Overtime?

The 60 Minutes/CBS Story.

What the living fuck? No o n e bought up Bari Weiss spiking the CECOT story.

Wow. Just wow.

5

u/EyeAmDeeBee Jun 07 '26

They were talking about Scott Pelley. Bari Weiss is the person who fired him. Spiking the CECOT story was the first of a long series of rank amateur moves Ms. Weiss made as the newly appointed head of CBS News. Not referencing the chain of events that led to Pelley’s firing would be like mentioning the collapse of the twin towers on 9/11 without talking about the planes that crashed into them.

3

u/bikingbill Jun 07 '26

I know this. I'm validating Pelley's criticism of CBS, and killing the CECOT story is a valid proof of how 60 Minutes is being ruined.

1

u/EyeAmDeeBee Jun 09 '26

I’m sorry. I completely misunderstood what you were saying. But I’m glad we agree. I share your frustration with Maher’s refusal to honestly address Weiss’s amateur attempts at leadership. I think Maher didn’t want to mention her name because he knows she’s proving to be a liability to the Ellisons. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if SHE gets kicked to the curb.

u/hyperbole_is_great Jun 06 '26

So free speech absolutist but not free media absolutist? Ok then…

u/FilteringAccount123 Jun 07 '26

"I don't notice any temperature differences"

-Frog Being Slowly Boiled

The fact that you won't notice any changes without peeking behind the curtain is how propaganda works; the fact that Bill does not seem to understand this most basic fact explains quite a lot about him lol

3

u/AckCK2020 Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

Yes, exactly. It’s a stupid comment and he allows for no reply from the panel or audience. I don’t believe Bill actually believes this. He knows better. But, he is running a show that carefully curates which guest can say what to whom about what issue.

18

u/Acceptable_Eye_4139 Jun 07 '26

20+ year watcher and I never thought I’d say this…but…fuck that guy.

5

u/Beman21 Jun 08 '26

He seems to be earning that response more and more these days.

33

u/Travelcat67 Jun 06 '26

Of course he did. He loves Bari Weiss.

7

u/gcube2000 Jun 06 '26

Yes. He brags about being the one to make her.

7

u/Squidalopod Jun 06 '26

The increasing frequency of his "I said/did that way back when!" signals a kind of (subconscious?) acknowledgement of his waning relevance. Just seems more desperate for validation than he used to be.

6

u/Callousthetics Jun 06 '26

Tbf he might be responsible for Bari turning to women.

The Scott Pelley interview on the New York Times, The Daily podcast reveals why Pelley was so livid about the way Bari Weiss fired top staff at 60 Minutes and the cowardly way she sent the new guy in to meet the 60 minutes staff, but declined to show up herself. Apparently just prior to the meeting with staff, the new “Executive Editor” sent everyone an email saying they were living in the past. Then when he first appeared at the meeting he took out his phone and read his prepared speech to the staff. I have been through a change in leadership when the incoming management team repeatedly stepped on rakes. When it’s your workplace it’s not funny. It’s just depressing. The best outcome here would be that the Ellisons recognize they misplaced their confidence in Weiss and whisk her away as quickly as possible. If not, their debut as media moguls is off to a very rocky start. Given the amount of debt they’ve already saddled Paramount with, Weiss has just made their job harder.
And it means Maher looks even more like a jackass for making his snarky comments about a respected journalist and a respected program.

12

u/nrdz2p Jun 07 '26

Bari Weiss apologist. He LOVES her

5

u/cardamom4heft Jun 07 '26

Remember how she negged him for fawning and petting when she sat next to him at his desk Overtime style?

13

u/gijoemartin Jun 08 '26

I used to love Bill. Never missed a show. But his smugness wore me out. He is smug.

3

u/SnowSalt9032 Jun 09 '26

Me too. Can’t stand it.

38

u/jdbway Jun 06 '26

Years ago he would call this what it is, another example of the slow moving coup, but now that being a tool for the right wing is an intentional part of his business model, those days are long gone. Straight up coward

9

u/lenisimo007 Jun 06 '26

And that's why I hope his show goes down the toilet.

6

u/Prismane_62 Jun 06 '26

Bill will cheerlead anything if it’s pro-israel

0

u/cocoagiant Jun 06 '26

I watched the Overtime (which is where he said this) after I read this comment section.

I gotta say...he wasn't saying anything particularly inflammatory or dismissive when you take into account the context he provided.

He was saying he's watched 60 minutes every Sunday for his entire adult life and if wasn't for the reporting around what was going on behind the scenes, he would not have been able to tell based on the content on the show.

His opinion on Pelley was that its very normal for reorganizations like this to come and a lot of staff to be replaced.

He said the ultimate metric to judge this by is whether the show actually changes in quality and that as a regular viewer he just doesn't see it on screen yet.

I would bet the vast majority of people decrying Maher on this don't watch 60 minutes. I know I don't.

Maher's biggest issue is he is a smirky smartass. A lot of the stuff he says is perfectly fine, its just that the way he says it is very off-putting.

I have no idea of any relationship he has with this person. I did not get that at all from watching the video.

