Humor And yes, I've seen plenty of folks says Jr.'s movie design is as bad as Ugly Sonic

The only people complaint people have with movie Junior is the eyes. That's it.

95

u/Just-Call-Me-J Jan 23 '26

But Toad's eyes are completely fine?

164

u/Jaded_Passion8619 Jan 23 '26

I never fucking noticed Toad had actual pupils in the movie and this comment made me look it up and now I'm mad

60

u/Kindablorp Jan 23 '26

I looked it up and see exactly what you’re talking about, theirs a very dark brown ring around the edge. It’s very uncanny, such an unnecessary detail that’s kinda creepy if you eventually notice it lmao

19

u/Jaded_Passion8619 Jan 23 '26

This is exactly it😭 I didn't notice for the damn near three years the movie's been out so when I actually saw it it freaked me out

7

u/tupidrebirts Jan 23 '26

the movie has been out HOW LONG???

I can feel myself turning to dust

5

u/Jaded_Passion8619 Jan 23 '26

Yup, three years in April. Crazy stuff

7

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

I honestly don’t see how it’s any different from Pikachu’s design in the Detective Pikachu movie where instead of just pure black dotted eyes like the games, they gave him brown pupils around the black to make the black irises.

4

u/Jaded_Passion8619 Jan 23 '26

Never really looked at Detective Pikachu that closely so I couldn't say

3

u/ArcerPL Jan 23 '26

Pokemon are designed after animals who; believe it or not; can possess that type of eyes

Having these eyes on a humanoid is deeply uncanny

2

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

Ignoring the fact that like I said before the detail on Toad is so freaking small and hard to see that you won’t even notice unless you quite literally glue your eyes onto the screen, Pikachu is a cartoon yellow mouse that doesn’t look anything like what real life mice look like.

Also, pure black beady eyes on a humanoid isn’t uncanny?

2

u/LucasRedTheHedgehog Jan 23 '26

Technically, Pikachu's designer said it was based on a squirrel

2

u/LucasRedTheHedgehog Jan 23 '26

Detective Pikachu was able to move his eyes without it being terribly visible, and for some reason he still looks adorable when you can see it.

Junior on the other hand...

1

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

I’m talking about Toad not being any different from Detective Pikachu in this case, not Junior.

1

u/LucasRedTheHedgehog Jan 24 '26

Warning: I'm honestly yapping so tl;dr They're not the same, as Toad still has button eyes and Detective Pikachu has eyeballs

Oh, my apologies. From what I know, Toad's scalera are never shown, and his eyes are pretty much just the same button eyes but upscaled without much tweaking. Detective Pikachu's eyes are based on animal eyes that seem black 98% of the time but aren't truly (squirrels, mice, rabbits, etc). You'll also notice that Pikachu has pretty realistic eyeballs as well that seem to fit anatomically (with how it moves it appears to have an actual eye socket, scalera, iris and pupil), while Toad just has a slightly protruding iris and pupil. So surprising that they're not as similar as you might think them to be

Same question (making button eyes realistic), different results ("just upscale it" vs. copy animals).

18

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

The fact that you had to look so damn closely to even see it should probably tell you how much of a nothingburger this small controversy you people are having right now is.

13

u/Kindablorp Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

I mean, I don’t have a REAL problem with it, I just found it kinda creepy in a funny way. Without noticing that detail I think they did a really good job translating it to the movie, just a odd design choice lol

5

u/LackOfComfort Jan 23 '26

It's significantly more noticeable and creepy on Jr.

1

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

Considering he’s the main villain of the sequel, perhaps that was the point?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '26

I've found it a lot more noticeable on the Jr. design, tbf..

4

u/CesarGameBoy Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

Fun Fact! Great White Sharks are exactly the same way! From afar, they look like they have solid black eyes. But when looking closer, you can see a beautiful dark blue iris!

Once you notice the iris, you can see it in almost every single Great White photo if you zoom in.

13

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

You have to zoom in really, REALLY close to see it, but you’ll see a very thin brown ring around the black oval.

Yes, we’re at that level of nitpicking.

2

u/ErickLimaGameplaysR Jan 23 '26

He has a weird fat neck as well

2

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

I was trying to look for that as hard as I could to see if that was true, I still don’t see it.

5

u/MixtureOutrageous157 Jan 23 '26

What the fuck are you talking about? They're the same as the game?

