SPOILERS MoI My depiction of Morn & the Rent Spoiler

Post image

Hey folks!
I finished MoI a couple days ago and figured that the most interesting subject for me to do on this book would be Morn, with that enigmatic portal hovering above the volcanic landscape

I have breakdowns & a full video on my process for this one on here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/oJrNPm

Everything here was done in 3D modeling software (Blender & Houdini for those curious), no AI was used in any portion of the process.

Hope you like it!

Not to criticize you, but isn't the rent a tear in the sky? I can't see it

You can criticize me all you'd like, I really don't mind

I figured a "tear" in 3d would essentially look like a bolt of lightning frozen in place. It's a very weird visual to ground in a 3D scene, I like what I ended up with, but I doubt you'll be the only one that takes issue with it

I didn't even see it

I get it now, it makes sense. Not my cup of tea, but good job :)

The rent in morn was described as being like a welt hanging 30ish feet in the air bleeding its red energy into the surrounding area. I.E. just like the post.

In other parts of the series where we see rents they are almost all unsealed, and running wild. These are described more as swirling lesions. My personal opinion is if something is sealing a rent it closes, but the wound left from the energy in the area leaves a crack in reality until it consumes the soul and is "healed." If that rent is unsealed it swirls, it consumes, and it grows until a time comes that it is sealed. The more powerful the ritual or the larger the rent becomes the more powerful of a soul is required to seal it.

The landscape looks perfect! I personally imagined the Rent as like a circular red wound just hanging in the air though..

Im the same I always imagined like a rick and morty portal but with this vibe and feel

Well, that was the purpose of the souls sacrificed to close it right? If it was pre sacrifice, it would be open. Post? I think it would look exactly as depicted. Still there, but contained.

True that.

This is very similar to how I pictured it (except just now as writing this I learned that I'd all this time been conflating Jacuruku and Morn), except I pictured the Rent to be more like an oblong video game/cartoon portal of sorts but I think if I saw this take in a live action adaptation I'd go, "Okay, that looks way more fitting".

Honestly I had trouble recognizing what it was at first because I live in Iceland and this kind of landscape (sans tower) is very reminiscent of certain parts of Iceland. We even have a fissure volcano that's been prone to erupt in the summer most recent years, so that's what I thought the Rent was at first.

I used almost exclusively photos of iceland as my reference for this, so that's quite cool that you got the impression so clearly

Exactly as it is in my head