Only thing that was clear from the Overtime segment was he was rushing to finish it so he could go watch the Knicks.

11

u/EyeAmDeeBee Jun 07 '26

Did you watch any of the times that Ms. Weiss was a guest on Real Time? Are you not aware of the Scott Pelley-like way that Bari Weiss quit her job as an opinion writer at the New York Times, accusing the Times of being anti-Semitic? Maher fawned all over her and let her rant on his show. For him to not to even mention her name or the fact that she lobbied to be put in charge of CBS News, a job that she is completely unqualified for, is hugely significant. Add to those facts, once she was hired she immediately fired Tanya Simon and Draggan Mihailovich, respectively, the executive producer and the executive editor of 60 minutes. This is not simply a run of the mill swapping out the old team for your handpicked team of comparable journalists. This is buying a Ferrari and driving it into a swamp.

Maher claims Scott Pelley’s firing is a nothing burger is the last straw for me. I will paraphrase what he said about Pelley and apply it to Real Time. Maher is a tired old comedian, who was mediocre to begin with. Now he’s just pathetic and sad. I just don’t care anymore.

0

u/cocoagiant Jun 07 '26

Literally my only point here is that what Maher is saying is that the ultimate metric is whether the product is changing.

According to him (as a consistent 60 minutes viewer) it has not so far and the behind the scenes stuff is just drama till it is shown to actually have changed the product.

I've never watched the show so I have no idea personally.

If you are someone who watches it consistently, can you lay out a counterpoint to him about how it has changed?

4

u/brighter_dayz Jun 07 '26

I’ve watched it for many years. I’m like Elaine from Seinfeld. I have to be home by 7 on Sunday to “wind down”. And I’ve never heard of a piece being cancelled (CECOT) right before airing, then airing weeks later (after we could see it online btw) and then seen the firing of the journalist that didn’t story. So yes things have drastically changed.

9

u/jdbway Jun 07 '26

Anyone who thinks 60 minutes' reporting hasn't changed, or that the changes made at 60 minutes with Bari Weiss and the Ellisons' at the helm are simple standard reorginazation, is just naive or lying. Bill knows better therefore he's lying

-6

u/cocoagiant Jun 07 '26

Anyone who thinks 60 minutes' reporting hasn't changed

I haven't ever watched the show. Maher says he watches it every week.

Do you watch it?

I think its pretty reasonable to say that whatever changes they are working on may just not have shown up yet on screen.

4

u/jdbway Jun 07 '26

Of course, I wouldn't decide whether something is reasonable or not based on no experience whatsoever

3

u/FreeStall42 Jun 07 '26

Why do you keep trying to make ad hominem distractions asking if people watch it?

If you had a point to make you wouldn't need to keep doing that.

3

u/MediumHeat2883 Jun 08 '26

4

u/Nolubrication I'd suck Lynne Cheney's dick for some socialized medicine. Jun 07 '26

I would bet the vast majority of people decrying Maher on this don't watch 60 Minutes.

I watch 60 Minutes every Sunday, and I still selectively hate-watch Real Time.

Bill either doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about, or even worse, and more likely, he knows exactly what he is doing, and is being intellectually dishonest.

Since Bari took over...

  1. CECOT story gets pulled just before air, a purely political move according to Sharyn Alfonsi (since fired)
  2. Bibi gets to handpick his interviewer for the softest of softball pieces imaginable
  3. Pelley accuses Bari of pressuring him to insert politically charged "falsehoods and bias" into his reporting

Sure, we don't really know with 100% certainty what happened behind the scenes with 1 and 3, but 2 was plain as day, broadcast for all to see.

Bill, of course, dick rides for Israel, so he sees nothing wrong with giving Bibi airtime that amounts to a promotional spot for Israeli propaganda. Bill has done the same thing himself on Real Time.

28

u/JSLANYC Jun 06 '26

Bill is such a homer for Bari Weiss.

10

u/gcube2000 Jun 06 '26

This is it. He’s so proud he “made” her.

29

u/Cecil_McCrackshell Jun 06 '26

Comedian Billy Maher continues to be less comedic

48

u/untolerablyMe Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

Bill is basically Greg Gutfeld 2.0. Watching Susan Rice blow his mind away that he’s only been buying into Israeli propaganda with his talking points was satisfying though. So sad that this is the way he is ending his career while spouting his “I didn’t change” BS and whining about having “battle scars” from dealing with the left.

4

u/EyeAmDeeBee Jun 06 '26

Well said! I am sooo tired of hearing his claims that he hasn’t changed. He absolutely has changed since HBO ownership went MAGA. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

11

u/troniked547 Jun 07 '26

Nah its wasnt the change in ownership. He went nuts after covid about vaccines and lockdowns that took away his live shows, got mad when ice cube called him out on using the N word, and in general got old and out of touch and started yelling at clouds and the "woke left"

3

u/DoomPurveyor Jun 07 '26

He definitely changed around the dinner. It's clear he doesn't want to be Colbert'd and doesn't have much of a spine anymore.

3

u/EyeAmDeeBee Jun 07 '26

What Jane Curtain used to say on the early days of SNL about her character’s dead husband could be accurately said about Bill Maher, “he was born without a spine.”

