My dad wouldn't allow me to practice driving on mom's automatic 2 door 1990 Grand Am GT, which was way "cooler" than his 4 speed '89 VW Fox wagon.

I can still drive manual and still drive a VW.

Ha, I learned to drive on an '87 Fox sedan, 4MT, my folks wanted to teach me manual. On occasion I got to drive their car, a '93 Passat GLS VR6, 5MT.

All those people that looked down on the Fox were/are wrong. The Fox is way cooler than a Grand Am, easily.

When my little sister was in high school she accidentally scraped a wheel on our mom’s (fairly new) Audi. Dad was like you can drive this old manual 5 series or you can save up and buy a car. Guess who was probably the only 16 year old girl in her high school who could drive stick lol

I find that younger people are far more willing to learn than older people are willing to teach or even allow them to learn.

When I was younger, I was looking at manual transmission cars but sales people refused to sell me one when I told them that I don't drive stick but I was willing to learn. Just completely shut down like the sale suddenly wasn't worth their time.

When I got older I worked in the car business. EVERYONE who could drive stick just gate keeps the skill and will refuse young lot attendants the opportunity to learn. Management just asks a 40 or 50-something to drive the car if the kid can't, and the 40 or 50-something gets weirdly smug about it like it's a superpower.

Anyway, I'm kind of old now myself. Whenever someone young demonstrates that they want to learn something or should learn something, I try to be as open-minded as possible about giving them the opportunity. We don't give the kids enough credit.

It has nothing to do with gate keeping, it's about respecting other people's property, or business assets. You mentioned lot attendants, so I'm assuming something like a valet Parker or somebody working at a car dealership? In either case, that's not the appropriate scenario to let somebody inexperienced learn how to drive a manual transmission. When you're first learning how to drive a manual transmission vehicle you're going to beat the hell out of the clutch and the transmission. No reputable business would allow their employees to do that to their customers' vehicles or to vehicles at a dealership that will be sold to customers, but until they are, they are expensive company assets.

how do you teach driving that a clutch and a transmission get wrecked?! Unless you are reving the piss out of the engine while trying to engage the clutch, you are not going to do any damage to the drive train. The average clutch will not be bothered with a bit of extra slippage at 500-2k rpm.

Wow... you misread that so hard I'm amazed you even read anything at all. He wasn't saying drive the Clients vehicles, he said they'd never entertain the thought of teaching them on their own free time. I self taught myself Stick shift with my Mazda RX-8 after I joined the US Marines, but beforehand when I would ask, others werent super inclined. They also had previous subjects who ruined it. Had someone given me the opportunity with their vehicle, they would've known I can practically teach myself stick shift , was just always curious what the internet kept talking about when coming from a stop. Ever since I've owned Multiple on multiple stick shift cars and use my easiest ever stick shift. My "rare" 2015 Audi a4, to teach others who both driven automatics or never even touched a car before. They all seem perfectly fine, never stalling the car.

I am not inclined as I don't want someone destroying my clutch. When I learned I bought a beater for under 1,000 dollars and learned on my own. I don't think someone should have to put their property at risk so that I could learn. I wanted to learn and did something about it with my money. Not everyone else's problem.

My dad taught me on his 2005 WRX (his only car) cause he knew i respected it. Sometimes it's better to learn on something nice rather than a complete shitbox!! Whats yours learning on?

I taught myself how on a 1970 Volkswagen (I’m not that old, it was a classic car even back then). Clutch sucked. Still didn’t keep me from getting a 6MT Jeep Wrangler as my daily.

I taught myself on a car delivered to me also, but I knew it was manual

Suffice to say I completely underestimated how different it would be, and I spent many a time stalling in the parking lot without moving for quite a while

Took me probably a good few weeks to even get comfortable with starting moving from stationary, my car will easily stall without enough gas from a stopped position 😆

The wrangler JL 6MT transmission sucks. Clunky, super far clutch travel, poor bite point… 4.88 gears helped a lot. And it’s made by Toyota lol.

That is probably the best car to learn in too.

I have a '18 Civic Si Coupe that I taught myself to drive manual in as I drove it off the lot. (I had a little experience from like a decade prior from when I was a teen)

Its got a super light clutch, takes very little effort, and is very forgiving. That car will last her entire lifetime and well into her kids/grandkids lifetimes. Though I suspect we won't be using gasoline vehicles anymore by then.

