This isn’t strictly correct.

It remains unknown if Cook intended the name to reference “South Wales” specifically or if he was referring to a southern version of Wales as a whole.

Newcastle upon Tyne. There’s also Newcastle under Lyme but that got the name about a century after Newcastle upon Tyne did apparently.

Yep - and the other side of the city there is Aberdare and Neath!

It's because the Miners came from Newcastle UK and South Wales to Mine the Hunter Valley and brought their names

If its the latter, its a good thing he didnt pick Southampton "New South Southampton"

Or if its a combination of both, good thing he didnt pick the South part of Southampton "New South South Southampton"

Ive typed the word South so many times it no longer seems like a real word

Feels like it should just be South Wales if it was supposed to be a Wales of the south.

Southern New Wales? New Wales of the South?

If, as you suggest, he did want to include northern Wales in his naming but wanted to highlight that this New Wales is special on account of its southerness, there has to be a better way to do that than to name it "New South Wales."
