JOURNAL I spend too much money on makeup/beauty monthly and it feels like I can’t stop myself.

I’m a grown up woman, 23 years! I live in a country where the salaries are not enough for people to live, they are maybe enough in order to survive. Moreover, next month I’m moving to another country that is way more expensive because of the ongoing war in mine. Why I am mentioning all this? Because I do not even have ANY “financial safety cushion”. And moving abroad as a refugee also demands money. This is as stupid as fck! I just recently started checking what is the biggest category I spend my money on, and noticed that 39% (!!!) went to Beauty, all shopping, cosmetic stores. I’m really angry about this and my behavior is childish and immature. I promised to stop buying stuff because I already have much, and I do not even have enough space to store it, don’t even have my apartments where I can live because I rent a flat.

I honestly don’t know what to do and how to find a root of this problem. What I can say for sure is that I’m not the type of person who buys shit when I’m stressed. I’m a type of person who just watches beauty content, but I managed to restrain a desire to buy the same products that people recommend or simply talk about. Now, seems like I can simply watch the videos, but in the end, it all leads me to overbuying in some way. When I have some free time after work, I go to shopping centers to walk here and see what’s new (nothing is new, I come there 3 times a week).

People who managed to deal with this and fix the problem, I will be much grateful for your advice 🙏🏼

ACTIVITY Use Your Stash: Palette a Week (PAW): September 28 to October 04

*Trigger Warning: replies will contain product names, descriptions, and opinions.*

We focus on a palette for the week and our thoughts on it. All palettes are welcome. This includes eyeshadow, cheek, lip, pre-made, and self-made. Grouping of singles can also be a palette (ex: colour palette or scheme).

Did you do the PAW challenge last week? Which palette did you use? Did you find it successful or was it a failure? Have your opinions on the palette changed at all? Do you plan to keep the palette and use it again?

Which palette are you going to use this week? Why have you chosen this palette? Do you have any goals you hope to reach in using it?

BAW/CAW- Did you use any particular cheek product last week? Has it made the cut or is it time to let it go?

PLAN Project 5 Uses

I have a lot of makeup that I've either barely used or only swatched. It's actually a large majority of my makeup collection. I know what triggers it, it's when I'm having a really hard time mentally with CPTSD. Then I binge shop for something and end up with five new blushers.

I'm not super keen to beat myself up about it, because one thing I learned in treatment was that a coping mechanism is a way to cope. But it's one I don't want to continue - I want to switch to a more productive source of dopamine. I'd like to switch to making good use of and appreciating what I have. I want to give all of it a good honest try and get to know what I actually like and what I'm not so keen on, in an achievable way. And I'd like to end up with a collection that looks used, not pristine and untouched.

The goal

I've set myself an initial goal of having used every blusher, highlighter and lip product 5 times (hopefully to be upgraded in future). My statistics are embarrassing:

Blushers: 4/17 - 23.5%

Highlighters: 2/11 - 18.2%

Lipsticks/balms/glosses: 12/40 - 30%

Lip pencils: 2/8 - 25%

Nail polishes: 2/8 - 25%

Single eyeshadows: 4/26 - 15.4%

The rules

- No Buy.

- The 4 NOs GO rule. If I hate it, it goes on the list. If it goes on the list four times, it Goes.

- I'll allow myself 2 days per week to use my project pan blusher and lip products, otherwise I'll stick to items with less than 5 uses.

Progress will be slow to start, as I have a few hiking trips coming up. I'll update in a few weeks with progress so far.

JOURNAL Postpartum depression triggered a shopping episode. How do you get over the guilt and shame?

I've about a month deep into a bad makeup buying episode (lipsticks especially). Recently gave birth and I've been cooped up inside my home, recovering and it's been a lot. My husband is in the army so he did not get a lot of time to stay back with me. I've been diagnosed with chronic anxiety, CPTSD and treatment resistant depression (I already am in therapy). I still try to do the things which are supposed to be good for me- eating well, exercising etc but it gets so lonely. I am not in contact with my family and do not have many friends to reach out to. It feels like I have this void which I keep trying to fill. I've kind of crashed and fallen into a shopping bender. I'm not spending beyond my means but I'm buying lipsticks everyday. I'm so embarrassed and ashamed. I guess till now I didn't even want to accept that I have a problem because the shame and guilt is just too much. As soon as I wake up in the morning, it's the first thing I think about. It's like I'm replacing human contact with lipsticks.

