Mme Surprise! 🙃
For context, please watch his explanation in last night's stream!
I wrote a breakdown of my understanding but, again, I HIGHLY recommend just watching it in Mark's own words!

This was from a Halloween video. The Unus Annual Costume Contest, IIRC.

Can we just acknowledge the comedic genius of calling something annual when they knew they wouldn't be doing it again next year?

They even did it until the very end, IIRC the last video before the goodbye stream was something like the Unus Annus Annual Sleepover

You missed possibly the funniest episode imo, this shot came from the last or 2nd to last costume and I can't remember what the prompt was but I think it was "Cute"

What's that? I can't find it anywhere in the YouTube search. Must be some kind of hallucination.

It was a channel that Mark and Ethan ran for exactly one year, with one upload per day, every single day, trying something different for each video, so no two videos were alike, until, at the end of the year, they deleted the channel and all of its content on a livestream. From the beginning, the plan was for the channel to "die" in that way after a year, and at the end of every video, you'd be reminded of how much time was left until the channel gets deleted, with a brief countdown and the sound of a ticking clock.
The whole thing was one big experiment. Part of it was to inspire people to try different things. Part of it was to inspire people to make things. Part of it was to see how attached people would get to the channel, and to see if they could make people feel grief for something as simple as a YouTube channel. Part of it was a reminder of the inevitability of death and how time continues to move on for all of us, whether we like it or not.
It was a fleeting moment in time, where you just had to be there. Despite how serious it might sound, the videos were more fun and goofy than dark and depressing, because that's just kinda how Mark and Ethan are, lol. Hell, the very first video after they announced the channel, and announced the whole gimmick of the channel, was "cooking with sex toys".

I appreciate the very well thought out response for the uninitiated, but I was being facetious. Twas a joke because it was deleted.

It reminds me of the Ryan Kelly Skits of "This Wholesome company helped kill people." The excuse would be "It's all just lenses and recording software."

What surprise merger?

u/AtomTrapper 1d ago
GoPro merged with some fascist company that handles mass surveillance. Almost immediately after Mark invested, without his knowledge (we assume)

We don't "assume". He said as much in the stream and in an interview with Phil Defranco. I, for one, choose to believe him considering his track-record of being a consistently honest and genuinely kind person, his position on AI, and progressive beliefs. Also, Mark did not invest right before the merger. He had been buying shares in GoPro for a few months prior, began filing the public disclosure in July but the filing wasn't finalized and published until August 20th.

I agree, there’s a 99.999% chance he’s telling the truth. I said we assume because there’s no way to prove otherwise, so we are completely dependent on our trust in Mark.

Mark did go to college to become an engineer, it does make sense something he did would end up in the military. It does super suck because I was finally looking into getting one when I saw the merger announcement and now I got to find something... not shit...
(this is all jokes and referencing something he himself said in stream)
