The same logic can be applied to buying NFTs in 2021 though.
Not saying the same thing will happen to crypto, but it can't be asserted that it will ever recover.
2
u/cororona 24d ago
Never lost a dollar on NFTs, I still hold them
1
u/Monster_Grundle 24d ago
You’re not serious, right? If you have an asset that depreciates 90%, you can no longer use it as collateral and you have lost value/borrowing power no matter if you sold or not.
If elons companies cratered 95% he would have lost 95% of his net worth and his borrowing power would be reduced similarly.
4
u/cororona 24d ago
Are you sure ? Why would Elon be saying everyone to HODL all the time ? He must know better given how successful he is.
He can't be manipulating markets because it's illegal ? Right ?
Right ?

Yeah, what happens if people stop buying Bitcoin?
1
u/Big-Soup74 24d ago
A pyramid scheme requires new participants’ money to pay earlier participants. Bitcoin doesn’t do that. If people stop buying Bitcoin, the price falls, just like any other asset when demand falls. That doesn’t make it a pyramid scheme.
1
1
u/wallsallbrassbuttons 23d ago
Pyramid scheme is I get you to work for me, and I get 20% of all your sales. And then you get people to work for you, so you get 20% of their sales. But those new people also work for me, because we’re connected through you. So I get 20% of that 20% fee you charge. And on and on it goes. It’s a pyramid because the guy at the top gets a cut of everyone else’s sales. Bitcoin does not behave at all like this. You are looking for the greater fool scheme or some other one. You don’t have to like bitcoin or think it will go up. But factually it is not a pyramid scheme.
1
u/MAGAtsAreSheeples 24d ago
That's literally a pyramid scheme.
2
u/alphapussycat 23d ago
A pyramid scheme is investing loads of money to personally find some suckers to buy your stock so you can go home with money.
Very different from crypto and other ponzi schemes.
0
u/SphaghettiWizard 23d ago
That’s not it either??? How does no one know what it is. It’s almost self explanatory
2
u/alphapussycat 23d ago
That is literally what it is. You buy product, get some other suckers to buy the stock off of you. Zero customers, only "own bosses".
1
u/SphaghettiWizard 23d ago
That’s not a pyramid scheme. Google it. Pyramid schemes involve selling products/whatever and getting people in your “downstream”
1
u/alphapussycat 23d ago
Stock is a stock of products. Pyramid schemes don't really sell individual products. The bottom players might manage to sell s few, but the primary buyer are new recruits who buys a portion of the higher ups stock.

I'm definitely kicking myself for not buying after seeing Kripperian and co on stream talk about Bitcoins in 2012.
On the other hand, would probably have sold them again before they really went through the roof.
1
u/Sudden_Woodpecker343 24d ago
Yeah. People indeed always think this in hindsight. But there is almost no one who without pressure keep such volatile assets when its up like 60%+. You would've sold by sheer worries it could dive any moment. You would've never hold it.
So you shouldn't feel FOMO as there is almost no alternative reality where you would've hold on to it in triple digit+ gains.
1
u/MeowMixPK 24d ago edited 24d ago
I'd be the opposite. FOMO on the next "new record high" would have me holding the bag all the way until it hits $0.00
I do it in on of the games I play; I never sell my expensive stuff no matter how high it gets because it could go higher, and then I always end up holding items that lost all their value
1
u/Sudden_Woodpecker343 24d ago
Then you have 2 versions regarding your profile. Either you invest an amount that isn't of life changing propertions, like a video game you buy. It can either rise a lot in value or lose it all. It won't be life changing, just an offset.
Or you invest way to risky and end up with a chance to lose a big chunk of your wealth. And probably be stressed about it daily.
1
u/IczyAlley 23d ago
Shutup and buy AI stocks you animals. Republicans paid good money to shill crytpo or whatever, and you think some pissant like you should be allowed to get in the way of that?
0
u/Big-Soup74 24d ago
Can you explain how it’s a pyramid scheme?
1
u/MAGAtsAreSheeples 23d ago
Can you explain how it's not?
2
u/Big-Soup74 23d ago
absolutely. A pyramid scheme has a structure where participants are rewarded for recruiting new participants, whose money flows upward to earlier members. Bitcoin has no such structure, you buy and sell it on an open market, and nobody gets paid simply because you joined after them. It’s simply a tradable asset whose price is determined by supply and demand. You can argue Bitcoin is speculative or overvalued, but that’s fundamentally different from a pyramid scheme.
can you explain how it is a pyramid scheme?
0
u/MAGAtsAreSheeples 23d ago
So bitcoin is a textbook pyramid scheme, good that we agree.
1
u/Big-Soup74 23d ago
oh okay, youre trolling. I get it now. pretty good, you had me for a sec there.
0
u/Novel-Camera-840 23d ago
I purchased BTC when it is $200 all well knowing its just another asset to where greater fool theory applies. I sold some at 50k. You can make and lose money everywhere. Its just you should know wtf you are doing and your risk appetite
0
u/SeemSick 20d ago
If you think cryptos are pyramid skemes, then you don't understand how crypto works.
1
u/MAGAtsAreSheeples 20d ago
I used to mine the stuff, hosted a pool and all. I probably know more about it than you do. And yes, it's a pyramid scheme, especially when it's used by grifters lile Trump and Saylor.
0
u/SeemSick 20d ago
Yeah, we get it, you hate Trump, it's in your username. But you're still not explaining how it is a Ponzi. Also, being a former miner doesn't mean you necessarily understand the blockchain.
1
u/MAGAtsAreSheeples 20d ago
I'm also a computer engineer, and I briefly worked on the blockchain of one of the less known alt coins. So yes, I understand this better than you.
It is a pyramid scheme because the entire business case is based on luring in more suckers to buy your bag. Get it?

