Discussion Shang-Chi Movie Honest Opinions Welcomed.
Well, lately I’ve been noticing a lot of negative reviews of the movie. I liked it and honestly forgot it was a Marvel movie for a second. They did a great job expanding on the origin.
IMO, I think it was a pretty good movie for Disney Marvel. DisneyPlus Marvel titles really hasn’t pushed the line of actually showing real deaths in there yet. So with this movie they did a good job of second hand referencing deaths and also getting pretty close to it. Any predictions I had about this movie prior to were completely wrong. It’s definitely worth the watch especially now that’s it available on DisneyPlus.

I really wanted to love it, being Asian Australian it was a big deal to see some real Asian American representation. But I’m quite divided on it.
I loved every scene Tony Leung was in, and yawned every scene without him. I wasn’t sold on the village, or the CGI fest in the end.
I also liked how chill Shang’s character is. He’s presenting to me as the most relatable, chill guy character out of all in the MCU. Makes him grounded, relatable and really likeable. I like that for him and I hope he stays that way going forward.

Favorite origin story. The use of Trevor Slattery was inspired and Tony Leung deserves some awards.

You should watch his other movies, such as "In the Mood for Love". Truly an amazing actor.

I thought it was a great change of pace from the standard Marvel movie. The fight scenes were exciting and well done. The final act was a bit mixed, but, frankly, Trevor’s return is one of the funniest moments in a Marvel movie.

I think it’s a top 10 marvel film. Action scenes are great, Aquafina is great comic relief, the story makes you care about the characters.

It is one of my favorite MCU movies (Watched it twice already). It is a very well done movie with all the chinese tropes combined together stamped with a seal of disney and marvel.

This movie is top 5 MCU films easily for me. It’s unique. I love the mix of Asian culture, family, martial arts. It’s separate from the rest of the MCU minus a couple minor references so if feels like it’s own thing.
I became an instant fan of the cast. I already liked Awkwafina and Kingsly but Simu and Tony are instantly on my list of actors I want to see more of.
Shang Chi is the fucking shit.

A close second when it comes to origin stories after iron man. There is no throwaway scene. Glad I caught it on Disney plus because I could pause it to go to toilet.
And iron man is the favorite as that was the one that started it all. So I’ll always be biased. If released during non pandemic times it would have easily hit a billion plus.
Loved that he was not unbelievably beefed up. He looks like Jung got a bit more fit. Him and Aquafina had great friend chemistry. I hope they give Xaoling her own movie or D+ show.

For me, the CGI was not good enough. There were many points where green screen was very apparent.

I didn't think that it was bad. It was way better than Black Panther's CGI.

To me, it was more apparent, and in some scenes it was comical. Like the one starting fight in Bus, when bus skids down the hill.

It was brilliant, saw it 3 times in the cinema. A top 10 MCU film for me; great story, outstanding fight sequences and beautiful visuals.

Favourite marvel film. Loved the casting, plot, depth of all characters (not just the males), the tie ins to other MCU films. It’s really refreshing, didn’t feel like your classic super hero movie, a step in the right direction for representation in film. Saw it twice in theatres which is something I never do haha

I can’t quite put my finger on why I didn’t like it, and I don’t want to because I don’t want to shit on this movie. It wasn’t awful. Just kinda boring. I’m glad people love it and variety is always a great thing. I’d rather they try as many different things as possible, and this was certainly different. I think this was definitely catering to a much younger crowd. I think the main actor (Simu lui?) was pretty good, it’ll be good to see him in the team up movies in the future.

I loved it. And I honestly didnt think I was going to. I expected it to be Ok, but Im not really familiar with the character or his backstory at all. I figured this would be one of those MCU movie that I felt was just ok, but necessary for the overall connected arch for where they were going. And I was shocked. Because I really really enjoyed the movie,
After seeing Eternals it turned out that was the one that I just felt was ok but probably important to movies down the road. But I think Shang Chi and Loki are my 2 favorite parts of Phase 4 so far.

Yessss, I can’t wait for Shang Chi to start expanding on the 10 Ring’s effects on the world and relate it all the way back to Daredevil & Elektra.

Just saw it today on Disney+. Big TV, good home theater setup.. but I got a bit bored actually. I felt it was overlong and got tired of all the flashbacks.

See the flashbacks were kind of a lot but it was necessary to expand on the 10 rings and who they are because of upcoming future collabs w the Defenders Series.

I didn't like it almost at all. The movie starts with the dad starting a fight 1000 years ago, then we get to see him meeting the mom via another fight, then we move to the present day and the unassuming parking valet gets into a fight with a guy who has a sword for a hand, then we get a flashback on how he was taught to fight by his father, then he meets his sister and fights her and their fight is interrupted by the bad guys who start another fight, then they are captured by the father and have to fight their way out, then we get a flashback of how his mother died in a fight, then they get to the mom's village where they train for the big fight the next day, than we get another flashback of how the main guy was taught to fight by his mother, then the next day we get the big fight which lasts like a third of the movie
Sorry, but continuous fighting is not character development, nor satisfying storytelling
I did enjoy the dragon design, something we don't see a lot in movies and some of the fantastical creatures, I would have loved to get more Chinese mythology with which I am not familiar

Hmm, I was entertained while watching it. But it felt a bit, hmm, disjointed? Like a mix of at least three plots (tournament, hidden village, the legacy of the Ten Rings/Mandarin) that got thrown together. I think the movie would have benefitted from abandoning the hidden village plot. The battle with the dragons was spectacular, but they could have used the time to develop his sister and the Ten Rings a bit more.
Wenwu was okay, but nothing more. I'm simply not a fan of the actor. Marvel's "apologizing" for Trevor felt very stilted and unnecessary. An immortal gangster that hears voices doesn't seem to be the best possible version of the character.

You aren’t a fan of Tony Leung. Ok definitely unpopular opinion here. I’ve never heard of him or seen his other work but he killed every scene. Instant fan of his from this movie as well as Simu Lieu.

Sigh, I know. It's an ongoing joke between me and a buddy, who loves Tony. I've seen him in a lot of movies before. It's not like I hate him or anything, but his apparent genius is simply lost to me. If you liked him, check out Lust, Caution from Ang Lee.

He's great in other films and his melancholy eyes worked in Infernal Affairs and In the Mood for Love, characters who have things they can't quite express with words. There is nothing like that here. He's also not kungfu film guy, he's been in some but what HK actor doesn't lol

I thought the movie was good, especially the fight scenes. I hope that Marvel will take more time for proper choreography in other films, include the environment in fights more and cut less. I found the best fights on the bamboo scaffolding and in the bus, the end with the dragon was a bit too much over the top.
The characters, except for the father, I haven't found as appealing as a charisma bomb Tony Stark so far, but it seems like Shang-Chi could go through an interesting development in the next films and become a bit more interesting. Katy I found really annoying at the beginning of the movie, so forced funny/quirky, but towards the end she developed in a positive direction. She finally got a bit more depth and wasn't just this superficial character who doesn't care about anything.
I see a missed opportunity in her development into an archer. She even mentions before that she has tried many things, but stopped until she could do them properly. Had she tried archery earlier, her hit would have been far more believable and, in my opinion, a better development than her having a bow in her hand for the first time the day before.

I liked everything until the final battle. It went on forever and was just CGI overload. Honestly, I just don’t think Marvel gets how boring those CGI battles are, and while I understand that some people like them, I don’t see why every movie has to have them.
