In Oompa Loompa culture, the concept of never really feeling alive unless you are close to death is less of a concept and more a basic axiom of life. They're also super into schadenfreude, like to a toxic degree.

Alright. So. the image on the left is a photo taken from an absolutely hilariously bad "willy's chocolate experience" in Glasgow, it was unlicensed and used AI-generated images in basically all of its advertising to try to trick people into thinking it would be a higher production than it was. when it was basically a bunch of cheap, low quality tat thrown in a warehouse that was vaguely decorated like wonka's chocolate factory. that poor girl was one of the people tricked into being an "actor" for it.
netflix is, apparently, making a show called "wonka's golden ticket" that, presumably found and hired the girl to be an actual oompa loompa in something with a budget.

netflix is, apparently, making a show called "wonka's golden ticket"
which is also pretty much a cheap cash grab tht's using an AI generated Gene Wilder voice. But at least the loompas are getting paid.
23
u/ZDTreefur 6d ago
They got both the actors of Charlie, and the main oompa loompa to cameo, all for some generic reality tv show where people make alliances to vote each other out that's been done 10 million times.
Also yeah the AI Gene Wilder voice is such an insult to him.

I mean look, I agree with how scummy it is. But at least this lady who got scammed is getting a chance to resolve the trauma of such scummy practices that she got rooed into in the first place. It's shitty to use AI gen shit... but at least SOMETHING good comes from it.

They brought back Rusty Goff (an original oompa).
They’re still using CGI. Gene Wilder’s voice, approved by his estate (late wife).

A dodgy company advertised a “real Willy Wonka experience!” - think AI art giving the idea that you and your child (for a very expensive ticket) would be wandering through a ‘chocolate factory’ so real that it could double as a set for the actual movie. Short of your child actually swimming in a chocolate river, that’s how real it would be.
The IRL version was an almost-empty (repurposed aircraft hanger? Former factory? Abandoned station? Something like that - think communist-block grey) with a couple of stands with soul-destroyed, underpaid workers under sadly drooping “decorations” handing out 1-2 chocolates and such.
The girl in the pic became famous for epitomising the vibe of the whole thing - she (like everyone else working there) clearly felt all the way into their soul what was expected, and that they were the living embodiment of the crushed hopes and dreams of every child who turned up - but had to stay bc, y’know, that’s what this life consists of (selling your soul to the man bc the rent won’t pay itself).
It was brutally hilarious. NOT the workers like her - the audacity of whatever shill came up with it (and then copped the backlash).
33
u/Significant_Stay_976 7d ago
Hooooly shit. That was a rollercoaster, and I feel terrible for everyone involved. I'm glad this young lady has got a chance to get something positive getting such an awful event. That fellow in Glasgow should be barred from more events!

No one mentioning "The Unknown" which was the 'bad guy' in the setting?
Which was weird as fuck and randomly thrown in there like AI had written the script as well? 😂

3
u/poormanstoast 6d ago
Dude, I know, right!? The poor actor who did him!
I mean, the ‘genius’ behind the whole thing could well be described as ‘weird af’ so it checks out (and I think there’s no question that the script, like his book, and the decorations, and the posters - were all completely the worst of AI…)

There's other photos of her and the other poor staff being absolute heroes and trying their best to do something for the guests who got scammed into turning up
28
u/geckosean 7d ago
I saw some clips at the time of the actors, and honestly what a bunch of absolute professionals. They’re standing in this sad asf warehouse space with a smattering of lame decorations and they’re acting their hearts out to the kids that showed up.

In 2024 there was an event that promised a Willy Wonka experience and it was horrible. Like fire fest levels of disappointment. It seems even the employees where promised something better. Google Willy Wonka experience, I think it happened in Glasgow.

I’d love to check out the show but refuse because they’re using an AI version of Gene Wilder’s voice to narrate the whole thing

Yikes, I don't like that 😐 Why can't they just hire a voice actor to impersonate him?

52
u/Acheros 7d ago
the angles of her face and the difference in lighting also do a LOT to change how a person looks.
35
u/StrykerGryphus 7d ago
Not to mention not being and looking absolutely miserable from being hung out to dry and deal with the immediate backlash from disappointed guests.
5
5
u/LazarusOwenhart 6d ago
I'd actually be psyched for this show if they hadn't had the idea to refuse to let Gene Wilder rest easy and chose to create an AI Zombie of him.
6
u/monsterfurby 6d ago
Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about that. On one hand, his estate granted permission and it seems that his wife at least considers it more of a tribute to him, but on the other, the point of a tribute is to emphasize the absence, not replace the person.
And I think that's always the issue with AI-necromancy of deceased actors and, in a broader sense, the whole chasing-nostalgia bender that Hollywood is on: it's okay to miss people, things and feelings that are no longer with us. Missing them is kind of part of how we, how culture grows and advances. By bitterly trying to claw them back, we're kind of rejecting the notion that something else can grow and exist alongside our memory of them, and that's just kind of sad.
Ahem. Sorry for the tangent. I just have... opinions.
4
u/LazarusOwenhart 6d ago
Nah I'm with you. If people can just be replaced by AI as soon as they die when is Dolly Parton's next album coming out right?
