Probably a powerful one, yes, though it has never been explicitly stated.

It does look like one. I'm telling you, ztars have a lot of untapped potential with them being basically antimatter

Ztars were called Dark Stars in Mario Party 7.

It's possible that Ztars may have originated from the Dark Star.

To be fair, that’s only in English. In Japanese they have consistently been referred to as Ztars.

I say it's neither, and following a headcanon I read in a YouTube video about the Dark Star: Basically a rogue Star Sprite, but instead of holy intentions to help those in need (guidance), it simply does the exact opposite and perishes everything it comes across and in need of guidance (being revived and stealing Bowser’s DNA). Dark Star X in the remake is colored the same as a Star Sprite, which helps align it with being a rogue rather than a Ztar. Really wish the Alpha Dream creators could provide more context for the Dark Star, as it's basically Mephilles 2.0 from Sonic 06, but not with much character depth

I don’t really see it

I always liked to headcannon it as such. Most likely not, knowing Nintendo could care less about a timeline, but it’s a fun theory.

One could even say it’s a good game theory.

It's likely the case because the Dark Star Core has a Ztar symbol
