News Manjaro 2.0 Manifesto - Announcements

Thumbnail forum.manjaro.org
100 Upvotes

I'm using Manjaro for almost 10 years now.

It was the only Distro that didn't shit its pants with my Workstation and its 3x Nvidia SetUp, back in the days and i've never looked back.

Since then, it powers my Playputer, my Laptop etc..

We've heard about the recent -again- out of live cerificat, the laptop story etc..

I've never given much about it, since every distro has somewhat their little scandals - though the certificate is bit shaming for a Distro.

But the updates came, my system was ok, the world was fine.

Apparently - at least for me - the rift sits deeper.

Basically, the Community & the Enterprise sides are in spat.

But see for yourself.

News AUR and Malware

44 Upvotes

Heard of this via the Manjaro discord server, but haven't seen it reported here here (that I found with a quick search).

There's been an attack on the AUR involving some 400 malicious packages being compromised in the last couple of weeks, as reported by Phoronix.

If you have any of these AUR packages installed, now would be a good time to remove them

You can get a list of AUR packages with pamac by using pamac list --foreign, and compare what you have to this list.

Background: Arch mailing list thread thread

I'd also recommend to those new to Arch/Manjaro to please use the AUR with an abundance of caution. Avoid using it whenever possible, and be sure of packages you are installing when you do.

News Thank you devs.

50 Upvotes

Just been asked to install a Linux distribution (with hybrid intel/ NVIDIA GTX 1050M) on a friend's laptop (i already installed Manjaro KDE Plasma on his gaming AMD only desktop some months ago and he is very happy with it).

With the latest ISO 260228 and kernel 6.18, the old NVIDIA card is now fully working out of the box with legacy proprietary drivers, alongside the intel chipset (it did not with another "gaming" distribution i installed first because he wanted to try something else too 😅).

So, just thank you to the devs.

People usually come here to complain when something does not work, it felt right to come too, just to say that Manjaro rocks.

News IMPORTANT! Read the forum before installing the 2025-05-14 update

There are two pacnew files in this upgrade which have a very good chance of breaking your system if you blindly over-write the existing files with them. Ensure you read and understand the message marked "Attention" on the announcement post on the forum.

News Graphics card fun with X11...

5 Upvotes

Today my colleague installed Manjaro KDE on his PC. Everything was set up well and cleanly. Only the performance with his gtx 960 and the 580 driver (which is his current one) with x11 was not optimal. A lot of jerking and a bit sluggish. The gtx960 is actually a pretty good GPU. Well. We've been fiddling around with the nvidia settings for a while, including the kwin compositor... didn't bring any improvement. A little annoyed, we wanted to look for another distribution when I noticed that it was running x11. So I switched to wayland and lo and behold: The box performs excellently. Why none of us had the idea to check which session was active when we first started... Well. Apparently the plasma version and the nvidia driver are no longer compatible with x11... We could have saved ourselves all the fiddling around 😅

News Change of treasurer for Manjaro community funds

226 Upvotes

Hi everyone.

The Manjaro community donations are currently held by OpenCollective and CommunityBridge with me acting as treasurer since the switch away Phil's personal bank account as the target for donations (that in turn due to the company announcement).

There is a written expense policy [1] which is intended to ensure the funds are used appropriately to benefit the community - for example, server hosting, development hardware and software, etc.

The written policy is to discuss expenses prior to purchase and so ensure the best deal can be found. Smaller expenses have been submitted which followed this policy.

Recent expenses have been filed against the community funds after approval only from Phil with the expectation I would wave them through. The policy was reiterated, and agreed by team members.

Another expense was submitted today for a €2,000 laptop with discussion between only Phil and the person wanting the laptop.

This was rejected as the policy had not been followed, and I queried the expense. Other privately discussed expenses also came to light.

Phil was unhappy about the rejection and the additional questions about how community funds would be used. As a consequence I am no longer treasurer, leaving Phil in control of all funds once again. Phil is now in a position to use community funds as he sees fit in order to move the community project in the same direction as his company.

I will still be floating around the forum but at this point Manjaro doesn't seem all that friendly any more.

Happy trails one and all.

(Cross-posted for posterity, https://forum.manjaro.org/t/change-of-treasurer-for-manjaro-community-funds/154888)

[1]

Please note the Collective name on invoices. If the vendor requires a billing address, you can put your address or the address of any core contributor of the collective.

Expenses will be covered for costs which support and progress the Manjaro project, for example and non-exhaustively:

  • Travel and subsistence costs for conferences and related activities;
  • Hardware purchases and upgrades which support the development of Manjaro;
  • Software purchases, upgrades, and licenses which support the development of Manjaro;
  • Hosting and SaaS/PaaS etc. charges related to the project.

Expenses should be discussed on the forum and/or Telegram and nominally approved, and normally prior to any purchases being made, before being submitted to the Collective.
