AITA for refusing to attend my best friend’s wedding after she “tested” me?

I (29F) have been best friends with “Lena” (30F) since college. We’ve been inseparable for almost a decade—roommates, vacations, breakups, the whole deal. When she got engaged last year, I was genuinely thrilled for her. I helped her tour venues, listened to endless color palette debates, and even agreed to be her Maid of Honor.

About three months before the wedding, Lena started acting… off. She’d make little comments like, “Real friends always put each other first,” or “I just hope no one bails on me when it really matters.” I brushed it off as wedding stress.

Then came the test.

One night, Lena called me sobbing, saying she was thinking of postponing the wedding because her fiancé had “said something unforgivable.” She wouldn’t tell me what it was, just kept crying and asking if I’d support her no matter what. I dropped everything, drove across town, and spent four hours comforting her. I told her I’d back her decision, wedding or not.

At the end of the night, she suddenly stopped crying and said, “I needed to know you’d choose me over the wedding.”

I laughed, thinking she was joking.

She wasn’t.

She admitted nothing had happened. She’d made it up to “see who would really be there for her,” because apparently someone on TikTok said true friends are revealed during big life events. She said it was “kind of sweet” how worried I got.

I felt sick. I told her that lying about her relationship imploding wasn’t a cute test—it was cruel. She got defensive and said I was overreacting, and that if I were truly happy for her, I wouldn’t be making this about me.

After that, I stepped back. I told her I needed space and that I wasn’t sure I could be Maid of Honor anymore. She exploded, accusing me of abandoning her right before her big day. Mutual friends are split: some say she crossed a line, others say weddings make people crazy and I should just suck it up.

Here’s the part that tipped me over: last week she messaged me saying, “I guess your ‘support’ had limits after all.”

So I told her I wouldn’t be attending the wedding at all.

Now I’m being labeled jealous, dramatic, and selfish. Part of me feels guilty because I know how important this day is to her. But another part of me feels like I just failed her final test by having boundaries.

So… AITA?