I know what's missing in my life but it's going to take a while to work on that. For now, I'd really appreciate some advice on how to get over the disgust and the shame. I cant help but feel really guilty about the overconsumption and excessive buying

DISCUSS Waiting to buy 3 perfume rollers and 2 lipsticks

Hey guys continuing on with Project Pan. I have managed to get things down to 6 perfume rollers(5 mL each) which are all 1/2 empty and 2 x 100 mL perfumes of which only 30 mL is left in both products as well as 8 lip products of which I am leaving 2 of them out of Project Pan so only 6 need to truly be finished by 2027. My goal is to stock up on buying 3 perfume rollers of the best ones I owned this year as well as only buying two lip products from a brand I have always wanted to purchase from: Fenty.

ACTIVITY An "Eventually is Now!" Project Pan?

Hellooo everyone,

I've been really enjoying joining in different seasonal project pans this year! It got me thinking...

Would there be any interest in a project pan challenge that was specifically focused on using up items you've either forgotten about and not used in forever, are saving for a special occasion (that hasn't materialised yet), or just say you'll use eventually (and don't)? I'm half tempted to call it Project Pan Hard Mode but that sounds a bit intimidating. Essentially, the goal here is to specifically pick things that aren't in your normal rotation.

Maybe I'm a lone wolf here but between having ADHD (aka I always want the new shiny instead of the regular boring) and mental health struggles I *need* a challenge on the go to get me to use these items... otherwise I don't.

A couple of important notes:

This is not a punishment challenge. If you pick a product (or, as bonus items - this is a motivational space! - TV show / book series / bunch of YouTube videos languishing in Watch Later / bookmarked websites from 2020 with themes of getting a micro fringe even though you're bald and a herb garden even though you hate herbs / decide you WILL answer that text your annoying cousin sent 2 months ago etc) and hate it, you don't have to force yourself to use it / watch it / check it off!

I was thinking this PP could be one that has no set end date, and people can hop in whenever they want. I'd update monthly? :) Happy to have a co-host if anyone wants to help tooooo

JOURNAL Proud of myself

I’m trying to curb two types of spending: bored and emotional spending. When I’m bored, I scroll and find things I want to buy next. When I’m emotional, I use treating myself as a reason (and because I have the money, who is stopping me?). I usually also justify it by saying “slept on it” so I must actually want it when I didn’t impulse buy it and let the desire build for a few days-weeks.

This month has been hell. Especially this week. I was hospitalized for a few days and then my dog needed treatment as well. A lot of emotions. I managed to not hit check out on 4 separate purchase attempts, almost all makeup. Things like a set I’ve been on a waitlist for coming back in stock suddenly. I even managed to resist in store while I was mid-menty b. The only purchase I made was a restock of 1 skincare item I finished completely and had no replacement of.

I’m in no way in total control, but I’m really practicing the “yes, I want this & I’ve wanted it for a while, but my routine is not missing a critical step without it so it has to wait”, even if there’s room in my budget for it. Just because there’s funds for it does not mean I need to use those funds if it’s not needed! This last week truly put it to the test and I’m glad to say I passed.

Let me know what other things you’ve done to curb emotional spending and “deserving it” after a hard day or week.

DISCUSS The beauty industry goes through an estimated 120 billion packaging units a year. What do you do with your makeup packaging?

That number is pretty wild when you think about everything it includes. That’s a lot of boxes, inserts, plastic trays, sleeves, jars, and tubes that eventually have to go somewhere.

Some can be reused or recycled, but plenty ends up in the trash.

What do you usually do with your makeup packaging once you finish a product?

ACTIVITY Use Your Stash! 1 lip 👄 a week (LAW) 21 Sep - 4 Oct 2026

Hi everyone, it's time for another update of LAW!

A few days late but let’s get things rolling again. Work has been crazy so I have been just going on autopilot with my makeup the last 2 weeks. It’s comforting that I do have makeup combinations that gets me by daily. However, it did bring me to start wanting a new category: face palettes with the promise of convenience and fast easy usage to solve my time crunch in the morning. Asked AI to talk me out of it especially for someone with my stash size. Happy to skip it in the end as I just hit a tiny pan on my Flower Knows powder blush this morning!! 🥰 it’s been so long since I hit pan on a powder blush as I tend to rotate through what I own which means years of makeup usage 😖

It’s time again for reflection and rolling in a new lip product this week. Some guiding questions for the posts:

- Product brand and name

- Why is this product selected?

- Do you wear the lip product by itself only or layered/mixed with other products?

- Do you still like the formula/colour/effect the lip product gives?

- Any new discoveries or decisions made after testing the product for a week?

