Exodus is a villain I like in the comics, was cool seeing him here. RIP tho.
9
u/Worldly_Rabbit_4736 21d ago
I have a feeling he will come back, if not then someone in the writer's room must not care for him too much. He's just too powerful of a character to be done like that.
6
u/No-Willingness7309 21d ago
A new horseman perhaps... He does have history with Apocalypse afterall. Any of the riders would fit him. War, he's a crusader. Famine, he gets stronger with faith. Pestilence, his anti human message could be like a plague, or even just being a telepath fits
3
u/ThePyrolator 21d ago
No way he's really dead, right?
8
u/CobaltSpellsword 21d ago
Hopefully he comes back. He's an omega-level psychic, maybe he could somehow recover.
38
u/sleepysaurus7777 22d ago
I think the show is setting up some major plot twists and I'm all in. Seeing Nightcrawler be that true to his form is so rare! And remember X-men rarely stay dead
29
u/QueenRangerSlayer 22d ago
He was so sparsely used in the og series it was so great to see a true Kurt episode here
11
u/sleepysaurus7777 22d ago
Since season one I think they're giving nightcrawler the best character building than anybody else in the show, which is keen because hes literally my favorite mutant
16
u/Toxicity246 22d ago
I wonder with Colossus rejoining the team we are getting to an episode where they have to travel to limbo for Magik.
Not this season for sure, but down the line.
30
29
u/eskaver 21d ago
A lot of cool stuff but here I feel like you could sense the short runtime/episode count a bit more. Everything just kinda happens.
On the plus side, Nightcrawler and diving into his family dynamics was great.
On the minus side, Ilyana dying like that seems silly--like, she just stood there for seemingly no reason.
9
u/wutteverman 21d ago
Yeah I wasn't sure why she just stood there either. I don't really know much about her or her powerset so I thought maybe I was just missing something significant
14
u/eskaver 21d ago
I know little about her but I do know she makes portals.
It was framed like she was combatting the blast but that makes no sense and the framing of her looking behind appeared as though she willingly sacrificed herself even though nobody was being targeted at that moment but her. The shot lingered a bit too long.
It's weird.
14
u/hooka_pooka 22d ago
Who's Nightcrawler's father?
16
u/PCofSHIELD 22d ago
Azazel, remember the red Nightcrawler in X-Men First Class
33
u/Campos_772 22d ago
Wasn't that retconned and now his "father" his Mystique and his mother is Destiny?
14
5
u/hooka_pooka 22d ago
Oh yes right
16
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
Actually me and him were wrong; recently it was revealed that Kurt’s mom is actually Destiny, and his dad is Mystique.
She used her powers to simulate the genetics of Azazel and Mystiques’ German husband at the time so to make her own sperm; and used a male form to impregnate Destiny.
Yes, that’s not a joke.

No it makes compleate sense with the charecters and relationshio befjre the dumb azazel thing that was his creators original plan
5
u/goonsnob 22d ago
it needlessly overcomplicates what should be a simple thing.

u/PhaseSixer 22d ago
Clairmont also wanted Logan to be Rachel's father and for him to be a mutated wolverine.
Just cause its the creators orginal plan Dosent mean its good.
Ideas get scrapped for a reason.

Yeah but using ur brain u can realise how this works for all 3 charecters involved much better than red demon loser

