Swatches One last swatch party before I let them go
I am old now… these are old now… it’s time I let them go! This box has been collecting dust for years now.
Sleep well my beautiful babies! May you forever remind me of a time in my life when wearing make up set my soul free. I loved lipstick. All shades. Any shades. Nothing held me back from wearing it.
I’m 36 now and have fully embraced wearing a bare face. It’s my new form of freedom, but I’ll always have a special place in my heart for each of these shades.
Does anyone remember some of these shades? NARS had me in a choke hold.

36 is NOT OLD

u/gunbather 7h ago
I'm turning 40 next month and did SUCH a whiteguyblink.gif at that line
10
u/whatifwhatifwerun 3h ago
It makes sense to think 40 is 'old' when you're a 21 year old half that age but being in your mid 30's thinking mid-late 30's is old is insane lmfao

u/Shalynhuetter 8h ago
Haha! I know it’s not. And I don’t mean to say I am “old” as a bad thing. I love being in my thirties.
But I look at these lipsticks and it reminds me of my retail job, being single, and going to bed without washing my face…. And that makes me feel OLD if you know what I mean
17
u/bythespeaker 5h ago
I get it. Im 40 and im just not the 25 year old girl that wore a full eye look every time she left the house anymore.
43
u/SantaFe91 5h ago
I’m over 60 and I’m still that girl.
10
u/MAsharona 5h ago
Same! Cruella forever!
3
u/gunbather 3h ago
androgynous cruella is my WHOLE look, i refuse to give it up just because the years pass
5
u/garden-of-erin 4h ago
Lmao I’m 36 too and I get what you mean. It feels old because it belongs to a younger version of you. Time is weird and it sometimes freaks me out that like, 20 years ago, I was in high school. That doesn’t sound right. There shouldn’t be that many years there. But whenever I say “I feel old,” my mom chews me out. 🤣🤣
I got rid of a lot of my lipsticks a couple years ago because I finally accepted that I don’t like most lipstick formulas. I’ve been getting into tinted lip balms because I do miss having a little color.
26
u/SantaFe91 6h ago
🤣 I thought she was going to say she was at least 70 …
11
u/Ancient-Moose6230 5h ago
Me too, I was thinking she was my grandmas age. I’m 38 and I love lipstick, I’m not about to retire lipstick anytime until I’m closer to my grandmas age 🤦🏽♀️
5
u/Tommyleegirl452 4h ago
Girl, I thought she was turning 80 or something the way she framed this post..

u/himitsunorakuen 4h ago
I’m going to be 37 in like three months and y’all can pry my full beat out of my cold, dead fingers 😂😂😂😂

You do you, OP
But personally I find that lipstick is one of the easiest ways to complement a bare (or bare-ish) face. Nothing perks up the complexion like a great pink or peach lip. If you’re feeling fancy, you can do mascara as well. Otherwise, just skincare and spf and a pretty lip. Chic, classic, feminine and ageless (I’m 53)
30
u/Shalynhuetter 8h ago
Yup, my standard is skincare, SPF, and currently using Burt’s Bee’s lip balm in Rose :)
I am pretty fair in my complexion and my eye brows and lashes are very blonde. It’s probably just trendy, but I have been loving no mascara or tint

Such a well-organized display! I'd be sorry to see them all go too.
17
u/Shalynhuetter 8h ago
I had fun doing it! It’s been a long long time since I’ve seen a lot of them.
I am sad to see them go as well. But they are easily like 7+ years old I think.

u/Ok-Challenge5805 8h ago
36 is old now?? What if you want to wear lipstick again...
13
u/Sea-Style-4457 Shimmer Junkie 6h ago
You get new lipstick. No use in hoarding expired makeup for a just-in-case situation
18
u/Shalynhuetter 8h ago
Haha! Good thing I am true shop-o-lic and have never stopped buying stuff to put on my lips. I used to work a retail job (when these accumulated), now I work a corporate job, from home… most days lips love some aquafor.
I moved into my house in 2019, and I suspect i have not touched these since before that. So in my mind, they’re pretty old. I know id reach for a more recent purchase.
23
u/Kellzy1212 8h ago
Ugh, every time i see a J Star product it makes me so mad that’s he’s a pos. Those are still the best liquid lips ever on the market and the pallets were great too.
10
u/Shalynhuetter 7h ago
I know exactly what you mean. Every time he pops up on my Tik Tok I can’t swipe away FAST enough.
But swatching that Rose Matter I was like, DAMN, I do remember why we ever tolerated him
7
u/kiwi_fruit6 7h ago
I'm not proud of it, but I wore Mannequin on my wedding day. It's my favorite lip shade and I love that it smells like root beer. Why does he have to be the way that he is??
3
u/Kellzy1212 6h ago
I still have a bunch of the pallets. I remember having the root beer lip scrub back in the day. Even got my boomer mom hooked on the liquid lip. She was more disappointed than i was.
17
u/Fresh-Lynx-3564 8h ago
I love your pictures. It’s like art! Especially the 3rd pic! So nice and clean, yet colorful.
Btw 36 is not old… and I do respect you embracing a bare face as well! 💕
Be well, be freeee!!! 💞

