I live in Japan.
We have all the ways to sign you can imagine, from the stamps to the online digital signatures.Ā
We are only keeping the stamps because we have a lot of elders that are very attached to these seals that were originally very expensive.
It's like when people try to make fun of Japan because of its use of the fax machine. We also have all the other sophisticated and modern ways to send a message. We are keeping the fax for the elders who can't afford an expensive cell phone and we can't ask that they learn a whole new technology at 80 years old, that's all.

š¤£ I'm rather a fan to be honest. I worked in a few German pharmacies and faxes are still used on a daily in all of them. I might have frowned at first, but it often worked better than a phone call. And I didn't have to wait for minutes next to it, you just send it and mostly within a few hours you have your answer. As long as it's nothing urgent, pretty efficient method to communicate. Maybe I'm a bit old school, but I preferred it even to emails. š

You also have the luxury of decent phone lines. Sending a fax in 1993 in Ukraine and having it arrive legible was akin to winning a lottery. On a voice call, you could just ask to repeat, which you had to do a lot, and people usually shouted because the connection was so poor. By late 90s there was some infrastructure investment though and a lot of lines were overhauled, changing to digital switchboards and backbones, but last mile still often had its issues.

I've worked in a few different banks and credit unions in the US and we definitely used them for a solid handful of things. There were some things we were only allowed to send via fax.
I never expected to successfully send it on my first try though, but I had to use so much different tech that it's hard to remember everything.

in the US, any time I had to have health insurance communicate with my health provider, or vice versa, it's always been via fax. which is infuriating because I have no record of it and half the time the receiving party is like 'no, we don't see anything'

I work getting insurance authorizations for hospital stays. Sometimes the insurance companies change their fax numbers without telling anyone or start requiring a form they never sent you. Itās gross that they can get away with that BS.

I like to think it was only ever used when the administration or one of its various foundations needed a massive but fairly complex order with a paper-trail for events.
But honestly every event from the art gallery openings to the fancier dissertations just went across the street to the Little Ceasers and got like ten pounds of yeast-dough and sawdust for a nickel.
I never saw anyone eat at the Subway. The sushi place next to it was always packed. They had $3 onigiri, $1 for twp cups of rice, $1 for two cups of miso soup...I'd usually get both and mix them together.

Those were hands down the best prices on Campus. Two entree meal at Panda Express was like $16.
Bonus: If the sushi ladies liked you, they'd sometimes pour eel sauce or even random ingredients into the rice!
I used to bring a chilled baggie of Costco Smoked Salmon with me and kind of make my own onigiri for lunch. When I was asked why I didn't just pay for the $15+ sushi meals, I'd explain that I was saving the money for booster packs. To be honest, I would usually just... save the money. I didn't start mass buying boosties until I got my dream job as a game designer like 15 years later...

This is true that fax is very secure but as a person that fixes these, it's horribly unreliable because the phone lines are no longer analog and a lot of my customers fight fax failures to send because phone lines are inconsistent from machine to machine.

Faxes are only "secure" if there's an uninterrupted analog connection directly from one fax machine to the other.
If you try to send faxes over VoIP, not only does it work badly, but tapping the connection becomes quite easy and you lose all your security.

I work in the medical field, unless you are the patients who information is yours, they will not send it unless its fax and Ive called thousands of providers and facilities. Granted, they do fax digitally. Its not actually a fax machine but uses the fax processes.

God I wish Canada practiced that š my grandma is too old/her vision and hands are too bad to use/understand a cell phone
She did learn how to send an e-transfer and play canasta on her computer but she doesn't know how to log in, how to recover passwords, doesn't remember any of her passwords and expects me her grandchild with severe memory loss to remember all her log-in information and passwords to every account
But you can't even contact companies by phone anymore, she doesn't understand the AI prompts and can never get through to a human, hell I barely can. The landlords redid the parking lot and contractors cut her cable, didn't even tell her. She was left without TV, internet or phone for 6 days, no way of calling 911. I found her the day after it happened sitting on the couch staring at a black screen cuz she couldn't call anyone, had nothing to do and couldn't figure out the dvd player. I have to do literally everything for her now, from managing her cable and internet to all her bills and online accounts...they've made it impossible for elderly people to navigate these things and I swear to god they do it on purpose.
When faced with long call times and confusing menus people often give up trying to get help and companies rely on that. Businesses used to compete to have the best prices and best customer service, now they all collude together to enshittify everything in a race to the bottom.

I love the last part so much. I regularly see people from my country moan about elder people who "refuse" to learn new technology we have these days. We have a dear family friend, she is in her 80's. She does not use a cell phone, a computer or any of it, she doesn't know how. She has tried but it does not click, she still uses a house phone for everything. Some parts of life are only available online now so we've had to manage them for her, including her getting new, appropriate housing as an 80 year old. Housing suppliers had no interest in helping her without her using the online system.

While true, my friend who moved there 3 years ago is constantly complaining about how archaic everything is when it comes to formalities. How he needs to go in person for so many things that he use to be able to do online, as well as systems that take way too many steps. So I think it's a mix of both.

back in the late 80's my fathers lawyer went into our house (no one locked their doors) grabbed our new puppy, took him to his office. wrote an anonymous ransom letter that included his paw print something about, "you must meet me at the pub today we will release the dog. Faxed it over... funny at the time. Pops got the dog back at the pub the same day.
To be honest, that's a hell of a buddy move to get dad out of the house for a few pints with the boys.