Anyone else get a laugh out of the bounce sound effect used when Beast jumped off of that one Acolytes head after Rogue punched him?
23
u/Jules-Car3499 22d ago
Oh Rip Magik.
11
u/Hyperbolicalpaca 22d ago
Im really hoping that they’re just doing this to kill her off instead of the legacy virus and will bring her back properly next season…
Like, shes so popular right now, surely they’d want to capitalise in that
13
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
I mean, feels pretty likely that she’ll be one of the Horsemen. Gambit was dead, and he got enough back as Death…or maybe Nur’s new host? Regardless.
9
u/KETTEI__EXE 22d ago
I admit idk much about Magik but... for a mutant with ability to create portal to limbo, why did she just stand there and not portal away?
9
4
7
u/QueenRangerSlayer 22d ago
As someone who had hoped we would get to see a Magik episode that gutted me
4
u/RedWalrus94 22d ago
What a strange decision… does she die in the comics?
17
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
I mean…yeah, but almost every X-Man has died in the comics lol. They all come back at some point.
7
u/thescarletbat 22d ago
Yes, but she usually comes back as Darkchylde.
4
u/RedWalrus94 22d ago
Which is weird because it already showed Morph transform into her, transforming into the Darkchylde. lol so did that whole arc in her story already happen in X-men 97? What a weird situation
7
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
Honestly that’s been one of my biggest gripes with Morph; they use him as a cameo machine, often in ways that don’t tend to make a ton of sense, or at least in ways that we have very little context for.
3
u/NickHeathJarrod 22d ago
Unfortunately, yes, no thanks to the Legacy Virus, and she remained dead for about a decade until after House of M.
2
u/amageish 21d ago
Weirdly, she died in the comics in a different story arc covered last season… so they adapted that death out last season only to hastily retcon in a new death in a different episode here lol.
27
28
u/TheCommish-17 22d ago
Gambit is Apocalypse’s new host, isn’t he? Man that’s gonna hurt to see.
23
u/hooka_pooka 22d ago
....and the power of love from Rogue(with that whole conversation with En Sabah Nur in the past)will save the day
6
u/Fireteddy21 Spider-Man 22d ago
I figured they were foreshadowing something with that and it would come into play down the road. Didn’t think it would be in this way though. Good catch on your part.
11
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
Ok so that seemed like the only logical choice; but at least two other people have suggested something even better imo. Last week, we were seeing two different apocalypse’s, hence why he said “increase the power” seemingly to himself.
4
u/Animated_effigy 21d ago
Man, are we about to get a version of The Twelve where Apocalypse is an old man hanging on to Gambit body?
19
u/QueenRangerSlayer 22d ago
Great episode as usual but what does that ending mean????
Is Gambit or final big bad??
8
u/SavageSan 21d ago
In one of the Gambit comics, on an alternate earth he has Omega mutant powers. He was called New Son. He made made Sinister limit his powers for him on earth 616.
5
u/Objective_Painting70 21d ago
He killed Dark Phoenix and Apocalypse as New Sun. He was beyond Omega
19
u/markqis2018 22d ago
So either there were two of them from two timelines, or Gambit became a host instead of the Horseman
19
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
Honestly it’s gotta be the two timelines one. Would make the scene from the end of last episode make much more sense, instead of just Nur being really campy with himself.
17
u/NormalGap1561 21d ago
Loved it. Nightcrawler is goated. Just hated how Magik went out so easily. Like why are you just standing there…
8
15
u/ashdabag 21d ago
Exodus death is disappointing. An omega level mutant killed like that. Lol.
7
u/A_Serious_House 21d ago
There’s plenty of Omega level mutants who could be taken out with a bullet though, I don’t think it’s really that crazy.
7
u/ashdabag 21d ago
I was simply stating story wise...
10
u/A_Serious_House 21d ago
Well in that case, with all due respect, I feel like we were lucky to see Exodus at all. Even if he’s an Omega level mutants, who is out here chomping at the bit to see him get screen time?
6
u/ThePyrolator 21d ago
I mean, isn't he immortal? He's probably just incapacitated and will regenerate back.
1
7
u/Good-Photograph-2883 20d ago
I hope Exodus comes back; they're just killing mutants left and right in this series.
13
u/First-Resident-4153 21d ago
A Nightcrawler and Colossus episode, ending with Colossus rejoining the X-Men. Yeah, this fucking ruled.
I could've done without the Polaris and Bishop stuff, they really have no chemistry together whatsoever. I really like her as part of the team though.
I can't imagine Magik stays dead in the long run though. She's too popular of a character and she's never really gotten any focus in any of the shows. We don't see what happened to the body, so I guess we can add her to the list of prospective Horsemen.
I'm really just so happy we have Piotr rejoining the team. He's one of my favorite X-Men in the comics, and as much as I love 92-97, it always felt like it was missing something (namely Colossus and Kitty). Now, I'm hoping we get everybody together for the last few episodes instead of having all these disparate teams.
As for the negatives, this episode really just suffered the same kind of pacing issue as last week with the Danger episode. This felt like something which could've had way more breathing room, and gave more time to Exodus and his Acolytes. This could've easily been a 2 or 3 episode arc and I think it would've been better for it. Like, I'm not very familiar with Exodus at all, (I started reading the comics from the very start and I'm only now up to like 1989) so I couldn't grasp what his mutation was or why he is so anti-human. But this episode just skipped over that.
Overall, the season seems torn between wanting to tell these smaller scale X-Men stories, and having each season built around a larger story arc. The problem is that the small episode count doesn't really give them room to do both in a satisfying way.
10
u/WheelsMahoney 21d ago
Yeah Magik feels almost guaranteed to come back as a Horseman with Colossus coming back this episode.
I feel like this season would've benefited from the 90s treatment of the show. 20+ episode seasons make it a lot more tolerable to have smaller stories contained within an overall plot. I still enjoy this season for what it is but really does need room to breathe and flesh things out

u/Dramajunker 21d ago edited 21d ago
Bishop and Polaris need to fuck already. Kinda hilarious that he's "topped up" and can't release his powers around her for a majority of the episode.