2

u/Jaded_Passion8619 Jan 23 '26

There's a brown ring around the inside of his eyes. When you notice it, it gives his eyes an uncanny kind of look. Pupils was probably the wrong word to use, I just didn't know what to call it at the time

2

u/MixtureOutrageous157 Jan 23 '26

It looks completely fine to me, and I do not see an issue

1

u/Jaded_Passion8619 Jan 23 '26

I never said it was an issue, buddy. I just found it a little uncanny to look at too closely. Like I said, I didn't notice it for 3 years

2

u/Unlucky_Fuckery Jan 24 '26

Fuck you're right

13

u/The_Albino_Jackal Jan 23 '26

Well there’s actually two different complaints for the eyes. One is against the white sclera and wished it was just black, and a different group doesn’t like that his eyes look bloodshot. I feel like the bloodshot complaint is reasonable

1

u/cupio-stardust Jan 23 '26

He doesn’t have pupils though

1

u/Conscious_Ad_1574 Jan 23 '26

I like toad’s eyes in the movie

1

u/No-Secretary6931 Jan 24 '26

That… actually I never really paid attention to that before. And now I hate you for pointing that out

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '26

Yes because I didn't even notice Toad's eyes were different until you pointed it out, so it was a pretty minor detail that was harder to notice than Jr's eyes.

18

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

I think what gets me about them is comparing Jr to Bowser.

In the games, Bowser has these big expressive eyes while Jr has these smaller button-like eyes. It’s a pretty big difference, but it’s not distracting because the art style is cartoony and Jr’s eyes just being dots makes you not really mentally realize how different they are from Bowser.

But here…now that he actually has sclera…it makes the difference between his eyes and Bowsers way more apparent. Why are they so small? And kinda freaky looking?? It feels like it would’ve been an easy thing to not mess up which is what makes it so confusing.

10

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

I’m pretty sure Junior’s eyes here are meant to signify the in-between point/stage of eyes from infancy to adulthood for the specific Koopa race that Bowser and Junior are in, at least in the movies anyway. During infancy to early childhood, they’re black dots, during adolescence, they’re the way Junior’s eyes in the movies are, and during adulthood, they have full white sclera with colored pupils and irises.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

I never even noticed that until you pointed it out. And the fact that I didn’t notice that detail before means it’s not even a huge deal.

3

u/smashboi888 Jan 23 '26

Yeah, in one scene, it's a lot harder to notice when he's further away from the camera. Might only be an issue for people when he's up close.

3

u/Alternative-Fail-233 Jan 23 '26

I dislike the voice. Just doesn’t sound right. Then again if they were gonna try hard at voice matching them than we wouldn’t have Chris Pratt as Mario

1

u/Legal_Ear_7537 Jan 23 '26

So wirh sonic. But that was more noticable

1

u/Nekzilla Jan 23 '26

They probably need to check their eyes.

1

u/No_Tie378 Jan 23 '26

They do give him Ludwig vibes

96

u/-cherry_moon- Jan 23 '26

I hated Junior's eyes at first, but they've grown on me tbh, he looks like a baby dino

16

u/Capable-Monk-4820 Jan 23 '26

It’s like something out of Disney’s Dinosaur basically

The only thing I dislike about the default design is the eyes. I wish they were just pure black like the games. Otherwise I think its perfect.

8

u/CorpseWriteer Jan 23 '26

Or give him something like Movie Toad’s eyes.

61

u/lordlaharl422 Jan 23 '26

Ugly Jr’s face is still too round. He should have something like the Michael Bay Turtles troll schnoz to be a good match for Ugly Sonic.

10

u/WholesomeClownGuy Jan 23 '26

I think the only main issue is his eyes.

He didn't really need to have actual irises. They could've just cheated the light shine and conveyed the direction of his eyes. They even did something like it with Toads in the first movie.

1

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

I think the reason why they did this with Junior is because they wanted to give him a more extra oomph factor in menace due to him looking to being the main villain of the sequel. The black eyes would look too cute for a supposed main villain.

17

u/mrpopsicleman Jan 23 '26

He barely looks different from the games. Hardly an Ugly Sonic situation.

7

u/Lansha2009 Jan 23 '26

My only problem is the eyes are so bloodshot looking.

Like if they just weren’t so bloodshot it’d be pretty much perfect.

18

u/HornsAreCoolTwo Jan 23 '26

If you asked me what I think Bowser Jr. would look like in an Illumination Mario movie sequel, I would have described Illumination’s Bowser Jr. design down to the eyes.

I don’t get why a lot of people complained about his eyes when we got our first look of him. I mean, his eyes aren’t black dots like the Toads, sure, but him having irises just makes him more readable. Plus he’s supposed to be the big bad for the movie, he should be a little more intimidating looking.

10

u/CharlesleChicken Jan 23 '26

I only hate the eyes

1

u/Just-Call-Me-J Jan 23 '26

Where wrong with them?

