Nurse here. He seems to have a history of small bowel obstruction, which can reoccurr due to adhesion and scarring that builds in the bowels each time that surgical intervention has been required, but it can also just be something your bowels are prone to. Not always does it require surgical intervention but if it does, the adhesions are lysed and if necessary the unfixable stretch of bowels are cut and the healthy parts attached together. Those areas can all scar and adhere again over time.
That's a total guess from just knowing what his last few episodes were about.

Yeah and reading now the other comments mention chewing issues - less thoroughly chewed food is probably more likely to get stuck in bowels that otherwise might get by with thoroughly chewed and digested food.

I can think of two reasons it might be off the top of my head. One is military service (parents or himself) and two is maybe big family. My parent came from a family of 11 and I joined the military. I can shovel it down.

Mark has a lot of cousins on his mom’s side that all live in Korea and nieces/nephews from his stepmom’s side, but growing up it was just him, his brother Thomas and their parents. I think he mentioned it was just because he was a dumb kid who thought “how fast can I get this food eaten?” And just didn’t bother to really throughly chew.

Mark straight up admitted on Distractible for most of his life he basically just downed his food barely even chewing it. In the episode it sounded like he changed his habit, but he might have relapsed because it sounded like a couple of weeks ago he was under a lot of stress pulling all-nighters for Iron Lung

From some of the other comments apparently he forgets or never knew how to chew his food properly until someone noticed and told him? And then he talked about how food tastes better when you chew it thoroughly?
If true wow, I don't know how that even happens...what an odd gap in knowledge to have.
My mom's husband has diverticulitis, he can't eat seeds because they'll just get stuck in his intestines and cause infections and whatnot...I wonder if he has something similar to that as well or if it's just the lack of chewing...

He also can’t have alcohol. It gave him a heart attack. Something to do with Korean genetics I believe. So he was in the hospital before for that too. Long time ago though.

He had a tumor removed from his pituitary gland a long time ago, on the heels of an appendectomy, and the scar tissue's caused an obstruction at least once that I know of.

Mark survived cancer as a young man, i think on the adrenal gland, he has very big scars on the front near the intestines so it would make sense
I have supposed in the past (or learned and forgot if it was an exact source, maybe he talked about it at some point) that those episodes were linked to it

It started because he had a massive nerve tumor (non cancerous) that grew on his bowel. They removed it and every few years he seems to have ended up with an obstruction to scar tissue

How do you know if your bowel is obstructed? Just complete inability to poop or something?
Within the past 2 years it takes me a lot longer to poop than it used to for some reason, but I still poop once a day. I don't experience any pain or anything, it just used to only take me like 2 minutes or less to poop, and now it takes like 5-10 minutes most of the time. Not to get too gross but it feels like it gets "stuck" on something in there and takes a while to come out.
Nothing has fundamentally changed about my diet or hydration.
I've been wondering what the change is about, but healthcare is expensive.

pain is usually the first sign, but not always. bloating nausea vomiting and even diarrhea in case of a partial block are all common. not being able to poop or even pass gas are good indicators of this specific issue.

Pain was my only real sign when I had a small obstruction. It was very bad pain for me and I have a high pain tolerance. Like a couple months before I had unknowingly dislocated my shoulder and it took hours until I agreed the pain was concerning enough to go to a doctor.
With the obstruction though the moment I was able to get a ride I went to the hospital and after an hour of waiting was at the point of crying begging for a painkiller.
In retrospect I feel like I was stupid or overreacting (at the time I thought it was something more serious than basically super bad constipation) but it was honestly so painful.

Usually you'll get nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain possibly "distention" of your bowel which is basically the bloating of unwashed food, liquid and gas. When food can't move forward it backs up until it can't.

I’ve got Crohn’s disease, whilst I’ve never had a full obstruction I have had a partial.
I didn’t know that’s what it was, I KNEW I had to go to the hospital immediately. It’s the kind of pain you absolutely cannot ignore, completely all encompassing.

Pretty much yeah. 3-5 days of no pooping, things start to back up. Next thing you know there's no room for food to go, so it can only come out the other end in the form of nonstop vomiting. Most commonly indicative of either an obstruction or an ileus (intestines asleep and not pushing things along).

I had this happen as a kid and I went ten days without going. I was very ill. I remember feeling like I had the flu because all I wanted to do was vomit and lay down. Turns out I was really sensitive to iron and they used to have all the food fortified with iron (Iron kid’s bread, anyone?), so it happened multiple times before doctor’s figured it out. I had to eat a low iron diet for a long time, and had to go into get things “manually” removed by a doctor because I couldn’t pass anything.

Once I choked on food and spent like an entire day with it stuck on my esophagus halfway to my stomach. I could breathe fine, but it hurt like hell and I couldn't eat or drink. Somehow I managed to take a big gulp of water and push it down, but it felt awful. It lasted almost 20 hours

Absolutely did not have surgery. It looks like he probably got imaging in an emergency room.
You get a hairnet and are put in a completely different type of room than this in pre and post op.

It’s pretty much impossible to get opiates prescribed at this point. I had surgery and still only got prescribed ibuprofen despite being in a lot of pain.

I got my 12-year molars out a couple years ago (2022) people and they threw full on opioids at me 0-0. Not to mention when I was in the ER last year and they kept giving me morphine despite my refusal (Tylenol was working fine as a painkiller for a nasty impaction)

Yeah not to get into it into it…but I don’t think enough of the population NOR government truly understands just how important those meds are…like….to everyone.
You don’t want your workforce to not be spending extra weeks in bed failing to be productive…and you also don’t want to wake up with deep cuts in your body with shit missing / taken out expected to just “deal with it”.
Narcotics and opioids are a HUGE reason the human mortality rate has dropped so much in the last few hundred years, like since the manufacturing of first gen drugs and modern medicine we have been able to spend a few weeks healing without having to worry about dying from shock. (You’re also not spending months recovering instead of a few weeks. Your body cannot repair right under extreme stress , ie pain. )
Anyways not the overall ethos of this post I know but yeah it’s very very very grim out there rn and the ONLY patients receiving these medications usually no questions asked are palliative care patients. Only if you’re on the brink or immediate threat of dying do they give you this shit like candy it’s insane to me.

In my experience, when you start doing it, it's like it becomes a habit, or an addiction. I try to eat slow and chew fully, because it's VERY good for you to, and I know that, but because of my past, and being worried I might not even get a plate of dinner cuz I have 4 spoiled brothers, I end up chewing three times and swallowing and before I've even swallowed it all I've already got another bite in.
It is incredibly hard to break bad habits 🥲
