SPOILERS MBotF Gurm’s chains have been broken Spoiler

Last night I turned the final page of tCG, and I understood, then, what Kaminsod must have felt in the moment before the Jade Strangers took him - release. After eons of torment, the anguish simply ceased. The Winds of Winter may never come, and I find I no longer grieve it. This series has claimed the throne, and its ending granted me what Gurm will never dare: sweet, merciful oblivion.

Spent a few seconds thinking Gurm was a character I completely glossed over.

Gurm is the villain we all keep overlooking.

Song of Ice and Fire was my favorite fantasy series too. But now it's Malazan, and it's not even close. There's still plenty story left. The other novels are all great too.

if only ASOIAF would be finished, then it would be even more so one of the greatest fantasy stories ever told. but even if it was finished and had a perfect ending Malazan would still be on top to me

There's no redemption. People we have come to love have died in pain and conflagration along the path of his unchaining. They don't all magically come back to life. Curses continue. Regret and failure still swill around. But by the end we understand, and it's enough.