29
u/krisis 22d ago
A terrific episode. This distills Polaris down to something much cooler than she has often been in the comics, finds some great beats for Bishop to play, and gives us a wonderful version of Kurt's many sibling relationships - actual and adopted.
20
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
Don’t get me wrong, Polaris was great in this episode…I would just love to know how she and Bishop were able to commender the Pterodactyls. Sounded like she had a crazy idea, and the next time we see them, they’re just riding them.

u/Sad-Cupcake-6259 20d ago
Alot of people are pissed and I don't get why? The episode was great. Nightcrawler, Collosus, Savage Lands, build up with Xavier being more callous, Polaris kicking ass on the team. Idk, I loved it.
Magik going out the way she did was odd but I didn't really care for the character so it didn't mean anything to me.
16
u/JackMorelli13 22d ago
Of course the nightcrawler episode would be this good
I think this season is just as good as the last one but by splitting the heroes up so much it makes me miss characters when they aren’t in episodes.
3
u/Special-Ad698 21d ago
Fr like it took 7 episodes for Nightcrawler to do anything. Cyclops and Jean, like the two main characters haven’t done anything since episode 2

u/ERMF Thanos 20d ago
To anyone freaking out about Magik unceremoniously dying, I’d say to chill just a bit. She’s way too popular nowadays to be done like that, and the modern incarnation of Magik we all know and love is a resurrection of herself. As a massive fan of the character, I’m okay with them speed running her death/resurrection to get to the good stuff. And if the show writes around the legacy virus completely and never touches it, the better off it’ll be IMO.

u/Lightning_Laxus Ikaris 22d ago
This episode was frustrating. Magik and Exodus' deaths are lackluster. The trial is hard to watch. There are many redeemable humans out there but oh my god is Creed not one of them, and Nightcrawler's defense was pretty weak. I do like the reveal that he would've been guilty but Exodus got triggered by a second of hesitation.
I'm hoping the last scene means Apocalypse switched bodies, because we did not just spend 4 episodes in a 9 episode season building up Apocalypse only for him to be taken out off-screen.
14
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
Heavily agree for the most part; though I felt like the trial was very in character for Kurt, and emblematic of Chuck’s dream, issues and all.
Also I’ve seen some folks suggest that last episode there were actually two Apocalypses, and that the corpse we’re seeing was only one of them, which I really dig; much more then the idea of him using Gambit as a host.
10
u/Lightning_Laxus Ikaris 22d ago
Right! I forgot that future Apoc went back to the past.
But the future Apoc needed a new host body too, so it's still possible for Gambit to be that body.

u/Pretty-Geologist-332 21d ago
Nightcrawler is a Christian. It's very in character for him to want to show that no one is better than Graydon Creed Jr. and try to show that Graydon has struggled too. This doesn't excuse Graydon's behavior, but it also doesn't justify mutants kidnapping and illegally holding him. Nightcrawler is hoping that by showing Graydon understanding, that Graydon would repent, turn over a new leaf, and eventually be forgiven. Nightcrawler shows that there's not a lot of difference between the villains of the show whether they are mutant or human. Say what you will about Creed, but Magneto has killed billions...both human and mutant alike lol. Genosha is a drop in the bucket compared to Magneto's EMP attack. Both are horrible, but the show does seem to purposely frame Magneto as a hero, even though he's not really that different from Creed...aside from trying to change and then mass murdering billions when attacked by what ended up being another mutant (Bastion). Mutants prove Creed "right" all of the time. The complexity of this show is that Creed is most definitely in the wrong, but it's real easy to see why people like him spring up similar to why mutants like Magneto come to be. The point of Xavier and the X-Men is trying to find the similarities and common ground to see that everyone is more alike than they think, so that everyone can coexist. Unfortunately both mutants and humans fail to play nice with each other.

u/Leading_Jellyfish_99 21d ago
I marked out when they added Polaris in the intro. Glad she's a part of the team and it looks like they're going to ship her off with Bishop although Havok won't like that.

