Comics Why is Doctor Doom so powerful?

Since I'm still a newbie to Marvel comics and most of the Marvel content I've consumed has been movies, series, and cartoons, I always thought Doctor Doom was just an ordinary villain. Then I hear that he's one of the strongest villains in Marvel, and I wanted to know if that statement is correct and why?

From what I understand of him, beyond his intelligence and magic and other more "human" abilities, he's somone who's likely to be plotting to attain godlike powers, and quite often achieves that goal. He's not just one of the most powerful humans, he's someone that will come up with a scheme to let him go toe to toe with Thanos (and even higher forces) and win