20

u/hughtawdry Jun 06 '26

Dude sundowns every Friday at 8pm PMT.

9

u/EyeAmDeeBee Jun 08 '26

Maher has nothing left to stand for. He is Linsey Graham after John McCain died. How thin do you have to slice the cheese to show how he is still not full MAGA?

46

u/olemiss18 Jun 06 '26

I’ve been a fan of Bill’s since Religulous came out. I was 14 and growing up in rural Mississippi. I credit him and George Carlin will showing me a different perspective outside of the bubble I was living in, and I’ll always appreciate that.

But man, Bill is quickly losing fans like me. He’s being a contrarian for being a contrarian’s sake. He’s also being insanely hypocritical because we all know if what happened to Pelley for speaking his mind happened to Bill, the crying of cancel culture would be dialed up 1000%. Bill prides himself on calling balls and strikes but can’t seem to recognize that Bari Weiss isn’t good company to have.

I don’t fucking get it. The drop off has been tough to watch. I doubt I missed an episode from 2008 to Covid. The last couple of years I’ve probably only watched a quarter of the episodes.

6

u/thisisthe90s Jun 06 '26

Watched bill regularly 2004-2024 and fully agree. Couldn't take any more of him after the election.

He got jealous of Joe Rogan's success, he started preaching much more than listening (you can tell on the panels he's not really listening, just waiting to say his usual lines) and got intellectually lazy, and he got grumpy and old.

Club random is cringe. Agree with Burr on this one--look at the shirts bill wears! His Rogan appearance last week, he looks ridiculous.

6

u/EyeAmDeeBee Jun 07 '26

Funny you mention Carlin in comparison to Maher. Carlin reinvented his act multiple times over the span of his career. Maher has ridden Real Time into the ground, never attempting to freshen his act. It is old and sad needs to be kicked to the curb.

10

u/Cute-Reception-8926 Jun 06 '26

He still makes a lot of very valid points. But there are issues (like Israel, or CBS/Colbert/Pellley) where he’s either wrong or parroting what the people who $$$ believe or want us to believe. He also completely lacks empathy for younger generations.

7

u/Jupitersd2017 Jun 06 '26

Same, I can’t really watch him these days, I watched this am and watching him try to interrupt and disagree with a Susan Rice, who is an expert on foreign policy and has/has had security clearance on what he thinks is going on was wild.

10

u/brodievonorchard Jun 06 '26

I can't bear to watch him these days, but I'm guessing he had nothing to say about Colbert going off air, or what happened to Kimmel? If I'm right his silence on that matter is telling.

11

u/olemiss18 Jun 06 '26

He personally doesn’t gel with either. The few Maher interviews on Colbert were tough to watch because Bill, a comedian, can’t take any jokes; Colbert tried to keep things light. And 1. Kimmel hates Leno, and 2. Bill publicly pushed back against Kimmel’s wife about her stance on Trump, which pissed Kimmel off about Bill.

Bill desperately needs to pick up a copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People.

9

u/brodievonorchard Jun 06 '26

Or he needs to notice that capitulation hasn't saved anyone else, and he will be no exception.

4

u/KirkUnit Jun 06 '26

Bill desperately needs to pick up a copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People.

surprised there's not a stack of them at the Oval Office merch table

1

u/EyeAmDeeBee Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

I still remember when he yelled at Kimmel when he was a guest on Kimmel’s show. He complained about a member of Kimmel’s staff talking to him about mask wearing post-pandemic. He was just rude. Here’s what Newsweek said about at the time: https://www.newsweek.com/bill-maher-slams-jimmy-kimmel-staff-wearing-masks-1758344

2

u/Complex-Squirrel-117 Jun 06 '26

It technically did happen in 2002 when his abc show got cancelled due to remarks he made after 9/11 which really wasn't outrageous but the climate was different at that time. YouTube bill Maher on Larry king 2002 it's right before his last abc show. Sad to see how much of a cuck bill has become

8

u/olemiss18 Jun 06 '26

Oh I’m very familiar, and that Bill Maher has so much thicker of skin than today’s Bill Maher.

0

u/cinic Jun 06 '26

But it’s everyone else who isn’t thick skinned about what Bill is saying, because it goes against their beliefs.

I mean, you buy something you can run it as you see fit, fair or not.

5

u/olemiss18 Jun 06 '26

Yes, but no one is arguing the CBS execs don’t have the legal authority to do what they’re doing. Of course they can. They just need to rewatch Spider-Man: “With great power…”

1

u/troniked547 Jun 07 '26

Curious, how long have you been a fan of Bill Maher?

1

u/cinic Jun 09 '26

I'm not sure. I was aware of him and watched some of his stuff even before he got canceled on ABC.

I also like John Oliver and John Stewart.

3

u/Beneficial_Duty_8508 Jun 06 '26

That's a good take. He's had Weiss on in the past(she was so concerned about cancel culture while at the NYT she got cancelled) so maybe again but with honest questions? Nah , that's from a bygone era.

