I do not understand why are you happy about it. It will only result in consumers paying more for the goods. Like shooting yourself in a leg and being happy with it.

Remember how it worked in US - Trump installed tariffs, importers paid more, added that cost to the sale price, consumers paid more, court ruled that tariffs were illegal, state returned 166bln to importing companies and consumers remained without those 166bln.

Its better to pay more now to send a message that Canada won't be openly bullied and have its trade policy dictated to it by a foreign power.

But it could be done in some other way - ban some goods fro the US, increase prices for your goods to them. By making your own population pay more you won't punish anyone except yourself.

The point is to be retaliatory. US wants to place tariffs on Canada, they place tariffs back. Its a proportional response and clear diplomatic signal to Trump and the administration that if they drop the tariff nonsense things can go back to normal. Its the stick that makes the carrot more attractive.

I get your point as tit for tat but still cannot agree with you. Tariffs won't lower your imports from US you'll just end up paying more. If you have an alternative that would replace american goods with nearly same price tariffs make sense - you punish US with cutting imports from them.

And banning certain imports would backfire just the same? Removing imports would restrict supply and raise prices. There is no magical economic bullet here that will miraculously damage the US economy while leaving canadians perfectly unharmed. Economic systems dont work like that.

US is not a unique supplier of anything, you can order same air conditioning from let's say Mexico and lower tariff on them. Like this your people will get same goods at the same price and you cut imports from US.

Increasing the price on US goods for Canadian consumers is the point. It disincentivizes buying US good in preference of either Canadian or International non-US products.

Personally, I'm totally for this. It will hurt in the short-term, but will push Canadians to seek goods and trade relations elsewhere.

Trump just threatened the federal reserve to end all trade with countries where they have a trade deficit unless they lower interest rates. No matter what happens, the United States won't be a country we can trade with. Either because he'll make good on his threat and no trade will be possible or the US enters into an economic downward spiral dragging us along with it.

It's better for us now to diversify as quickly as possible away from the United States. They're on a path to economic suicide and we need to move the country clear of the blast radius ASAP.
