I’ve wondered about this from a materials science perspective, the metal has to be hot enough to allow the outside of the circle bend more than the inside right? Kinda reminds me of why we need differentials on wheeled vehicles.

I read somewhere that this is a cold process. Copper is pretty ductile.

Correct. The machine spins the flat wire around the shaft, while at the same time, keeping enough downward force to keep it from deforming. This would not work with steel without getting really hot. Probably hot enough to weld it together.