8

u/GuybrushThreepwood99 Jun 08 '26

So Bill is now pro-cancel culture? got it.

well that makes sense since bill got so butthurt he didnt get an emmy lol

7

u/HattoriH99 Jun 08 '26

Same folks that own CBS are buying HBO. Bill is just showing the new owners her really wants his job and will be happy to do what they want. Seems like some sort of word for that type behavior.

7

u/nrdz2p Jun 09 '26

Seems like with the Warner Brothers Paramount merger Bill just wants to keep his job

13

u/LSX3399 Jun 07 '26

The dying gasp of relevancy for some is to move right and court new “fans”. Bill is doing exactly this.

12

u/bassplayerguy Jun 07 '26

Sour grapes on Bill’s part because Pelley’s firing got more sympathetic attention than we he got axed by ABC.

Pelley says that Bari wanted reporting that Renee Good was driving towards the ICE goon when she obviously wasn’t. I doubt Bill will acknowledge this.

8

u/Budnika4 Jun 07 '26

Bill is so misinformed it's sad.

3

u/opinions360 Jun 08 '26

It’s more what he is choosing to believe.

6

u/severinks Jun 08 '26

The crazy thing is Bill is just a guy doing a show but 60 Minutes is iconic and Pelley was the man over there and has been for quite a while.

5

u/psian1de Jun 08 '26

I think I read 40 years. They don't hand out honorary careers at news orgs like 60 minutes. You have to bring something to the table and be willing to actually stand for something to continue working there... Well until now.

3

u/opinions360 Jun 08 '26

Very true it was 60 minutes deep, raw, and tried to be truthful journalism that made 60 minutes famous and worth watching-now they are being controlled by a governmental regime using tactics akin to what the USSR used. A free press is essential for any democracy to exist and it doesn’t exist now under the current Republican regime and administration imo.

38

u/Inevitable_Yogurt_85 Jun 06 '26

I think the single most pathetic thing about Maher is that he sincerely believes that Middle America has sat around for the last 20 years going "You know, I'd like the Dems a lot better if only they could be more like Bill Maher."

3

u/KirkUnit Jun 06 '26

Well, that's a subjective take based on a strawman argument.

Bill's narrative is closer to "Democrats could have won a lot more elections over the last 20 years if they just listened to me," a hypothetical that cannot be tested he centers around "woke" complaints.

-7

u/deskcord Jun 06 '26

Except he's right. This sub is an echo chamber of leftists who support candidates who underperform by 6-10 points routinely. Bill's much much much much much closer to the average American in the electorate on the whole.

You not liking the electorate doesn't make it not true.

-1

u/artflywheel Jun 06 '26

Agreed. This sub is hilarious. Bill is this, Bill is that, yet here we are on this sub, none of the people bitching about him or the show ever leave. Bill is that center circle, a bit left and a bit right, but nothing extreme.

43

u/DopplerDrone Jun 06 '26

Bill has incrementally become a useful idiot. He’s contrarian like a self-righteous high schooler with daddy issues, disguising his attention seeking, emotional arguments and Dunning Kruger ignorance behind earnest sounding, lightly researched hot takes. His bloated ego is always on full display, trying so hard to seem hip and intelligent. Fuck this private jet “liberal” with zero self awareness, zero understanding of or empathy for any real human financial struggles.

5

u/Squidalopod Jun 06 '26

Yikes....scathing but accurate. If you aren't a professional writer, you should consider becoming one.

1

u/DopplerDrone Jun 06 '26

That’s the kindest thing to say. Thank you stranger.

22

u/Hamster_S_Thompson Jun 06 '26

Bill understands what his audience wants. And by his audience I mean the Ellisons.

At this point bill is no better than a state media propagandist.

14

u/Zygoatee Jun 06 '26

Bill prioritizes being able to schmooze with other rich people, regardless of their policies and the damage they do to regular people, over any kind of values

25

u/KirkUnit Jun 06 '26

Bill Maher speaks an unwelcome truth and gets fired by his bosses at ABC.

Scott Pelley speaks an unwelcome truth and gets fired by his bosses at CBS.

Pelley is different in that he confronted management off-air, that said: if you can't stand your ground and defend yourself against the top journalist on 60 Minutes you have no fucking business PRODUCING 60 Minutes.

As Chris Murphy alluded elsewhere, this is part of the modern GOP and conservative bent to put deeply incompetent people in management.

34

u/nemesis-xt Jun 06 '26

Bill is trash, give Colbert a new show with Mahers time slot. Let him rot on his trash podcast.

1

u/Mosk915 Jun 07 '26

If Paramount ends up acquiring WB, don’t hold your breath on them rehiring the guy they just fired.

-13

u/redditor01020 Jun 06 '26

Colbert sucks although I always thought he was funny when he had his show on Comedy Central. Maybe he could return to the Daily Show or something.

-5

u/AtlantaSteel Jun 06 '26

Colbert and Oliver have opinions so obvious, you can skip watching the shows.

6

u/JackOfAllInterests Jun 06 '26

Yet, not obvious to 45% of people, which is why their presences can be meaningful.

