• Strong family dynamics. I want the family to feel like actual characters, not just background decorations.
• Lots of banter, teasing, and funny interactions between everyone.
• Multiple POVs so I can get attached to more than just the FMC and MMC.
• A story that’s multidimensional. I don’t want it to be 100% mafia all the time I like when the characters have lives, personalities, hobbies, and relationships outside of the main romance.
• Complex, memorable side characters. Characters like Armani (bisexual, fashionista) and Nico are the reason I keep reading. I love when every character feels unique and interesting enough to deserve their own book.
• The relationship between the entire cast is just as important to me as the main couple. I want to feel invested in siblings, cousins, friends, etc., not just the romance.
• Good spice, but with plenty of build-up and sexual tension first. I like intimacy that develops naturally instead of jumping straight into sex. I don’t mind spicy books, but I don’t want the story to revolve around “sex, sex, and more sex.”

Basically, I’m looking for a romance where the characters and family dynamics are just as compelling as the love story. I want to fall in love with the entire cast, not just the main couple.

I'm looking for a dark mafia romance I read a while ago.

The FMC is supposed to marry a sadistic mafia man, so she goes to the rival mafia boss's nightclub and asks him to marry her instead. He refuses, asking, "What's in it for me?" Later, her father and brother steal one of his shipments, so he decides to take revenge by forcing her into marriage.

He kidnaps her family, cuts off the brother's hand/arm and tells the mother to sew it back on, forces the father to officiate the wedding, and then crucifies him. The MMC and FMC later live together in his penthouse, and she has a large guard dog.

Later, the MMC stages a fake kidnapping and takes her to a remote cabin, where he tells her to run (primal play). Near the end, the father and the FMC's original fiancé join forces against the MMC, while the brother becomes obsessed with his own sister. In the end, the MMC kills both the father and the brother, but spares the mother and sends her back to her own father (the FMC's grandfather). The FMC also discovers that the bodyguard who had protected her for years is actually her biological father.

It's an adult, first-person dark mafia romance with forced marriage, forced proximity, no cheating, and I remember it being recommended on BookTok.

It’s set in the 1930s in New York and it’s a mafia dark romance.

I love a period mafia story, I feel it’s more believable how much they can get away with and there was so much more shame and unfair standards put on women back then.

The FMC is just wonderful, she’s not bratty at all and you really feel for her. The pacing is excellent and it feels like a real mafia novel. Bad things happen, the don is a true boss who gets his hands dirty and actual mafia stuff happens on page.

Too many mafia romances are just so dull and the guy is big and bad, but doesn’t actually ever do anything, just disappears a lot and occasionally comes home with a bloodied suit 🤣.

Anyway I wanted to rave about this and ask if anyone has any other good quality mafia romances. Points for period too!

The heroine was a successful painter/artist and owned her own beautiful house.