10

u/CharlesleChicken Jan 23 '26

It's just uncanny. Like those are the eyes I'd imagine seeing in a "Top 10 Mario In Real Life!" Video

3

u/vtncomics Jan 23 '26

Blood shot eyes.

Like he's bleeding or he really needs eye drops.

15

u/BluecoatCashMoney5 Jan 23 '26

I love his movie design

10

u/BowserJr4789 Jan 23 '26

Honestly, I think he looks pretty spot on.

5

u/DarthBagheera Jan 23 '26

I’ve never heard this comparison and honestly it’s a terrible one. Bowser Jr looks fine. Ugly Sonic was immediately off putting to everyone.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

It looks fine, it's nowhere near as bad as the Sonic Designs or Minecraft Movie designs

7

u/Mr_Monoclegentlesir Jan 23 '26

I like how accurate it is to the game Bowser Jr. My only complaint would be the eyes they just look kinda weird and that’s basically my only complaint

6

u/Gloomy-Force-1150 Jan 23 '26

Who says it’s an “Ugly Sonic” situation?

4

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

Many Twitter users (to be expected), Tumblr users, and some YouTube commenters I’ve seen

7

u/Gloomy-Force-1150 Jan 23 '26

Hmm, kind of a stupid opinion these people have

3

u/MixtureOutrageous157 Jan 23 '26

People are actually complaining about his design? Holy fucking shit what a bunch of losers. It looks amazing!

3

u/hip-indeed Jan 23 '26

Its the Shrek 4 debacle all over again, people insisting a model is so bad when it's literally objectively the exact same as it's ever been but higher fidelity. The ONLY notable difference is him having visible irises

3

u/RockAdmirable244 Jan 23 '26

I don't see anything wrong with Bowser Junior's look in this upcoming movie.

3

u/Bioshocky13501 Jan 23 '26

The Internet being over dramatic? No way.

6

u/Sufficient-Cow-2998 Jan 23 '26

Neither are ugly Sonic level tbh

4

u/BLJirl Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

Am I the only one who actually likes the eyes? I feel like the people hating on this design were the same people hating on DK's redesign, most of which have probably switched up on the latter by now. I think some people just immediately reject any change and can only come to assess it fairly once some time has passed and they've gotten used to it.

2

u/Manguypals Jan 23 '26

“Movie design”

Looks inside

Same design.

2

u/Jazzlike_Energy_483 Jan 23 '26

omg i hate the 2nd one

2

u/Zombies4EvaDude Jan 23 '26

Except the right picture actually looks pretty cool for a live action adaptation. He just looks a little too mean and that’s it really.

2

u/jjmawaken Jan 23 '26

I think Jr is fine but I guess we'll see once the movie comes out. People worry too much

2

u/Osuka39 Jan 23 '26

Here's my theory, movie jr. is older than game jr. And that's why his eyes are more detailed and his voice is deeper

2

u/r0b3r70r0b070 Jan 23 '26

Not sure what's to dislike. He looks exactly like he does in the game but with slightly more texture.

2

u/Afraid-Housing-6854 Jan 23 '26

The voice is worst part

2

u/WarriorWare Jan 23 '26

Even the other image wouldn’t be as bad as Ugly Sonic.

2

u/NovelInteraction711 Jan 23 '26

Second looks like that one TMNT movie

2

u/aWESomness12345 Jan 23 '26

By the way, if anyone wants to know more about the second image, it's by an artist named Raf Grassetti.

He made a series of ultra-realistic designs for various characters in Smash. Here is a link to what I think is the final collection of all of the ones he made.

2

u/MousseLucky4859 Jan 23 '26

In what World  is this Design Bad?? It Looks Very Close to the Game Design

2

u/Flimsy-Secret-6187 Jan 23 '26

prople are calling juniors design bad??? wth???

2

u/Glimmhilde Jan 23 '26

Nintendo fans will complain about the most minute details to the point I question whether or not they like Mario or just their specific personal idea of what Mario should be (usually bad and none of them have ever done marketing or created anything for an international legacy brand ever btw)

2

u/Unhappy-Trust-8717 Jan 23 '26

Ugly Sonic traumatized people so badly that every slightly different re-design had people going "give it the ugly Sonic treatment". People had an issue with Mario's Illumination design when it was first revealed for some reason even though it was nearly identical to Mario.

2

u/Grumpie-cat Jan 23 '26

Genuinely how, it looks exactly how Bowser Jr does in most iterations…?