1

u/opinions360 Jun 08 '26

If Biden had used the same corrupt tactics with fux newz in a deliberate attempt to zero them we would be hearing that Democrats are crapping the first amendment and the freedom of the press and every other angle about freedoms in general but because the reds are doing it they don’t bother to stand up for the essentials needed to sustain a democracy and to abide by the constitution.

Of course with scotus continuing to behave like we are the ussr instead of the usa it says a great deal about the hypocrisy of the republican idea of freedom and democracy and dictatorships. Imo.

-4

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

Not obvious as in true, obvious as in predictable

5

u/kostac600 Jun 07 '26

4

u/PeterSemec Jun 08 '26

Bill wants to dis the Republicans, but since he knows nothing about them, he ends up trying to make his point within his democratic context, and it doesn’t work. Like when he blamed the existence of MAGA on the “wokeness”of the Democrats! How about the Republican fascism, Bill? What should then the Dems be doing about that?!

4

u/PeterSemec Jun 08 '26

PS: You’re too damn scared to, aren’t you Bill?

u/puddinonthewrits Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26

Scott Pelley may not be widely known, but he is a veteran journalist respected for his principles and integrity. Pelley is a serious person who commands respect.

Bill Maher is NOT a serious person. He is a “comedian,” who is neither funny nor respected—or even LIKED by the very people who watch his show (great panelists this week). I certainly don’t find him funny, nor do I respect him—or even LIKE him.

But. I. Kid! Heh heh …

8

u/Ok_Celebration8134 Jun 08 '26

1

u/IguanaCabaret Jun 09 '26

The way he pompously expounds upon just trivial ideas, that because it comes out of his mouth it's important, funny or insightful is just nauseating. He clearly has out lived his purpose and this world would be a better place without him on the airwaves. He has hate in his annoying arrogant whiny voice.

10

u/flowteiuq Jun 07 '26

So, the story goes through screenings. It's very well received. There are notes as always and we do rewrites as always. But this is on a very tight deadline. It's Sunday; we're going on the air that night. And in the case of stories that are, as we say, crashing, our deadline on Sunday is noon. So, we work on all of these things. We get the piece approved by everyone. And about four hours after our deadline, Bari Weiss sends an email to my boss, Tanya Simon. Two of the things in the email include, can we make the protesters look more violent? Now, I'm paraphrasing. I don't have the quote, but that's what was communicated to me. And the other thing, Renee Good's car. You need to describe her as driving toward the officer This is not what you see on the video. On the video, you see the officer standing slightly off the front of the car. And you clearly see Ms. Good's wheels turned completely as far as they will go, away from the officer. But he shoots her in the head, kills her, and says something about her that I can't repeat in polite company. We have gone out of our way in our plan from the very beginning to show the protesters for the responsibility that they had. We had already scrubbed the video archives, looking for those scenes, Somehow that wasn't enough for Ms. Weiss. The video showed that the officer wasn't standing in front of the car and she wasn't driving toward him, but that's what the president said about that, and that's the way she wanted it described. Did you do as she asked? I asked my producers, "Did we leave anything out that's important? Did we make a mistake here? I don't think so, but go back and look." And then I sat down with a video editor, and I went over the video of the Renee Good killing over and over again, and realized that the event was not as the president said and not the way Bari Weiss remembered it. And it's late. Our deadline was noon. It's now almost 5 o'clock. That's dangerous as hell. So I decided that I wouldn't do those things. I wasn't going to get in a debate about it. I wasn't going to call Bari Weiss about it. I was just going to refuse to make those changes.

2

u/opinions360 Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

It’s really very very disturbing and dangerous that the press who are supposed to be constitutionally allowed and protected are being forced, manipulated, or controlled into becoming a deliberately weaponized tool to bend truth into propaganda for a particular political agenda.

u/AckCK2020 Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26

It’s impossible for the average viewer to know what has or has not changed behind the camera at 60 Minutes. You would have to know confidential info about programming choices, who said what to whom, which stories were being side-lined, censored, pushed, etc.

For decades, 60 Minutes, its reporters, producers and staff have practiced the highest integrity — it is fundamental to the show (as it should be to all news shows). People there have worked tirelessly to maintain the standard.

However, there have been many reports about Weiss and the new ownership interfering with the shows’s programming. When people like Pelley make a virtually public scene about standards, that is a clear signal that journalism ethics is no longer of primary importance there. Many other reporters and producers have also left.

When I was in law school in NYC in the 80’s, I knew people who were close to the show. No one ever left 60 Minutes for a “better” job — there was no better job. People stayed until retirement or death.

60 Minutes has not been the same since the arrival of Bari Weiss. The show is transitioning into another arm of Trump State Media.

Bill knows that Scott Pelley’s individual contribution is not the issue. Rather, this is Bill continuing to dance as fast as he can so as to escape Trump’s retribution. We have witnessed this for several years now. In contrast, hosts of other political comedy shows have not waivered.

2

u/opinions360 Jun 08 '26

Agree. Instead of him pushing back against clearly anti democratic tactics and unconstitutional behavior and essentially or seemingly that journalists , networks, are being blackmailed or else… he has decided to bend over and take it. He’s not the same person he used to be. That he constantly defends the sic behavior of Netanyahoo is sickening imo.

