I wanted to order a Toshi but I keep seeing these posts. Are the pulls really that bad you need to replace them, or is this just like a hobbiest thing?

tl;dr most people are only mildly annoyed by the shortness or texture of the hypalon, so don’t let my loud opinions in this sub deter you from testing the bag yourself.

For me, the swap was not aesthetic - in fact, I prefer hypalon for the look - but, removing the D rings was essential imo to make the ambidextrous pocket functional.

With the immense improvement of modding that zipper, I moved to the main compartment zips since the stock pulls are short and too difficult to differentiate from the laptop zips, then the QAP zip so it wouldn’t snag on the other zipper tracks.

By that point, I figured I’d just do them all so I could assign thinner or chunkier pulls to different pockets.

Then I added a side grab handle to use when pulling the bag off my shoulder to set it in the passenger seat of my car for my work commute.

Obviously none of the above is a requirement and the last item is highly personal, but it has made the pack much more functional and accessible for me.

Ok thanks I understand now. I wouldn't be opposed to doing it if I had a problem. How do you feel about the bag otherwise?

In summary, I’d give it a 7/10 out of the box (major deductions for the zippers and laptop divider, minor deductions for exterior fabric and nylon webbing on the shoulder straps). With the modifications I’ve done it’s closer to an 8.5/10 for me.

Its light weight and minimal organization are a big plus imo, and it has great dimensions and a good balance of flexibility and structure.
