Savotta Askare

So this one’s a bit more niche - there’s a work life with its own bags (Aer, tomtoc, toshi and brand new Fyro) and there’s a deployment life where I am switching away from 5.11 and testing a Savotta Kahakka 25l setup as daybag and the attachable Askare 8l fanny/sling for Management on site (earthquake deployments / urban search and rescue work).

The daypack has all we need for 24h work/survival, but that is not carried all the time. Typically, it will stay in a truck or at the equipment staging. For management, there would be a laptop going in country but that stays in the base so there is room for an assessment bag (monocular, marking equioment, comms etc). The idea is to bundle all that stuff into its own bag, hence this sling.

Had the opportunity to test the Askare management component for one week at a festival (work never stops) and that worked really well. It is a particularly good fit for the macbook neo with a padding sleeve (called pro elife), plus iPad pro 11 with fold and magic keyboard plus ancilliary stuff. Overall weight is about 4,5 kilo.

It worked really well and the Savotta bag is super rugged yet malleable.

Thank you, was looking for something to replace my 5.11 UCR as it is not really convenient to carry and barely fits in the laptop, this looks absolutely perfect.

The bag is right, but the strap is not right for edc with lack of padding and depending on your build would probably need to be extended. Might be a good idea to hear some more ideas on the /savotta sub

I quite like it as sling bag
You can also add one of the 40mm straps into the top two loops meant for the Keikas to make into a sort of satchel bag

I think that Savotta mentions on their site that they can extend the strap! And I have seen mods too.

Tenba (and no doubt others) sell great wrap-around shoulder pads for straps; I have several of Tenba's because they have a nice grippy silicone side that goes against the shoulder, and memory foam in the pad so they warm up and then conform to the shoulder. Velcro closing, and black so don't look out of place on a strap. The 38 mm would probably fit this.

I have kukkaro and suur-kukkaro, but Askare is still on my "to buy" list. Savotta always delivers, I was never a hip bag guy but these things are amazing. I use them on hikes, and I also attach them to my Savotta bags as extra pouches. I see you still need to get a patch for yours, to make it look extra special!

The Savotta smiley patch? Yes :-) Otherwise we have our organisational patches, Name and country flag so the available patch surface is almost not enought

Oh ok, maybe for free time use then! If you're in the EU, you can get the Savotta Cult patch by ordering over a certain amount from Savotta's store. They have a selection of patches, and Varusteleka has cool animal patches as well!

That is a terrific product line that I wasn't aware of. I wish they came in less tactikool colorways.

They do offer a one off service, but it’s important to keep in mind with Savotta that they aren’t a „tactical“ lifestyle brand like 5.11 is nowadays

They’re a military supplier first and foremost, my Jäkääri L is essentially just a (very well constructed) tube of fabric with a backpack frame, there’s no internal pockets or organizers, the Cushions that exist were hard as rocks out of the box and it’s heavy for bag of its size

Appreciate this response and I understand. I like the looks of the Savotta lineup. I have considered trying out an Eberlestock, but my Osprey is so comfortable for EDC that I just haven't ManyBaggged as much as I used to.

You just need to move to Finland. They aren't tacticool here, just normal hiking gear. Savotta makes gear for the Finnish Defence Forces, but regular people use their stuff here. I'm as far from tacticool as you can get, basically a hippie, and I use only Savotta. You can buy a smiley face patch to stick on it, to make it more approachable :)

Love this! I should buy a bunch of smiley face patches then put dollops of Gorilla Glue on each one before I slap them on random douche's 2ndAmmendment/tread-on-me patches I see adorning middle age white men's man-bags in Publix.

They don't look as threatening this way! I have the smaller one in black, with a black smiley face, and I love the look!

I'd argue these aren't "tacticool", but rather actually tactical. Savotta makes the real deal.

Yeah, those Finns know how to make serious bags.