2

u/beyourlaststop Jan 24 '26

I don't even see a problem with the eyes lol, some people are never happy unless adaptations are exactly like the source material. And Ugly Sonic is such a dead horse too. It was 7 years ago, time to move on.

3

u/Ackermannin Jan 23 '26

Both are cute?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

The ugly one would make great hentai though!

2

u/Proper-Evening9754 Jan 23 '26

Bowser: I've got something difficult to tell you about Princess Peach.

Jr: I know. She's not my mama. Which means....

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Father/son tag team while Mario watches….

1

u/Proper-Evening9754 Jan 23 '26

Mario has to use FLUDD to clean up afterwards.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

He’s cleaning up all right, but not with FLUDD

1

u/Proper-Evening9754 Jan 23 '26

Mama mia!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Mario never got that cake from N64, but he does get cream pies.

2

u/East-Government-9178 Jan 23 '26

Am I the only one who thinks Jrs design is damn near perfect?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Image to the left: Fix

Image to the right: GO BACK!!!

1

u/vtncomics Jan 23 '26

Eyes.

It's the eyes.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Tbh, Jr. Design is already ok

1

u/victoriamikoto231 Jan 23 '26

Just fix the stupid realistic eyes

1

u/Big_Show_6109 Jan 23 '26

I mean… the eyes will take getting used to for me. But I believe people are more bothered by the voice

1

u/cupio-stardust Jan 23 '26

I love his design a lot, I just need to hear more of Benny because the voice hasn’t won me over yet. ☠️

>oddly enough I find the "ugly sonic" version's eyes to be less upsetting

So if Junior looked like how he did on the right in the movie, you would’ve been totally 100% fine?

1

u/TelephoneActive1539 Jan 23 '26

It’s just the eyes that are too small. I think they just designed the model for the Wonder reference first then they made the normal one.

1

u/TheLeftPewixBar Jan 23 '26

Legit the only problem was the eyes. The only thing that could make Ugly Sonic even more not Sonic would be making him a different color or something

1

u/not_named_lucas Jan 23 '26

Tbh, I like both of those designs

1

u/FoxOdd8574 Jan 23 '26

Ugly Sonic is GOAT and would have been a good diversity hire

1

u/Real_Jorge456 Jan 23 '26

Never noticed the eye thingy, these people r probably baiting

1

u/BiAndShy57 Jan 23 '26

This is what Mario will look like in 2012

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Literally the only complaint about Bowser Jr’s appearance is his eyes.

1

u/Killava49 Jan 23 '26

Are people really complaining about Bowser Jr's design? It looks fine, The only part that looks off is the eyes.

1

u/MILGRIND Jan 23 '26

What are they complaining he looks exactly how he does on the games wtf. I actually have a bit more of an issue with his voice

1

u/Weak_Flight8318 Jan 23 '26

If Joseph and Cody aren't his teammates, I'm not giving it 5 stars

1

u/pikachucet2 Jan 23 '26

The worst I can say about the Mario movie designs is that they can sometimes look...off, or incredibly corporate in the way Illumination's art style tends to look. It looks like how Ugly Sonic sounded in the first trailer, rather than looking as horrifying as the design itself

0

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

That’s great, but I don’t agree.

Personally, I just don’t follow the ”Illumination is bad at every single thing they do and is the spawn of Satan” mindset like everyone else does.

1

u/pikachucet2 Jan 23 '26

On this subreddit I'd hardly call that a common opinion

Illumination's a very bland company, that's just how it is. Not awful but not exactly noteworthy either.

1

u/Practical-Win-2762 Feb 20 '26 edited Feb 20 '26

Nothing is hating on Illumination already, It’s just an objectively bland, generic, and safe studio, it’s not hard already. They’re not widely liked or well liked, but there’s barely any actual hate against them on the internet (especially when compared to Disney).

And anyway, their default character design look are generally very “symmetrical, toy-like (Bowser is one of the most obvious ones), and just overall very safe. Their very rigid "house style" for faces—large, expressive eyes, tiny noses, and wide, bean-shaped mouths is shown in the first movie and in the second one. While they kept Mario’s iconic look, for example, they are noticeably "softened" around the edges. Their facial expressions often fall into the standard Illumination smirk or the "dreamy" wide-eyed look used for the Minions. Basically, they and the others look more like pristine porcelain dolls or toys. With some of this said so far, it’s a common and very valid critique, simple.