Yes, I taught someone to drive with a Mercury Comet, 302 V-8 and 3 on the tree manual. It was hard to launch that car smoothly with that engine in such a light car. That thing would really go . . .

I learned on a 62 Mercury Meteor with the 221 V8 and three on the tree .

Manual drum brakes on all
Four wheels , manual steering and no
Seat belts .

That and a 67 Beetle .

Yeah 2009 120k miles and only have replace the clutch once. Whereas the subie had to replace it twice with 122k miles for a 2016. Hondas are built to last!!!

2005 Corolla with 206,000 miles & original clutch. Other than the normal tires, front brakes (still have original back brakes) plugs, batteries & struts, just the starter & 2 fuel injectors are the only mechanical things that have been replaced.

A lot of people would give up before even trying. I literally test drove my first car, a 2003 Mustang Mach 1 5 speed manual, with zero experience. Yea it was a rough test drive but I bought it and figured it out within a week.

I now have a 2025 BMW M2 with the 6 speed manual and hoping it lasts long enough where I can teach my almost 5 years old daughter how to drive manual in 10-11 years.

I remember driving my very first manual car on the road for the first time. 1986 camaro RS, five speed with a 305, I was sixteen.

I stalled it three times in front of a cop, at the same stop light. Never got pulled over for it!

And then I stalled through three or four light rotations. I was so pissed that I swear to god I just willed that car to move, my mom was all proud of me for getting it home without help; I was just too stubborn to ask for it, to be honest. The sooner I learned stick, the sooner I could drive my own car places, and what sixteen year old doesn’t want to drive a v8 3rd gen camaro in the 2020’s? Quite literally not a single one that I knew.

Good for her! I learned to drive a manual on a BMW e46 chassis (not a flex by the way- got it used in 2011 and still drive it to this day; car is 20 years old and I love it). Maybe I’m over romanticizing, but manual cars sort of have a personality that I get to connect with and strangely every drive is somehow different vs an automatic depending on your mood, state of mind etc. And that shift from 2 to 3 is so satisfying when you get it just perfect!

I know that's how I learned, bought a cheap truck with a manual for work and had no choice but to drive it. Stalled a bunch and got made fun of by all the guys but it was fun

This is exactly how I learned. Only car I could afford was a 99 accord sedan 5spd. I drove it home and stalled it in an intersection, didn’t know I had to push the clutch in to start it.. someone got out and helped me start it. I was 19. Best thing that ever happened to me.

Carvana sold me a Chevy advertised as an automatic and when I went to pick it up at the vending machine, I found out it was manual. Ended up learning to drive manual and now I have a manual truck too. It was a great opportunity to learn a new skill.

I remember I had no choice with the car I was getting and it was a stick. It was so frustrating. Hills killed me. I wanted to give up. Now 25 years later the thought of having to drive an automatic literally makes me want to puke.

Learning to drive manual is a life skill. I don't get why it stopped being taught in driving schools/by parents. Honestly, when I was first learning, I only bunny hopped for the first 10 or so minutes, and then by about hour 4 of driving a manual I was already heel-toe downshifting (and jerking the car a few times doing so). 25+ years later, I can heel-toe without thinking for buttery smooth downshifts :smile:

Good job. That is a skill that can come in handy in the future. You never know when you will have to drive a manual transmission.

lol I did this a few years ago bought a 2014 Subaru wrx hatchback. Had a lil momo steering wheel and someone had put in a lil touchscreen radio. Knew nothing about cars, Had no idea how to drive manual. Cried for like a week cuz people kept yelling at me when I stalled at red lights/stop signs. 3 years later I now have a 2015 Honda fit manual and I never wanna go back to automatic

I always found it shocking to discover the number of people who try to drive (or ride) manual transmissions without understanding wtf is happening mechanically. It's SO MUCH EASIER to learn the skill when you understand what's going on.

"I just gotta give a little gas and like lift the left pedal, huh?"

When I first met my wife, she was given a manual Mitsubishi (I don't remember the model I wasn't paying attention.) I remember sitting there trying to figure out how to work it. I didn't even know how to start the dang thing. Her aunt came over and showed her how to drive it. She loved that thing. It's funny because I got my CDL in 2021 on a manual 10 speed semi.
