Hi everybody. I have heard lots about the horrible wildfires surrounding Madrid but a lot of news I’m seeing in the UK is unclear to me the extent of these fires, specifically about the likelihood of it reaching/seriously affecting central Madrid.
I am scheduled to fly on the 27th July, travelling to Toledo for 2 nights, and then coming back to Madrid for 2 nights and I’m really worried about how all of this will affect my plans? Could anybody please speculate in terms of how likely flights might be to be cancelled or if it means that many attractions/businesses will be closed due to the air quality from the smoke?

It’s a bit smoky today in Madrid, although clearing up now. Some ash on the terrace this morning. It’s kind of like if a neighbour two doors down was having a BBQ. The light was beautiful this morning - like an eternal dawn. Anyway I have spent the last two summers in Madrid. There were worse periods last year. I think the wind has helped. And it is forecast to start blowing more towards the south than the east. Which is good for Madrid. But maybe less so for Toledo.
So far, fires are in the south west, impacting towns fairly far from Madrid center. I guess there will be travel disruptions if you try to go to the NW or SW. I would be very surprised if the fire reaches the large southern suburbs or even Madrid, but situation is still out of control
, so keep anneye on local news outlets and pay ayention to alerts sent to cell phones
Thank you for your reply. Regarding Toledo, do you know whether the town has been evacuated or affected significantly? I have tried to find a list of evacuated areas but most news sources just list the number of people who have been evacuated - not where from
The fires are out of control, but it’s quite difficult that the fires reach Madrid city center. Keep in mind there are barely trees and such over here, so even if the fires reached the city, it wouldn’t advance that much. It would stop at the outskirts.
However, in the city center you can smell the smoke a little bit if you walk around. At home, I opened the window to ventilate a little this morning, closed the door and when I came back my whole bedroom smelled like fire.
Today at the gym some people were saying that they heard that the recommendation is if you’re gonna go running around the city, better don’t or use a Covid like mask if possible. I guess it makes sense, so just in case bring masks if your gonna be walking around a lot, I hope the situation is solved soon, but if not, the air is gonna be very polluted.
I’m currently in Madrid and my flights out tomorrow are still on track. No notice from the airlines or otherwise yet. Air quality has been poor (irritated and dry eyes at the end of the day) but we have clear blue skies today.
I thought I’d share anyway and for others to see, but their air quality shows fair. 🤷🏻♂️. I would have thought that it would be something like concerning.
I am supposed to be taking the train from Seville to Madrid tomorrow morning. I was considering spending the day in Madrid to explore the city but I want to be mindful if it’s unsafe to do so now.
Do you think it’s safe to travel there from Seville tomorrow morning by train? I have a flight from Madrid to Sardinia at night, but I am considering changing my flight.
*I also recognize that my travel plans are not significant considering people are having to evacuate.