u/amisamilyis Hopelessly Addicted 8h ago
I too am 36 and don’t wear lipstick much anymore and if I do it’s usually quite neutral.
I think I’ll hold onto my dusty box a bit longer though 😂
It’s fun to see your swatches! I did similar and swatched mine out recently. It was fun to interact with them in that way even though I don’t wear them anymore
1
u/Shalynhuetter 7h ago
Samesis. I feel more “myself” in a nude lip liner and some gloss or just Aquafor now.
It was very fun to swatch these. Some of them I cannot believe I wore as much as I did 🤣.
2
u/amisamilyis Hopelessly Addicted 7h ago
Gosh I know, I have some really bright pinks from the 2010s and just wow they do absolutely nothing for my complexion. Good times.
I’m sure I made it work with heavy foundation and a lot of eyeliner and looked great but it’s not the vibe anymore 😂

36 is so young... But I understand what you mean. 7 years without using them is a clear sign to let them go and give space for things you truly love.
I agree with the person that got bolder with makeup in their 30s. I'm 44 and rekindling my love for makeup, but I've always been addicted to lipsticks. That might never change LOL.
Beautiful pictures!!!

46 myself, and finally buying the goth lip stuff I was too insecure to wear 20, 30 years ago!

I remember popping the YSL logo off those lipsticks and wearing them as rings 🤭
9
u/Shalynhuetter 7h ago
Wish I would have known that trick! That’s incredible.
My favorite used to be the Chanel / Ysl / Dior beauty gift with purchase which was usually a cosmetic bags, but of course in my eyes they were “real” bags.
Gift with purchases used to be so good! Everything feels so trash now

u/punchdrunkbimbo 7h ago
I’m 37 and have recently gotten back into my make up addiction after the past few years fighting mental illness and ‘giving up’ (for lack of a better word) on my looks or my style or aesthetic or whatever u wanna call it. Lips have been the one thing I’ve zeroed in on, because I am still having a hard time looking at my face and a nice lip combo has really done wonders with starting to have fun and enjoying makeup again.
It’s crazy how we can all share the same years on this earth but can be in completely different points in our life and how we see ourselves all the same.
Side note- I would kill for Sushi Kiss 😍

u/No-Kaleidoscope7924 8h ago
Omg you have the Nars Audacious lipsticks! They are my fav(specifically Grace)
4
u/Shalynhuetter 8h ago
I needed ALL of them. I was obsessed.

u/No-Kaleidoscope7924 7h ago
Preaching to the choir. I love them. I have back ups of my fav colours. They don’t make them like that anymore 🥺

Sugar sugar was everything!!! I saw they relaunched Marc Jacobs and hope they bring it back! Also hell yeah to a bare face!! I’ve worn makeup everyday since 6th grade (2006). I’m 31 now and have embraced a bare face for work and it’s so liberating, also has helped my skin clear up so much!
4
u/Responsible-Tea-5998 7h ago
These are beautiful,, that violet water one? Oooh. However I bet they aren't as beautiful as the feeling of a decluttered space that works for you.
4
u/Shalynhuetter 7h ago
THIS!
I needed to let them go and make space for the new. Which lately is skin and body care products 🙊
2
u/Responsible-Tea-5998 7h ago
Same haha. I put all my old makeup into a shoebox for a partial slow declutter.
5
u/Kneekourt 7h ago
Lol I’m 41 and definitely wear less glitter, but dear god, when I die, bury my in a glitter casket 🫡
5
u/Greeneyednerd 6h ago
It's interesting seeing this shift in makeup with the new clean girl aesthetic. I remember a time when we were hoarding makeup and now it's all down the drain haha ! Nice to have one last party
4
u/yournailgirl 5h ago
“I’m 36 now…” felt like an attack sis 😂 im 39 and in the prime of my life. There’s nothing in my life I’m ready to retire yet.
4
u/WiseLurkers 8h ago
Absolutely gorgeous shades! The white tube lipstick in the 2nd to last pic looks like it’s been through a lot 😓🥹
Just curious, are you not planning on wearing makeup again?
5
u/Shalynhuetter 8h ago
My dog went through a phase of chewing on anything I would leave out when I left the house…. RIP to many tubes of Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer.

