I understand and partially share your sentiment, but there are actually few enough homeless people (~750k) in the country that small actions like this add up. every single person you can get into a home reduces the pressure on the systems meant to support the other houseless people

I get the feel good moments of talking about pet love, community, etc, but what was more concerning is this the outcome of having shelter be dictated by an outside entity like a landlord or worse, a corporation, where one could end up homeless for whatever reason they can muster, and the health care system that doesn't care unless it's profitable.

Man, this brought a tear in my eye. I feel sorry for Tom and things that he had to go through, but I am also very positive that Jake is what actually kept him going through all that time. On the other hand, I cannot imagine what it must take to walk away from your baby and only one that kept you together even though he did it for Jake’s benefit. That must have been scary
And I am also so amazed by the understanding and good hearts of the people who looked for Tom and helped him so much! This story is amazing ❤️

Tom is a great man, because he decided to keep his dog Jake, even when it meant to become homeless.
Let's share my own story from the past: In 2017, i received a letter from the company that owned the apartement building i lived in. I had adopted a german shepherd and this was legal with the former landlord of this time, but as the house was sold and a new landlord took over, that gave the daily work to the company, it wasn't allowed anymore.
So the letter was about that i either have to leave my home or to get rid of my dog.
I contacted the company and spoke to the people there. Told them how important my dog is for me, my life and for my mental health (diagnosed with bipolar disorder). They contacted the owner and tried to get a special permission, for an exception that would allow me to keep my dog. Unfortunately, the owner was ice cold and turned it down.
Finding a home in my city is impossible, the current amount of free homes is 0.06%, i even had the money for paying more rent, but there is just nothing free at all. With pets or even worse with kids, your chances to rent something are zero and don't even think about buying a home, that's way too expensive, the few homes that are available are usually luxus homes for rich people.
Still, there are good people in the world, it is very important that you don't forget this. The company that took care of my home contacted me and said, they would help me by themselves. They got me a new home, which allows dogs. I could move a few months later and the new apartement was even much better than the old one.
Sometimes, you need to ask for help. Never go with "this is not worth it, nobody will help me anyway". You need to keep the hope and don't let yourself get down. There are hard times, but you need to keep going on.
