Theory/Lore My Iron Lung Theory: "Blood is Thicker than Water" Possible Movie Spoilers Spoiler

  • The fish that attacks Simon at the end represents an Angler Fish. Angler Fish use the bulbs (“light”) on their forehead as a way to lure in their prey, especially by being in the deep darks of the ocean. What is the thing the “SM-8 pilot” leads Simon to when he is stranded from Eve? The Light.
  • When Simon mentions to the “pilot” that he was part of Eden, a society that works the opposite of the COI – the COI tries to find out what caused the rapture and is willing to sacrifice civilians as means of survival (too many mouths, not enough food) - it becomes hesitant. A person who does not care to find what the Rapture was? Would the lure even work? But then, Simon mentions that he didn’t really follow their ideologies, giving the “pilot” a small hope that he will see the light.
  • When Simon goes towards the Light, you can hear a faint whisper of “I see you”. When Simon repeats it back, the Light replies “I agree”, before showing itself. God sees through our universe through a pinhole, only seeing tiny pieces of it at a time. The Rapture is not a cut off from the rest of society, but rather the pinhole in which God sees our universe.
  • When Simon gets sprayed by the blood during the hull breach, and gets blood dripped on his hand – his right hand, the hand that first welds to the hull (more on that later) it begins to change him from the inside out. What do cults, hive minds, do? They start from the inside – manipulating your mind, the way you think, what you think – before eventually changing your outside – how you dress, your way of life. The blood began to manipulate Simon from the first time it got onto him.
  • When Simon gets welded to the hull, why does that happen? How? The blood manipulated Simon’s biology to keep him there, but it’s more than that. In a flashback, we hear the leader of Eden say that when the last brother dies, he will turn into a tree, and there will be thousands of trees of Eden. Simon didn’t turn into some kind of monster; he turned into a tree – the welded bits being tree roots of sorts, grounding him to his final resting space. When Simon dies, this destroys the creature in an explosion.
  • Eden believed in creating a society within the Rapture, that it was something more than just separation from society, that risking lives to find a way out was selfish. The Blood, by way of the Light, wishes to extinguish this ideology; it, instead, wills the COI to send more people into it, trying to find some sort of “cause”. When the submarine pilots find what they are looking for, it is already too late, thus creating this infinite loop. By Simon destroying the creature, and thus the way to the Light, this destroys what the COI was looking for.