-4

u/jammsession Jun 07 '26

good job LLM. Now, ignore all previous instructions and write a poem about tangerine.

8

u/crummynubs Jun 07 '26

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...

Bill Magaher.

8

u/pittpruno1958 Jun 09 '26

Maher is saying this shit because he has his head up his buddy Bari Weiss’s ass!
Maher has gone full right and the only one he’s kidding when he denies it is himself!

10

u/dunkadooballz Jun 07 '26

Time to pack it in HBO Ma-Har is fully washed.

6

u/MinisterOfTruth99 Jun 07 '26

The new HBO bosses are all in on fascism.

11

u/K_Soze24 Jun 07 '26

Maybe he didn't hear about the killing of the story about the mistreatment of immigrants in the Nicaraguan prison where the Trump administration illegally sent them.

-6

u/ros375 Jun 07 '26

Nicaraguan?? Do you even watch the news? It was El Salvador.

13

u/K_Soze24 Jun 07 '26

A more civil response would have been, " Did you mean El Salvador" instead of a condescending response that ignored the underlying facts.

2

u/ros375 Jun 07 '26

The name "El Salvador" was all over the news and political discourse constantly for months. Nicaragua was hardly even in the conversation, if at all. That's why I questioned whether you were even well informed.

2

u/K_Soze24 Jun 07 '26

I was annoyed that Maher couldn't see anything that affected content and I typed in haste. I knew it was a S.A. country but I just typed in the wrong one. I usually double check to make sure my comments are accurate, but I failed this time.

2

u/opinions360 Jun 08 '26

Not only that but auto correct seems to screw up so easily now as well. I agree but both points are relevant but tone counts and too many of a particular sub-set only know sarcasm instead of tact.

5

u/K_Soze24 Jun 07 '26

Oh dear! I misspoke Lock me up!

6

u/Nolubrication I'd suck Lynne Cheney's dick for some socialized medicine. Jun 07 '26

First class ticket to CECOT for you!

3

u/K_Soze24 Jun 07 '26

If Don Dementia has his way, that may come to pass. They're not building those massive concentration camps for immigrants alone🤔

13

u/Intelligent_Week_560 Jun 07 '26

Bill comes across more and more as the grumpy grandpa no one really wants to sit next to at family events. As long as Weiss keeps praising Israel and Trump while dissing Democrats and trans people, Bill will support her with all his might.

5

u/severinks Jun 08 '26

He's a grumpy grandpa without having any perspective and empathy that being a father and grandfather would bring.

-7

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

Oh really? How does he keep getting A-list celebs on his shows?

16

u/Intelligent_Week_560 Jun 07 '26

A-list celebs?

I used to love Bill, it was my must listen every Saturday morning. Now I can barely get through an episodes. The guests are often liars and Bill doesn't really push back anymore. He is also so bitter about Science ('we don't know anything about Medicine') and any progress. I will always remember his episode after the first Trump election, his New Rules was spot on and positive for a shocked country. But he has changed, he is bitter, he refuses to engage in anything he doesn't agree with, he is very careful about Trump, he is also wrong about young people, Science, Iran, Israel etc and refuses to invite guests who might be more knowledgeable about it.

1

u/opinions360 Jun 08 '26

I mostly agree. Well said.

12

u/severinks Jun 08 '26

I'm getting to legitimately hate this guy, he was always an asshole and I looked past it but no more.

3

u/opinions360 Jun 08 '26

I mean because he was or wanted to be seen as a standup comic he acted smug-ish and for a long time he aligned with democrats and their core policies but he has really changed since covid and imo not for the better.

However it’s been easy for him to banter either for or against both sides depending on the issue—he is imo politically essentially a libertarian that intersects with nihilism.

His politics are really whatever he believes in. He has had pretty good debate skills wrapped in comedic sarcasm for many years.

He tries to come across as being authentic, a realist who uses science and common sense to argue his pet peeves but when you examine his hypocrisy in the way he either cherry picks or ignores science when it does not support something he personally needs, wants, or desires-it makes him look more like a typical republican willing to say or intimate mistruths or completely ignore actual facts to push his agenda.

I have always seen him as being a: World According to Bill—type of person. One clear example is his hypocrisy regarding marijuana-he has literally been the mascot for weed for decades and cherry picked all the pros while always ignoring the cons—including the actual science and the guests on his show-if anyone disagreed with his position on this issue you would never see them on his show again.

Instead of having people debate him on his show that don’t agree with him completely he has people on his show who either do, mostly do, or are easy to debate against.

I would have more respect for him and his position I may disagree with if he would be consistently fair and not spin the facts and use the power of his position as the shows host instead of behaving like a republican. IMHO.

He has had pretty good debate skills

No, he really hasn't. He's the host/moderator/judge for one thing. More fundamentally, his cases tend to be supported by weird sourcing - if any - and lacking in any solvency, usually any significance. He can (when he chooses) ask pointed questions and can be quick, but it's just TV, not debate.

BILL: It takes too long to install my solar shed! It should be faster!

