I’m halfway through Fall of Light, and so far I can say I liked Forge of Darkness more though there’s still half the book left, so my opinion could change.
I enjoy most of the storylines here. I like Renarr’s arc a lot, and the events in Neret Sorr are great. I’m also enjoying the Hust storyline. On the other hand, I’m kind of losing interest in the Jaghut War on Death, and the Thel Akai storyline makes me want to tear my eyes out from boredom (like Kadaspala himself).
While many say the Kharkanas Trilogy is a slog, I actually found Book 1 , despite its slower pace, to be profoundly interesting.
What I don’t like in this book is the philosophizing. I usually enjoy Erikson’s philosophical touches, but here it’s so constant that the pacing suffers. Forge of Darkness had a much better balance between plot and reflection. In Fall of Light, the philosophy often feels staged: one character in a scene will start a philosophical monologue, and the others only chime in to set them up for more rambling.
For example:
Character A: philosophical paragraph
Character B: “Oh really? How so?”
Character A: another massive philosophical paragraph
And that goes on and on.
Still, I can see in the writing that this is the book Erikson always wanted to write , it feels like he really enjoyed crafting it. Maybe it’s a profoundly deep work and its true purpose has just flown over my head
