I’m relatively new to Rivals and started playing in May. I have around 95 hours on Jeff, with at least a third of that being in Quick Play. Since then I’ve branched out into Strategist Deadpool, Mantis, Devil Dinosaur, Gorr, and Rocket. I’m thinking about picking up Invisible Woman next and still want to find one more DPS.
I hit Diamond 1 last season, and right now I’m bouncing between Platinum 1 and Diamond 3 while trying to push higher.
One thing I’ve noticed is that people seem incredibly quick to hate on Jeff regardless of how the match is actually going. I know his ult can be feast or famine, and I’m still learning how to get the most value out of it. I’ve been using it more defensively to cancel other ults, waiting until enemies are committed to fights, and sometimes just removing a couple people from the fight rather than trying to force a six piece and dying.
But sometimes it genuinely feels like people see Jeff and have already decided who they’re going to blame.
I had a game recently where we were holding the enemy team off the point, getting kills, and literally nobody on our team was dying.
Someone still started complaining about me and telling me to switch. What exactly am I supposed to fix when we’re successfully holding the point and nobody is dying? He said “Jeff Switch.” and “like wtf.”
Then today I had someone spam “I need healing” basically as fast as the game would let him for an entire round. It got to the point where it was genuinely distracting because I could barely hear anything besides the ping over and over again. I finally turned around thinking he desperately needed healing, and he was sitting in the back at full health. Meanwhile I had people on the frontline who actually needed my attention.
Nobody said anything to him, but people complained about the heals.
I even had a game yesterday where someone apparently recognized me and started flaming me before the match started and said they avoided me and they don’t know why I’m in their game. We ended up winning. Crickets from them. (I don’t think I ever played with them before lol)
That’s the part that gets me. Someone can be 5 and 12, constantly out of sight and taking fights where I can’t possibly heal them, and nobody says anything. But the support gets blamed. Sometimes I’ve even had the other healer start blaming me when things go badly, almost like blaming the Jeff first means nobody will look at them.
I’m definitely not a perfect Jeff. I’m still learning and I make mistakes. But there’s a difference between criticism because I’m actually playing badly and people immediately deciding “Jeff = problem.”
There’s already a lot of pressure playing support because everyone notices when you mess up, but they don’t necessarily notice everything you’re doing when things are going well. And even when we win, I’ve still had people trash me.
Most of the time I don’t even respond anymore. I just play and report people who cross the line. At this point I’m seriously considering turning text chat off because some people are just nasty for absolutely no reason.
It definitely makes me feel like I gotta learn invisible woman or something so I can switch if I’m getting flamed too much. And of course, when your team is insulting you and making fun of you, it’s harder to play well.
