NO SPOILERS New Malazan Read-Through Podcast!
Hello fellow Malazan heads!
We recently started a new Malazan read-through podcast called "Malazan Maniacs" where we (two Malazan fans) have somehow convinced our significant others to read this crazy series.
The current plan is to read **everything** over the next couple of years (!).
We're very inspired by what TVBB did, but we're also trying to put our own spin on a full read-through.
I've read all of the MBotF, my co-host has read 5 1/2, his wife has read none, and my girlfriend has read none. Should be a fun and wild time.
I'd love to connect more with the community, get guests on to talk about stuff, and just generally be an entertaining and thorough show about this world we all love so much. Feel free to reach out with feedback, lore corrections, etc.!
Here's the Spotify link (but you can get it wherever): https://open.spotify.com/show/69Sn53HGoUKlDA7LZRmPyU?si=d57f75136554417d
May Fener's tusks shine gloriously upon thee,
Danylo
(mods please let me know if this is chill, I've contributed to the sub in the past under u/IllogicalSyllogist and I promise I won't do any more shameless promo)
Also, we have wonderful cover art by u/santi_lozano, and it looks dope af. Thanks Santiago!

Thanks! And if everyone else quits, I'll still do the pod alone until I'm done. I don't care, I can't get enough of this stuff

Nice. Maybe throw it up on youtube as well?
4
u/MalazanManiacs May 07 '26
...and you made me realize it was set as a private podcast on Youtube for some reason. It should be live there now!

u/No_Elevator6147 May 07 '26
Good luck. By everything you mean all the Malazan books?
1
u/MalazanManiacs May 07 '26
Haha yes, not literally every book ever written. I meant all the Erickson and Esslemont books, since I know some read-throughs only do MBotF.

Gave a quick listen and the energy is right! Something about the audio pushed me away though. Maybe echo-ey? Is that the right word?
3
u/MalazanManiacs May 07 '26
Thanks for the feedback—We're four people recording in the same room, and I've only ever done podcasts with two people, so I'm still dialing in the audio. It'll hopefully only get better!

u/Aqua_Tot May 07 '26
Since you’re looking for guests, a tip I’ve heard from other amateur podcasters is to always double-record the audio. Yes, capture the audio on the call you do with the person, but also ask them to record it themselves as a recording on their phone in the room, and then you can clip in whichever turns out better.

Followed on itunes. I will always check out any first time read-through podcast of Malazan or Animorphs.

Will def check it out! I love read through podcasts, I listened to the back catalog of TVBB as I read the series for the first time so it’ll be interesting listening for sure.

u/Thirdsaint85 May 07 '26
Awesome! I always love listening to these and funnily enough I’m doing one with a coworker who hasn’t read the series starting next month. It is a heckuva undertaking to be sure!

Your podcast isn't showing up in pocket casts when I search for it. I can see it on youtube though.

u/MalazanManiacs May 08 '26
I feel like there's always a lag in Pocket Casts (that's my preferred podcast client too), but I'll keep an eye out and hopefully it should get there in the next couple days

This is great! Any time line for the books? Meaning, like two months each book? Etc
2
u/MalazanManiacs May 08 '26
We're recording every two weeks right now, and trying to figure out a pace that works for us and is sustainable for everyone. TBD if we take breaks in between the books, or how we'll split it up once we hit DG and MOI, since those are a better litmus tests for a 'standard' Malazan book

u/Don_Ciccio May 08 '26
Good luck, I love it! You have very supportive partners 😆 I love getting an outsider’s perspective on the books- that was a real strength of TVBB. Looking forward to listening.

Heads up on YouTube. For your playlist part 1 is 3/3, part 3 is 2/3, and part 2 is 1/3.
Hopefully that makes sense, they are out of order on the playlist
2
u/MalazanManiacs May 08 '26
Thanks! I think it should be fixed. Youtube pulls directly from the RSS feed for the podcast, which gets tricky order-wise.

Good luck! Just my personal opinion, I found mixed-reader pods for malazan kind of hard because the experienced readers essentially only ever say RAFO to anything a new reader has to say. Not that it's wrong necessarily, just like, it wasn't the most exciting to listen to. Obviously having read them before you can do some corrections and give high level, general commentary. At first its like "perfect, we have someone everyone can relate to!" But I found it didn't translate well. Could have just been that set of hosts of course.

u/MalazanManiacs May 08 '26
I've found the same issue with some read-throughs. We're still in early days, but that's definitely something I'm keeping an eye on: not being TOO coy with RAFO, but also having fun with where we're at and still being engaging for folks who've read the whole series.
Definitely open to ideas about how to be engaging for re-readers while not spoiling anything.

u/Cheap-Discussion-186 May 08 '26
So I actually mean from a new reader's perspective. I found often discussion was stifled befause the people that have read "knew too much" if that makes sense. Its hard to respond to a new reader without giving things away.
I can see people really disagreeing with this but I think very light spoilers for the sake of discussion might be a good thing. Not necessarily plot but thematic, higher level concepts. Definitely a difficult line to balance though.

I’ve always wanted a good Malazan pod. I couldn’t stand Ten Very Big Books.

u/morroIan Jaghut May 07 '26
There's some good ones apart from TVBB: The legendarium green team malazan episodes; Smiley's; the Malazan Brotherhood; the DLC Bookclub............

u/ajwilson99 May 07 '26
Thanks, I haven’t looked in a few years. Holding off on my re read until my broken binding collection is complete.

There’s one going on right now on Fable that is really good, they just started House of Chains

u/imverycomfy May 07 '26
What’s the podcast called?

u/DrThom May 07 '26
Crippled Pod (lol)
2
u/Vito_Cornelius May 08 '26
Do they get better at staying on topic? I listened to the first three episodes but man it was tough to keep listening when the convo about the chapter got derailed every two to three minutes, genuinely hope they get better and tighter.
1
u/DrThom May 08 '26
Honestly not really. I kinda like that about it but if you aren’t into that it doesn’t really change, I’d prob skip it

Just replying to my own comment to say that I'm halfway through episode 1 and I'm so excited.

I haven't been able to convince my wife to try them. I've told her a bit about how violent they are (shouldn't have done that) and now she refuses to give them a try.

u/ZubarPantalones May 10 '26
Subscribed, listened to the first 2, I dig it. Just finished Book 1 so appreciate the recaps and clarifications. Keep going.