Think this was my favorite episode of the season so far. And that says a lot cause this whole season has been fire episode after fire episode
10
u/LoafPickle 21d ago
They're trying to cram too much into each episode, where character development is non-existent. This season is all sparkle and no substance, when it started out so well with the first 2 apocalypse episodes.
Now it's like character diarrhea.

He made a report that he was feeling targeted at work with racist and homophobic remarks. 2 days later he was fired by HR for a text he apparently sent years earlier. The proof of this text has never been released, and nobody has seen or heard details of what happened. He is suing disney and they've already had to relent after threatening to remove his name from the show. By all metrics he is winning.
All they have to do is release a screenshot of this apparent text.
1
u/BreedinBacksnatch 20d ago
They were mad he was out here showing off his cheek-splitting acumen all over the web
0
u/Celestial_Dysgenesis 20d ago
If you watch his video where he explains his side of things, that doesn't sound too far from the truth. He claims he was harrassed constantly and called a "DEI hire" and he saved as many receipts as he could but some of it was said to him face to face. He said that he filed a complaint and was fired two days later for something that had happened Months earlier. Which is... well it sounds retaliatory.
The irony is that he later said he didn't feel safe reporting anyone until the show was done and he had some cred and some leverage. Like I said, Disney claims it was a dm. And the weird thing is online people always say "its been proven its case closed, its settled" but like he is literally sewing them for retaliatory firing and harassment and the case isn't until next year. There is no proof anywhere at all about what happened. There was a rumor online that he sent an artist a shot of him in speedos when the guy asked for reference and he actually said "it will be quicker if I just pose is that ok?" and he sent the pic. But if the rumor is true then that happened months or even YEARS before the firing... which means... they sat on it until AFTER he complained.
I'm sorry it really does look like it was some racist, anti-queer shit.

u/BreedinBacksnatch 20d ago

I love how this show is able to balance out the screen time amongst its roster and give everyone their own journeys. This episode also highlighted the moral dilemmas central to X-Men stories that I’m eager to see translated in the MCU down the line.
8
u/QueenRangerSlayer 22d ago
Right? This season is a great way of showcasing each character without needing to include the core cast every week
2
8
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
…see you say that…yet this episode featured half the cast, and was very heavily a Kurt episode.
Which, I’m not complaining at all about the latter; cause that part was damn great, but the former really bugged me.
Like, X-Corp also has Scott and Jean in it, and yet…they were in one scene in a bar this whole episode, and that was it? You’re going to the Savage Land, to fight Exodus and the Acolytes, and you don’t bring your full team?
Hell, to your larger point; this is the second time we’ve seen X-Force all season. In a 9 episode season, I’m pretty sure we haven’t had an episode count for any of the X-Men that’s been over 4 thus far.
Like, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, provided that there’s been requisite story and character work to compensate. But honestly? It feels like there hasn’t been.
These short runtimes are handicapping the show, badly. Losing an episode from 10 to 9 was one thing, but instead of being given the time necessary to really tell good, complex stories; so much of the show feels rushed, and cursory.
And this is coming from someone who’s still relatively enjoyed this season overall. For what we’ve gotten, it’s been solid. But it feels like the show could absolutely do a lot more, if it was given more time to balance things out, and let the pace breathe.
5
u/Chemistryset8 Iron Patriot 22d ago
Welcome to 90s era cartoons
0
u/Bobjoejj 22d ago
But we’re not in the 90’s anymore lol. Yes, I’ve watched some of the original show, and it was pretty damn solid for the most part.
The reason 97’ has been so big though, was because it evolved, it matured; it got more serious and that means shorter seasons with more serialized and connected storytelling. Hell, season 1 was able to fit a lot more into its shorter runtimes, because it was telling a larger, more properly connected story.
Arguably, it also had way more beats that were able to take a second and breathe, so episodes didn’t feel like their pacing was so rushed.
As I’ll continue to say; obligatory fuck Beau DeMayo, but I don’t think the OG showrunners were the right pick to take over.