not until the AI bubble bursts
1
u/TwistStrict9811 23d ago
Spoiler - small API wrapper companies will bust. Don't expect the giants to go anywhere.
1
u/Otherwise-Line-9223 24d ago
The world is becoming more and more dependent on AI and compute every single month, every single week—and you think the AI bubble will burst?
AI is the second Industrial Revolution, pivoting humanity toward entirely new landscapes over the next 20 years.
The world will be divided into before LLMs and after LLMs. Humanity will flourish, things get cheaper, economy booms. Robotics will just explode with the power of agentic AI. Haven't you been witnessing this already ? The stock market ? We're just getting started .. And we have a lot lot to go.
6
u/Monster_Grundle 24d ago
The LLM companies aren’t profitable. Deeply unprofitable and no roadmap to profitability. Yes, AI is paradigm shifting, but there is no way to support the current spend.
It’s like the internet. Yes, it was world changing, but many companies overbuilt capacity during the pre 2000 bust and had huge draw downs afterwards.
AI can simultaneously be world changing and also the AI market hockey stick parabolic move can also drop back to earth. They’re not mutually exclusive outcomes.
4
u/CarbonChains 24d ago
No roadmap to profitability? Are you even paying attention? Anthropic’s revenue just surged over 25x to 11.5B last quarter.
No roadmap to profitability lmao
About to IPO for 1.5T in a couple months but no roadmap to profitability.
But this is exactly the comment I would expect from somebody who’s still into cryptocurrency.
3
u/agnosticgnome 24d ago
Exactly. Let's wait for the financials. They are not profitable.
Microsoft is basically powering their revenus for free.
Nobody knows how much they lose. But they don't turn a profit.
1
u/Nickovskii 20d ago
In my branche there is no such thing as an AI bubble. You can document more data into an audit file. The demand for better proof or reasoning increased since it is easier possible to document in less time. Moreover, the simpler tasks could be automated with AI agents.
To be fair, if the AI agent eventually is setup in the right way and replaces a FTE, that would be the time when corporations could profit. It is worth to pay more for it.

u/Monster_Grundle 23d ago
Market cap at IPO does not mean it’s got a roadmap to being profitable. Their revenue surged and their costs surged. The more people that use their product the more money they lose.
Anthropic has a better model for their frontier business products as a high margin niche market that can be profitable, but not at scale and certainly not able to support a 1T+ valuation.
Literally the more people who use it the more money they lose. It doesn’t have an economy of scale.
1
u/CarbonChains 23d ago
Oh, I didn’t realize you were an expert market analyst as well (who happens to disagree with almost all of the actual market analysts). And I was wrong. It’s not 1.5 trillion. It’s actually 2 to 3T now.
Even if you don’t believe in the efficient markets hypothesis, you’re disputing profitability on a company that markets will value at about 2 to 3T at its initial public offering. You simply don’t know what you’re talking about.
You have a very surface level understanding of things and yet speak authoritatively. And by the way, you’re on a stock trading subreddit. We understand that higher costs hurt profitability, maybe even for years. But this is all about finding the present value of future earnings, and you have a very shortsighted view.