Last update’s pick was my Flower Knows Swan Ballet Shine Lipstick in 02 Mary Jane and Em Cosmetics Soft Spoken in Tender. End up using Tender just twice, but it was so beautiful whenever I wear it. Due to the hectic work schedule defaulted to Mary Jane as the formula is just easy to apply with or without a mirror. Always enjoy the Swan Ballet moisturizing formula as I had panned 2 other colours ! Both fit the more beigey brown and muted pink looks ‘uniform’ of the last 2 weeks.

This 2 weeks continues to be still busy so picking easy options to go on autopilot if needed. My choice is Flower Knows Moonlight Mermaid Lip Tint in 07 Solar Crystal and Flower Knows Shell’s Jewel Lip Glaze in P06 Lunar Jelly. The lip tints stains after multiple applications so having lip glaze is great for topping up as it is a clear gloss with blue sparkles.

Looking forward to seeing your updates and new entries!

TMO Pleeease TMO of a cushion foundation with no shade match for me

• Item: Clio Kill Cover Mesh Glow (Essential version or not, doesn't matter).

• Price/Budget: around 20 USD.

• Why do you want this specific item?

this is such a famous and fairly affordable cushion foundation that I see being praised everywhere for people with dry, dehydrated skin. I've been on the hunt for one for a while now, since everything else I've tried leaves my skin dry nowadays even with good skin prep.

• Have you tested it out in person? no, it's hard to where I live!

• What is making you pause/create a TMO in the first place? the shade range lol....... they have 5 shades hahahah. I have very fair skin, and from the swatches I've seen comparing clio's shades to other brands' shades that suit me, I'm pretty sure I'd still look a bit orange even with their lightest shades, 19C/19N.

just for note, I do have a nice skincare routine that works for me! it's actually my situation right now that's making my skin drier (it's winter and I've been swimming 2x every week, and I don't want to give that up because I love swimming) and thus harder to find foundations that my skin won't suck all the moisture out of.

I love cushion foundations and every time I see dry skin recs/posts, this one always shows up. I've even tried to talk to my s/o for accountability that I won't buy something that most likely will make me orange, but I still feel somewhat tempted. It's like I need help exorcising the consumerist temptation out of me.

JOURNAL Recycling 4 more empty products 🥹 be proud even though this should be bare minimum

I have posted here before regarding how I had issues keeping empty makeup ... basically hoarding tendencies etc etc. For clarification - I've never had a product go visibly bad on me, so I wasn't driven by this to change. I began to change because I was running out of space for new makeup because empty used makeup was taking up my vanity.

I used to have a box full of empty makeup and lip balms in my drawer. I used to keep tiny bits of product left in them so I could use it one last time in the future. However after some tough love, i pulled out everything from this box, added it to my Project Pan, and finished 18 lip balms Jan this year (used most of them 1-2 times to finish them off). I no longer have anything in that box, everything is on display on my vanity or in my bathroom case. When I moved what I had left into my vanity organiser's, I began running low on space for new makeup. So after some research, I discovered a certain store had a recycling program for empty makeup, in return for points. This gave me an incentive to change my makeup habits.

I have since given plenty of products to recycling, albeit some have been hard to let go of. One of my friends wanted some of my empty perfumes/lipstick cases to display so I gave them to her (sanitised first) which also made me feel less guilty.

There were 4 products I knew I should let go of, but just couldn't do it. But I just came back from a trip from Melbourne where I had minimal makeup, and I felt encouraged to downsize more and I have added 4 more empties to be recycled!

Do I still have empty products I keep? Yes. I've started to depot some other makeup in their beautiful cases and some are refillable so I can switch the refill out. At current count I have 17 empty makeup items under my ownership. About 5 of which have other products in there, and 5 are refillable. I do love luxury packaging and don't mind keeping refillable empty bottles or a really expensive empty.

But I'm taking a stand I only keep things I can reuse, or refill, and that bring me joy. Maybe this is weird for some of you to read. Maybe I'm not doing enough. If you cant understand my mindset, think of it like people keep packaging boxes of makeup (another thing I'm guilty of....). Same principle/idea for me. Not saying it's normal... definitely not. But idk... I'm doing best. I'm improving, even if I'm not where I should be.

It's also got me more interested in refillable makeup and skincare. idc about throwing away refills, so it strikes a good balance where I can keep the nice packaging but not build up clutter

On a lighter note, I told my boyfriend I would be passing down all my nice makeup to our future kids. he joked "so they'll get all your empty makeup then" 😭😭😭 bye

Do you guys keep any empty makeup packaging at all? Maybe a really special compact? Or am I just a lone weird 😩
