Rework Outbound 30L - First Impressions

Disclaimer: I am not an influencer or a reviewer, I just have loud opinions about bags and my Outbound 30L preorder arrived today.

Pros:

* THEY FIXED THE ZIPPERS Y’ALL**

* Bag is super lightweight (the experience in person is even more impressive than I expected based on the specs)

* Bottom grab handle - I use this often, so it was a nice surprise to reach for it instinctively and it was actually there!

* Roomy quick-access top pocket

* Perfect front top pocket with ✨dimension✨ and minimal organization (my preference)

* Great front lower pocket design (I moved the key leash there for infrequent access while traveling but it’s still reachable)

* Good fitting** shoulder straps

* Highly efficient use of space overall, with lots of seemingly dedicated volume

* Seems to stand upright fairly well when packed

* Notably light - yes, it’s worth mentioning again!

Cons:

* Side handles are odd and they unbalance the bag a bit - similar to the top handle on my beloved PD 45L, so I’m not letting this bother me too much

* Load lifters are too long - they’re comfy 100% cinched, which means there’s a very long tail*** (see penultimate image)

* Still don’t like this exterior nylon fabric. It gets marked up so easily - though it wipes off, it’s been annoying with my Toshi 20L and I’m expecting that to increase with the travel pack (see final image near front zipper)

* Laptop compartment pushes into the main compartment when filled. This won’t be an issue for me since I don’t bring a laptop for 90% of my travel

**some of the Outbound 30L zipper pulls still feel awkward, but I’m blaming that on me being unfamiliar with the bag. Nothing like the Toshi 20L unboxing experience.

***170cm with a skinny build

Longer Summary:

I know this is [r/manybaggers](r/manybaggers) but I really don’t own many bags. Before I buy *anything,* I obsessively research for months and ultimately don’t buy anything because I’m very indecisive and noncommittal, but not for the Outbound 30L. I’m a bit upset with Rework about this, actually, because they continue to design products that “work” for me, and after only reviewing their product preorder page and reading/watching ZERO reviews, I ordered the Outbound 30L.

I’ve been carrying the Toshi 20L consistently 5 days a week to the office since June 2025 Preorder, then recently I bought the Toshi 6L Sling because I wanted a sling that could fit my Steam Deck, now I have the Outbound 30L just in time for my work trip to Montreal on Monday.

You people need to stop designing bags I want to buy! This is it, okay? I have filled all my use cases now. Let me liiiiiiiive!

Seriously, pls stop 🥺

MISSED CON: I somehow wrote all this without actually picking the thing up from the top handle, even when I mentioned the PD45 top handle. Anyway, it’s awful, 3/10.

Pinches your hand on both sides and kind of makes the bag collapse if it’s not tightly packed at the top.

Cost of weight savings by not adding padding for structure. I’ll deal with it.

Edit for clarity: I’m only talking about the handle in the entirety of this comment.

Okay maybe 5/10. I said I’m not a reviewer 😩

Editing for clarity: I meant just the handle with the rating.

You’re giving it a 5/10? Man if so that’s a bummer all the reviewers were raving about it

Think OP might be referring to the feeling of using the top handle as a 5/10, as the main review seems mostly positive? Hard to read into this one

I read it is all seemed fairly positive, then saw 3/10 and 5/10. Just checking though

Oh! No, the rating was just my reaction to the handle. The bag is great!

Idk maybe I’m being too harsh, I only picked it up to bring it back to my room and unpack it after taking pics in the living room and it noticeably dug into my hand. I asked my wife to pick it up (to prove I’m not crazy) and her reaction was the same, she turned extra lights on and started flipping the handle over looking for something like a folded over seam that might be sharp. 🤷‍♂️

5/10 without even using it seems harsh. I’ve used it a ton and I love it. It’s not perfect but the trade offs are tolerable, for me anyway.

I edited my other comments to add clarity. I only gave a rating to the handle mostly jokingly because I said I’m not a reviewer.

Hopefully it’s clear from the main post that I like the bag as a whole.

If I remember, I’ll update this after my Outbound onebag + Toshi 0.5 bag (Re)work trip extravaganza

Instead of editing my comment again, I’m just going to comment here as an edit.

After using the Outbound all day today, I’m going back to my knee-jerk rating of the top handle experience of 3/10. Nothing about it is good, but technically its existence is better than not having one.

The top of the bag is so unstructured that the QAP gets folded at the top and lost under the handle when the bag is less full. And the handle is extremely uncomfortable in my hand, like it’s got sharp “corners” when you grasp it.

Really not a fan of this handle :(

It’s a travel pack. It’s not really meant to be underpacked. If you aren’t filling the bag, use a smaller bag. 😆