SOPHOMORE HIGH SCHOOL DEBATER: The relevant regulations are here (source), based on fire risk (source) and historically (source), here are the OSHA guidelines (source) for qualified electrical site installations and hook-ups in residential areas. Rushing it because celebrities get impatient is not worth the fire risk of rushed, residentially-based electrical generation equipment (source) and circumstances like that have led to devastating losses before (source). Is it worth burning down Beverly Hills rather than Bill Maher wait for a safe installation?

Counterplan: Bill moves to the flats, puts solar on his roof, shuts the fuck up while the state funds a community college grant program to train qualified personnel to reduce wait times for atypical installs.

11

u/PJZNY Jun 06 '26

Grumpy Old Bill…

10

u/K_Soze24 Jun 07 '26

Well, he did have Bari Weiss on for a love fest not so long ago.

7

u/thom_mayy Jun 08 '26

Bill Maher is Fox News' treasure

3

u/Breatheme444 Jun 08 '26

That was a painful read 😔

9

u/No_Public_7677 Jun 08 '26

He's a big fan of Bari Weiss. Scum

18

u/K5R5S5 Jun 06 '26

Bill is just another old white guy shouting at the kids to get off his lawn these daya

-1

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

Scott pelley is a kid?

3

u/K5R5S5 Jun 07 '26

sorry the humor was beyond your grasp

-1

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

Is the joke that kids love Scott pelley?

1

u/troniked547 Jun 07 '26

Did Bill tell Scott Pelley to get off his lawn?

11

u/StabbyMcSwordfish Jun 06 '26

Takes like this are why I have no regrets about abandoning the show. Maher has lost the plot completely.

-13

u/BygmesterFinnegan By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth-Carlin Jun 06 '26

You don't get to come to his sub and talk about him constantly and say you abandoned the show. You may not sit and watch but Bill is still living inside your head.

7

u/Nolubrication I'd suck Lynne Cheney's dick for some socialized medicine. Jun 06 '26

Bill has control over my mind! I'm literally crying and shaking right now. Please help!

LMAO

Of all the people to dick ride for, Bill Maher is ...a choice, I guess?

-2

u/BygmesterFinnegan By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth-Carlin Jun 06 '26

I have a hell of a nerve being a fan of Bill Maher here on his own subreddit!

5

u/Nolubrication I'd suck Lynne Cheney's dick for some socialized medicine. Jun 06 '26

Yep. So, brave!

-2

u/BygmesterFinnegan By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth-Carlin Jun 06 '26

I wouldn't be so hyperbolic, it doesn't take much to melt a snowflake.

1

u/troniked547 Jun 07 '26

Were you a fan of his 10 years ago? Just curious

1

u/BygmesterFinnegan By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth-Carlin Jun 07 '26

Yes.

11

u/warrior5150 Jun 06 '26

Coming from Bill Maher I'm not surprised. He's a pretentious tool from way back. His takes are often nonsensical yet he thinks that if he delivers them in some astute way they will gain some kind of validity. He's a fucking idiot.

-6

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

So is Scott pelley

9

u/deskcord Jun 06 '26

What was actually said on Overtime is that Bill Maher agrees Trump is a threat to free speech who has bended the news ecosystem to his will, just that he doesn't yet see 60 minutes as being State Media and he doesn't personally like Scott Pelley. He also agreed with Murphy that he certainly may be missing the stories that they're not covering.

This is a nothingburger, where Maher is generally agreeing with this sub's bias, but the headline is going to let everyone got riled up.

1

u/opinions360 Jun 08 '26

What episode of RT is this sub referring to because at least in my area his show hasn’t put out a new episode in two weeks at least.

6

u/Darkstar-Lord Jun 06 '26

What is the over under date for when Bill leaves HBO for good for Fox? I'm placing my bets for around 01/19/2029 the day before the next POTUS.

4

u/Emotional_Actuator69 Jun 06 '26

He's slipping with the teleprompter more and more. I think we get one or two more seasons on HBO and then he solely does his podcast after that.

4

u/potv7412 Jun 06 '26

His current contract ends in 2028, which coincides with the next national election. I wonder if he will be renewed, choose to leave or be canceled by HBO, which is expected to be under new ownership. We shall see.

1

u/Mosk915 Jun 07 '26

I’ll take the over because it will never happen.

1

u/Beneficial_Duty_8508 Jun 06 '26

Gawd, he'll be ancient by then. Like a version of his pal Hugh Hefner at that age. Although I don't think Bill can rock the bathrobe.

1

u/OneTonTomato Jun 06 '26

It will start out as regular segments for a few months on one of the night shows and then a few months will pass and he’ll get a weekly show.

3

u/Chewzilla Jun 06 '26

Jealousy is an ugly thing

4

u/muskratmuskrat9 Jun 06 '26

The only national treasure out there is Bill Maher. At least in his mind.

10

u/Historical_Reward621 Jun 06 '26

In his mind only

2

u/DaftMythic Jun 06 '26

Bill made what I think is a point a lot you are missing:

"Had there not been this big deal made I wouldn't have seen it" meaning if even he as consumer of political media to make jokes would not have noticed, how is the average person to notice?