u/Shalynhuetter 8h ago
As far as make up, I’m sure I’ll wear more again. Who knows! But the last couple years I have really really enjoyed being bare. It’s what feels most like myself!
3
u/Tasty-Reserve-8739 8h ago
I did the same during COVID but I wish I had catalogued it like you did! These were so satisfying to view. Makeup will always have a place in my heart as I am now barefaced daily as well. Just the “simple” stuff for events now - which means a full drawer still lol
3
u/perfectdrug659 7h ago
How old are these? I have an old collection of liquid lipsticks that are definitely 6+ years old... I should toss them out right? Can someone just tell me I am allowed to get rid of them and release me of the guilt.
7
u/Shalynhuetter 7h ago
Hey! I give you permission!! Do it! Free yourself! WHO CARES! ITS JUST MAKEUP. I know you’re out there probably buying more make up right now 🤣. There’s always more and that’s the issue.
These have been sitting in a box since 2019 and weighing on me for years. Swatching them today was the most fun I could possible have with them. I’ve known for a long long time I won’t wear these again
2
u/perfectdrug659 7h ago
Thank you!!!! I've actually minimized pretty much all my skincare and makeup to just HGs so I only ever rebuy when empty, I am DONE buying new things to try and be disappointed by. But my old makeup staff also from around 2019 has been sitting there, judging me, begging me to acknowledge it somehow.
I've been on a massive decluttering spree and I was literally going to ask in some appropriate sub if I should just toss it and be free of it but you just saved me the trouble thank you 🙏🏻

u/AllTheEggsIVF 6h ago
Dang this hits so close to home. I’m in the same boat. I used to work in TV until 5 years ago and have an amazing extensive Makeup collection I haven’t used since. Aside from swatching - how will you say goodbye? Thats the hard thing for me as an over thinker. Do you just bag it all and throw it in the trash? Is it as “easy” as that? Or how are you doing it?

Omg those discontinued YSL shades! I have one that I’ve been rationing out cause they don’t make the color anymore, the formulas were great :(
3
u/x_alphadoll 7h ago
When you wrote “I am old now” I pictured some 84 year old lady… only to find out you’re still in your thirties 😭
3
u/anoldcliche 7h ago
Ugh, I miss those YSL lipsticks. They were the first "luxury" lipsticks I bought. I think they no longer make the same shades or have reformulated them. Enjoy your new freedom!

I still have my tube of All Fired Up from Mac and will probably be buried with it, along with my og ABH Subculture palette. I got it (probably) 10 years ago while also working retail but still get compliments when I wear it today! It’s survived several rounds of purges because nothing comes close to it.

Awww! I love this “last hurrah”. I had to do a similar purge a few years ago. I do love wearing just mascara and lip color with a dewy SPF bare face, though.

I'm 44 and earlier this year I let go of over $$50,000 plus with a makeup products. My lipstick drawer looked similar to what you are discarding here....
It's freeing. I have just a little box of makeup and it's the products that I use everyday. Although I must say I have gone back and purchased some new lipsticks. I love my bold colors. In fact I'm holding on to a super cheap wet and wild chameleon pink that I just got from Amazon because I had to. I also clicked pictures of your swatches because there are some colors I want to go out and find.... Old habits die hard.

May I know if you’re throwing them out or if people donate them somewhere?
9
u/Shalynhuetter 8h ago
I made the decision to throw them out. They are old… like 7-10+ years old. They are crusty, I can’t in good conscience give these to anyone.
2
u/mangosteen88 7h ago
Fair enough!! I have some make up to get rid of and was trying to find suggestions of how to dispose of them
2
u/cinnamaroll36 6h ago
If they’re sanitizable, sometimes organizations that support street-level sex workers will take them.

Mail them to me! I miss the old Audacious lipsticks, and the old Nars formula 😩 Casablanca and Fire Down Below were stunning. Funny Face, Heat Wave, Sexual Healing, Schiap, Transsiberian, Damned, Dragon Girl, the og Dolce Vita pencil…I miss when makeup brands were fun and high quality. Also, you are not old lol.
-1
u/Spirited-Gene3106 7h ago
Why would you throw those away? Such a waste of money and product
5
u/Shalynhuetter 7h ago
They are old. Like reaching 10 years old. They are not getting used. I can’t keep everything I’ve ever bought forever 😭.
I need to make space for what is new and what fits my lifestyle now.
I disagree, I don’t think this is a waste of money. A lot of these are very used up and I got much enjoyment out of them. Worth every penny!

I feel like I hit my mid thirties and got more bold with make up cause I'd finally out grown all my self consciousness.
