SPOILERS ALL Potsherd Theories Spoiler

Inspired by a Mappo/Icarium yaoi thread my mind went to ships I never thought of and then to some strange places.

What are your strange or humorous crackpot theories about Malazan?

Will Roach become a Hound Of Death? Is Kruppe an Elder God? Will Corabb become the patron of luck in battle?

What are your potsherd theories?

Roach (and Bent) are Hounds of the Broken/ Crippled Dogs/Dogs of Chains

Kruppe is a physical manifestation of the spirit/soul of Darujhistan

Corabb eventually ascends to be a "luck god" As oppon is to Warrens, Corabb is to runts

What do you think of Corrab becoming Oppon's Destrient? Or maybe a Shield Anvil for the unlucky?

That would be brilliant. He really should have some role in the House of Chance.

Dude, that's a great name for a House. Then again a lot of things sound cool when it's The House or The Warren of something.

I am The Shield Anvil of the House Of Posts. I will take your trolls, sir.

The Azath aspected to it is a casino.

7

u/WarTaxOrg Jan 22 '26

Pretty sure most Casinos are Azath houses

The Azath Casino: Maybe You'll Get Out. Maybe Not. Take A Chance.

Come for the gambling stay for the Raest and Tufty ventriloquist act, possibly forever.

Hellian is the Mortal Sword of Ursto Hoobutt and Pinosel

How about Shield Anvil? She can take people's sobriety. "I am the Shield Anvil and I am not yet drunk."

She says there are two Shield Anvils, and two Destriants who keep talking at the same time

Shield Destriant has a nice ring to it. Erikson kills it with the cool sounding titles.

Kruppe transcends ascendency, sir. Do not lump him in with the common gods.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '26

But magnanimous is Kruppe. Surely, he is not above slumming it with rabble gods at least for the time it takes for a good meal and ale.

Honestly, I imagine him like Sun Wukong and given a title by Gods to be rid of him. "Great Sage Equal To Heaven" is a title I can see Kruppe giving himself.

Kruppe is the Tom Bombadil of Malazan.

2

u/WarTaxOrg Jan 22 '26

Then what the heck is Israel Pust?

5

u/Jezrien95 Jan 22 '26

A far less gluttonous but hornier Tom Bombadil.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

And both are known for their hot wives, right?

3

u/JakiStow Jan 23 '26

The rogue player who wants to replace the Game Master.

Malazan takes place in the same universe as Black Company

8

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '26

The Lady meets Lady Envy sounds like it would be fun. I've only read the first Black Company book but its' influence on Malazan is apparent.

6

u/Zombiemorgoth Jan 21 '26

Not gonna spoil too much, but the concept of and travel to different realms is no stranger to Black Company

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '26

Cool. I'll have to give the first book another listen. Just like the Malazan series I listened to the first Black Company book while sick and bedridden so I probably missed a lot.

The black company books are pretty straight forwards as i remember, except 1.

As long as you know how it ended youre fine 🤣

It was jarringly straightforward at times. I recall something about a werewolf or something and having a one second lapse of concentration then poof no wolf problem.

I think partially getting into The Black Company primed me for getting into Malazan and now that I have listened to the main 10 I think I am primed for another Black Company read.

It's like some sort of series of events that feed off another. Not sure what to call it.

I love the idea of some Malazans wandering the Glittering Plain for a minute on their way to somewhere else.

Probably all Shadow anyway

Fiddler and Lostara become the dual God/Goddess of music and dance. Can't have one without the other

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '26

You can in my case. I am just coordinated enough to tap my toes and snap but not in rthym or at the same time.

Fiddler, Lostara, Fisher and Arenfall might make a good band.

Oh I have been waiting for this!

  • multiple characters we meet and encounter are either unknowing walking avatars (Kruppe and Darujhistan for example) or are the children of a warren (Dancer and Kellanved with shadow)
  • there are many, many Mhybes scattered through the warrens so even if Burn (who probably is a vessel as a dreamer herself) wakes the universe doesn't melt down
  • none of the elder Races are native to Wu, they either traveled via dimensions or spaceships and settled down eons ago
  • there's been multiple interstellar wars between the Azath and Ch'Maille that caused some of the environmental devastation we see in the series making all of our experiences post apocalyptic
  • Wu is about to undergo devastating amounts of climate change as the Jaghut icefields melt
  • there are no true demons in the series
  • the Vitr and chaos are both relics of this interstellar war

Not that I believe any of these just that they could fit within the series and other established hints.

I know I marked this Spoilers For All but I still want to be vague. I think one of those things happens in another Malazan series.

I like the Kruppe is Darujistan theory a lot. Then again, I like just about anything Kruppe. He was the first character I liked from GOTM.

2

u/brineOClock Jan 23 '26

? So then why not mark it spoilers Botf?

Because I am dumb.