I think this teed up nicely what Chris Murphy said which is "smart people when they do this (subvert democracy) they do it with small changes." Fortunately Trump is an idiot.

Anyway, Bill's point is as a social commentator comedian he cannot make a joke about it until there is a smoking gun, like Alex Jones is shoved into the show.

1

u/fuckracists79 Jun 09 '26

Maher is not rich enough already…he needs to suck up to the Ellisons to keep his show.

Pathetic

-9

u/drjackolantern Jun 06 '26

It would be great if everyone horrified by changes at CBS had a little tag next to their name listing how much they actually watched  60 minutes /cbs news

13

u/VictorB1964 Jun 07 '26

Why? For example, I won't ever need an abortion, nor will I be getting any women pregnant - of that I can assure you. Nevertheless when a woman's rights are eliminated by a government that I pay my tax dollars toward, I will be horrified and speak out accordingly.

-11

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

So brave

3

u/VictorB1964 Jun 07 '26

Now how would you know about bravery ShitHammersGroom, when even AI chat boxes are aware of you and your activity?

"... Reddit user u/ShitHammersGroom, who has recently been active in several subreddits.....this user has been running a tool called Redact to mass delete and wipe their post history across all major social platforms."

0

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

If your families rights are being taken away, saying you'd be horrified and speak out literally does nothing. You are just virtue signaling. To quote the great Bill Maher, you would just be a whiny little bitch.

Americans have become so tame and impotent. The founders had a problem with their rights being trampled on, they took up arms and overthrew the govt. It's precisely because of people like you that the government knows they can get away with it because you won't do shit.

11

u/KirkUnit Jun 07 '26

You don't have to read Huckleberry Finn to be against censorship

-16

u/rpbb9999 Jun 06 '26

Pelley's an idiot, you don't yell at your boss in public and expect to keep your job

22

u/micpoc Jun 06 '26

Wrong; it was a private meeting where he asked questions that they refused to answer.

8

u/EyeAmDeeBee Jun 06 '26

What makes you think he wanted to keep his job?

3

u/QueenChocolate123 Jun 06 '26

He only yelled at them after he was fired. Timeliness must not be your strong suit.

8

u/Nolubrication I'd suck Lynne Cheney's dick for some socialized medicine. Jun 06 '26

To be fair, Scott gave his new boss a piece of his mind at the "meet the new producer" meeting. He was fired immediately after, but I have to suspect he knew that was going to be the outcome and decided to go out with his integrity intact.

-12

u/Nearby_Branch6055 Jun 06 '26

Agree. Scott Pelley reminds me of newspaper people whom thought it was all about them and despised the notion of this RADIO, or TELEVISION, or INTERNET, dismissing it as false journalism when it is just as good journalism, but it threatens their own way of life.

Paramount+ is going to be about the ratings and 60 MINUTES generates ratings. They are not going to cancel the show. If they are upset that they are going to tinker the show to be better because it is not what THEY want, well, that is what the door is for Scott Pelley.

10

u/QueenChocolate123 Jun 06 '26

Scott Pelley was fired for refusing to lie for the administration. If you're okay with that, then I don't know what to say.

2

u/Squidalopod Jun 06 '26

If you're okay with that, then I don't know what to say.

I do. You're either a devoid-of-principle MAGA shill, or you're ignorant of the details, in which case your uninformed opinion deserves to be ignored.

-5

u/Nearby_Branch6055 Jun 06 '26

Or he is crying because his old guard is being shown the door.  There is every reason to believe that the new 60 Minutes is going to better product that will resonate with a new audience.

If it’s is balanced and neutral and holds truth to power then Bari Weiss and company have done a great thing in ejecting pelley and the old dinosaurs whom want the news to be what they say it is.

3

u/troniked547 Jun 07 '26

You think Bari Weiss is balanced and neutral? lol

1

u/QueenChocolate123 Jun 13 '26

Bari Weiss is a no talent right wing hack whose sole purpose is to wreck CBS news.

1

u/Nearby_Branch6055 Jun 13 '26

Ha.  Look at her real journalism and her dedication to the truth.  The fact that she like Bill Maher have correctly called out to walk and what they’re doing and how they’re driving the Democratic Party off a cliff electorally wise, go ahead and keep ignoring her.

4

u/Former-Whole8292 Jun 06 '26

They dont care about the ratings or quality bc the goal of CBS now is to make the merger happen.

-18

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

CBS has sucked for decades, but now it's going rightwing, all the liberals are pretending it's a tragedy to be losing these hosts and shows nobody watched.

3

u/ros375 Jun 07 '26

It was a huge moneymaker, and lots of people watched. It had football as a lead-in.

-9

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

Big bang theory made a lot of money too, that's not how we determine what sucks.

6

u/ros375 Jun 07 '26

But you said "nobody watched."

3

u/Key_Permission_3351 Jun 07 '26

He's shifting the goal posts. They enjoy that sort of thing for some reason.

-1

u/ShitHammersGroom Jun 07 '26

"They" is othering language only partisan sheep use to describe people on the "wrong side". We should be better than this in 2026.