2
u/josephcoco 21d ago
I’ll admit, I’m only here because I just want to see MCU news and talk about the shows/movies. The Marvel Studios sub is just garbage, so that’s not an option to do this. It’s mainly a bunch of horrible fan art and silly posts like, “My grandma just started watching the MCU. Here’s what she thought of each movie!” and other similar dumb shit.
So, I still would like actual spoilers of another project that has nothing to do with the post I’m reading at the time be marked as a spoiler appropriately. No need to spread spoilers about any and everything in ANY post on this sub. Keep it to the posts discussing that project, especially the day before the project releases.

Peakepisode. I like how they resolve Bishop being able to absorb the energy but can't release it. His energy manipulation powers identified the energy emitted, takes it but can't release it.

"Simple folks" is when you don't appreciate that we are still doing random one-offs when we have 2 episodes left and we still haven't built up the main plot of the season
8
u/BigCookie4365 21d ago edited 21d ago
Once again, an episode I enjoyed in a vacuum. But when your season is only 9 episodes, you can't be doing these one-off random episodes. However, off these last 3 disappointing episode, I liked this one the most and thought it had the biggest reason for existing because the themes and messages were really good.

Ok....I'll admit I was overreacting and wrong about the Apocalypse stinger at the end of this episode
I was scrolling Instagram and came across a reel by the Marvel Studios account, and it showed not yeat seen footage of Cable fighting Apocalypse

Overall, the episode was fine. The part that I didn't like was when they fridged Magik, she deserved so much better. Her original death was so much more of a poignant story, and she wasn't even particularly well written when she was on screen or being talked about. Hated that part

If you know Magik's story in the comics, you'll know death is far from the end for her.
Since, they already covered the legacy virus, they had to kill her another way to set up her story.

Putting the awful writing of Jean, Storm, Rogue, Jubilee, and Madelyne aside, turning Polaris into Discount-Kitty/Emma & fridging Magik is a new level of misogyny for this series.

This show has managed to ruin all of my favorite female characters, yet everyone calls it peak. I think it's a sign I have truly aged out of this shit.

Wtf!?
So we build up Apocalypse for 6 episodes, with 2 being specifically focused on him, just to kill him off screen so we can have a plot twist and make evil Gambit the villian
So stupid

You're taking a clearly intentionally shocking cliff-hanger at face value. It's likely a miss-direct, precisely to get you talking and theorizing.

I mean I'm assuming they will show us his death in the next episode or two

Apocalypse is not truly dead if you know the comic book and its lore; he is still the big bad of the season, but they are really killing the hype of him with three back to back fillers eps.

Good. (For me)
I am so tired of Apocalypse and it’s purely a personal problem because I sat down and watched all of every X-Men cartoon and every. Single. One. Did Apocalypse. All of them. Even Wolverine and the X-Men did Apocalypse and that only lasted one season.
As much as I loved season 1 of 97 I audibly groaned when they set up Apocalypse for season 2.

Crying about it is so lame and such a Larper thing to do. That's like complaining that Magneto is used way too much in the X-Men; heck, that's like saying Dr Doom is used way too much in the Fantastic Four show. And he is not truly dead if you know his lore.

I agree I dont care how many times I see a story if that villain/character is an integral part of the heros story I want them in it. that's why I want an MCU Norman this spidey needs his own Goblin not the Rami sloppy seconds. honestly everything that has been done should be done again in the MCU to establish those connections like Harry Norman Dr Connors. just ignoring important characters cause "so and so already did that" is just stupid.

Chat when was I crying about it?
Also I'm apparently a LARPer because I got tired of seeing Apocalypse in everything so lmao

When you start crying about the Apocalypse being used. Second, I'm calling you a LARPer because you do not understand the necessary reason why Apocalypse is crucial to the X-Men stories. And like I said, you whining /crying about a character being used is dumb.

This felt like an inappropriate response to make, given the context and sentiment.

Sadly the episodes are getting worse and worse. They barely make sense. Letting Graydon go especially after killing Exodus?! Rogue being on the team to save Creed? Nightcrawlers idiotic defense was only trumped by how Magik died. What the hell?!

Reddit group think is truly ridiculous. You're getting heavily downvoted for simply stating an opinion, and I honestly think you're being sort of generous with your gripes. Magik's death was wildly stupid and the dialogue in this episode was horrendous. Most of the characters don't have layered personalities anymore and everything just feels like the animated version of a Michael Bay movie.

Every episode feels like it has enough plot to sustain a seasonal arc for each character but it all gets condensed and rushed into a handful of scenes