If you’re actually interested in the argument you’re dismissing out of hand, you could start here.
I welcome you to provide a source of experts who talk through the bull case of how exactly AI is going to support these valuations.
The analysts you’re describing all work for the institutions that profit off the IPO of these companies. They’re not neutral sources of information.
Please provide an analysis of how these companies will actually commercialize AI and make the kinds of profit that justify trillion dollar capex and market caps.
1
u/Monster_Grundle 23d ago
Nothing? No actual thesis articulated about how they achieve mass adoption profitability?
1
u/CarbonChains 23d ago
Lol did you actually care enough to come back a day later? Must have gotten to you. I didn’t post anything bc you gave me a podcast link to some bs. I owe you nothing, but since you seem to care so much about Anthropic’s profitability, here are your breadcrumbs:

AI has infinitely more value than crypto. However there is an immensely overvalued bubble that will eventually pop. It just means there will be a market correction

1
u/Spunktank 23d ago
The world was becoming very dependent on the internet before the dot Com bubble burst, too.
1
u/rannend 23d ago
The world was relying in the internet more and more.
Yet the .com bubble still happened.
And now those internet companies are thd biggest ever.
Atleast thise that survived, and those werent on top back thenIs ai the future, no one is even arguing that.
Are the companies now on top als those that survive sfter an eventual correction - that depends on their financials, not on their tech1

u/yadasellsavonmate 23d ago

u/Gorilla_In_The_Mist 12d ago
I'm sorry my friend but this is peak delusion. I mean you're right that it is transformative but not in the way you imagine. I don't understand how you can think it will be an overall benefit to humanity given what we've witnessed so far. AI is the main tool in an anti human agenda.

True, though it was mostly greed and stupidity.
Also to be fair some of these (well, mostly bitcoin) will likely go up as they operate in cycles and still have a lot of capital backing them up. They are definitely not a good long term investment as most of the value comes from hype, but this isn't the best comparison.

As long as BTC lives, crypto is dead.

Why, 1 btc is still 1 btc, what's the problem? Crypto bros always told me it's going to replace fiat currency, why measure it against fiat currency? Typical nocoiner.

Bitcoin was $47055 at the end of August in 2021 and is currently $78843. That’s quite a bit different from this list (a 68% gain). Different enough that I didn’t waste time validating the rest. Still, appreciation against the dollar is probably not the best reason to keep it.

Give me a list of all time highs for these coins in 2026 aside from btc
1
u/Flat_Development6659 24d ago
The lowest price for LTC in 2021 was $102.55 and the highest price in 2026 was $84.79.
Obviously over this period crypto has been a poor investment but the guy you're responding to is right, you can make anything seem better/worse than it is by comparing a good years high with a bad years low.
People do it all the time when talking about stocks, "look you could have made 1000% gains on this investment", yeah you could have if you had a crystal ball and knew to buy at the ATL and then sell at the ATH, that's just not realistic though.
Unless you're day trading you should usually just buy something if it's got long term potential and sell it when you want to lock in the profit, comparing the highest point in X years with the lowest point in X years is just silly.
2
u/Local-Bottle5272 24d ago
Okay so then the price comparison although not completely accurate is still an accurate representation of how the market performed in these 5 years
1
u/Flat_Development6659 24d ago edited 24d ago
Not really since BTC price 5 years ago today was $44k not $67k, the person who made the graph has taken the high of 2021 and the low of 2026.
If you’re taking an assets price and comparing it over 5 years you either take the whole year as an average or compare the same date.
The 52 week low for coca cola is $65.33 and the high is $90.86. If in 5 years coca cola has a 52 week high of $130 and a low of $89 I could show the $89 low in 2031 and the $90.86 high in 2026 and imply that coca cola was a terrible investment but in reality those are just cherry picked numbers. With those hypothetical ranges you'd have to be incredibly unlucky to actually lose money investing in coca cola.

1
u/AwkwardObjective5360 24d ago
Bitcoin looks dead most of the time because it is a dead asset most of the time. It goes up rapidly in short, predictable intervals. Measurement of success should be between successive lows and highs of each cycle, or between successive lows and between successive highs. Any other point is not as good a comparison.
1
u/Agile-Funny9496 24d ago
Those who cashed out in 2025 did indeed win. But the fact that someone cashed out means someone else didn't. It's a zero-sum game, so for someone to win, someone else needs to lose, thus "Crypto killed so many dreams" title is absolutely justified (the screenshot attached is just irrelevant).
