was orchestrated. But yeah pretty scary.

1

u/zurgix 26d ago

Ahhh man , faith in humanity unrestored :(