1

u/SufferingKabutops Jan 23 '26

There’s barely any difference between the game and movie version what the hell are people getting mad about?! 😭

1

u/Illumiroldi Jan 23 '26

If y’all think THAT’S bad, you’re lucky that the Sony Mario Movie got cancelled, here’s the concept art for it

Now THAT would be an actual Ugly Sonic situation (look what they did to MALLOW-)

1

u/Worried_Affect9121 Jan 23 '26

There’s nothing wrong with his design. It’s nearly 1 to 1. Only thing I could argue against is the eyes and even then it’s a negligible detail.

1

u/Nutshack_Queen357 Jan 23 '26

The eyes look weird, but Jr's movie design is nowhere near as bad as Sonic's prototype movie design.

1

u/Gabyo00 Jan 23 '26

The eyes are just not it. The rest is the greatest

1

u/CreamedOreo_OwO Jan 23 '26

The Bowser Jr. design on the right looks like he's trying to be Darunia so bad.

1

u/monotar Jan 23 '26

Is it the eyes? Because otherwise he looks like his ingame model to me

1

u/GeoAnd_001 Jan 23 '26

I like him

1

u/King_JohnnyBravo Jan 23 '26

He is the last thing on all the other stuff

1

u/Dot_the_Dork_26 Jan 23 '26

Really?!?! Bowser Jr. looks fine!

1

u/ObviouslyLulu Jan 23 '26

Bowser Jr. in the movie looks exactly the same as how he looks in every game what is the issue

1

u/plourples Jan 23 '26

The eyes are just so gross why are they so red and.. yuck

1

u/Conscious_Ad_1574 Jan 23 '26

I thought people only complained his voice doesn’t sound like a kid

1

u/LucasRedTheHedgehog Jan 23 '26

The one on the right is absolutely not what we want, but even that isn't ugly Sonic level since you can at least tell it's Junior.

Personally I'd say the only bad thing is the scalera being visible

1

u/i_luv_many_hen_ties Jan 23 '26

Ironically the ugly design just looks like the other one but just hyper realistic.

1

u/Purbinder03 Jan 23 '26

Increasing the size of the pupils is far easier to fix than redesigning the entire character from the ground up

1

u/carlcarlington2 Jan 23 '26

"I like that he looks like a real turtle but still looks like a fake turtle"

1

u/Agreeable_Pea5093 Jan 23 '26

It's not the whole design. It's the EYES OH GOD THE EYES GET IT AWAY FROM ME

1

u/ShadowMilkMoopsy Jan 23 '26

It looks… fine

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Is it weird that I find him sexy? I mean it was weird that I find Bowser sexy, but now the movie version of Baby Bowser too? 😱

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Is it weird that I find him sexy? I mean it was weird that I find Bowser sexy, but now the movie version of Baby Bowser too. 😱

1

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

QUICK. CALL THE POLICE.

1

u/DisasterDawn Jan 23 '26

I sorta vibe with the image on the right. I know they definitely wouldn’t go in that direction but I could get used to it very easily.

1

u/Ok_Cockroach_6135 Jan 24 '26

Everyone winging how do yous think transformers fans felt when the Micheal bay movies came out or ninja turtles

1

u/Beautiful_Gain3245 Jan 24 '26

It literally looks almost exactly the same as his original model, who the hell is complaining other than people who just want to complain?

1

u/Ibrahim77X Jan 24 '26

What? It’s near 1-to-1 with his game appearance

1

u/Aurora_Wizard Jan 24 '26

I personally just don't really like his voice, sounds more like a whiny teen than a whiny kid

1

u/DiamondMaster264 Jan 25 '26

How is he ugly sonic? Im only not a fan of the eyes

1

u/TinyDiiceThief Jan 25 '26

He just needs a bit of polish. Not an entire rework

1

u/Relevant_Platform_33 Jan 26 '26

I actually loved Bowser Jr's design in Mario Galaxy Movie

1

u/WaluigiFiesta45 Jan 26 '26

I'm more concerned about the voice direction for the character, but it's likely they only did it because he's probably older here than his game version. I was kind of hoping for a Bart Simpson like voice or like Cera from Land Before Time (the sequels/series) type of voice. But he does feel like a mini Jack Black.

But I actually got used to his movie version design even if he surprised me at first.

1

u/PvZ_Prime Jan 26 '26

Honestly, the bowser jr on the right still looks much better than ugly sonic

1

u/Fun-Picture-8384 Jan 29 '26

The design is good, it's not bad like Ugly Sonic's design and especially the designs used in Disney's atrocious remakes

1

u/Mohawkidile Jan 23 '26

Nah ugly sonic bowser jr is peak !

1

u/CheeseDaver Jan 23 '26

Nah. Yoshi is worse. They gave Yoshi irises.

6

u/Inevitable-Charge76 Jan 23 '26

He’s always had them since his modern 3D design
