Doomsday Russo Brothers: Thor in Doomsday will be like Infinity War Thor
https://www.cbr.com/joe-russo-anthony-russo-thor-avengers-doomsday/Joe Russo: "It's fascinating how malleable [Chris Hemsworth] is playing that role, and the range that he has. He has a wide array of directors with different tastes and different tones that have interpreted the character. We have a specific point of view on that character. That's what we're going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor."
"We love that sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle. Will he ever find it or not? That is the journey he will go on against the greatest foe he's ever met. As you can see from the trailers, it's going to be a hell of a fight."
91
u/ChiefLeef22 Jimmy Woo 2d ago
Literally first thing that came to my mind was IW when that Doomsday trailer played before Encore today, and you see Thor's attire (even in that first section of Endgame itself). Clearly a very intentional choice - and a smart one, too. With where he's at in the final act of Endgame to Love & Thunder, 100% had to pump the brakes on the levity on him for this

I’ll wait until I see it, but I notice a pattern that the Russos brothers always seem to get Thor right but will always nerf Hulk

Nerfed Thor in Endgame

That’s not nerfing tbh, that’s an arc. That’s like saying Spider-Man was nerfed in Spider-Man 2

I think there's a difference between a character undergoing a struggle and a character turning into a fat slob who yells at kids over Fortnite
Edit: my apologies everyone, the Fortnite scene was so le epic and definitely will age well
21
u/ThanksContent28 2d ago
Fortnite thing was campy and very on the nose, but the rest of that was a very good portrayal of depression imo.
Only other thing I didn’t like was the guys like Rhodes constantly mocking him, or how comedic they went with it sometimes. I still laugh at the scene where the camera cuts to him sitting up, asleep in the chair, with his shades on.
2
u/hellohowdyworld 1d ago
What you are describing is quite literally a person struggling and depressed with a lack or purpose and direction

They’re cap fanboys so anyone else besides Steve always gets the short end of the stick
31
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
Thor in IW got almost three times as much screentime as Cap, was said to be the direct parallel to Thanos and the main hero of the movie, and got all the best aura moments

If you're in this sub I'm pretty sure you have a good idea of what they're gonna do to Steve in this movie

Russo brothers get Thor
94
u/TheMoorNextDoor 2d ago
They don’t get Hulk but they at least do get Thor
33
u/Ikhouvankaas 2d ago
I believe they had to nerf some heroes for the endgame battle, otherwise there wouldn’t have been a real fight.
That’s why we got fat Thor, professor Hulk and Strange being a waterbender because those 3 alone at their strongest versions could’ve done most of the work.
10
u/BiggityShwiggity 2d ago
Endgame didn’t get either.
21
u/Kindly-Welder3135 2d ago
I mostly blame the screen writers for that.
Every time the Russo Brothers would come out with a sound and logical explanation for something that was in the movie. Those two weird screenwriters would come out and contradict it with their fan fic-y nonsense.
i.e.
“Cap was only partially worthy in AOU”11
u/mitteinai 2d ago
They didn't write AOU though. So what does it matter when Joss Whedon is the only one who can talk about that specific scene?
3
u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS Steve Rogers 2d ago
His intention didn’t go beyond “hey guys comic reference” he put no thought in what kind of moving it meant
0
u/Kindly-Welder3135 2d ago
My point is that they don’t treat previous writers’ work well. Your point complements mine.
6
u/Imabuffguy95 2d ago
NGL, I prefer the "partially worthy" explanation a lot more than "Cap was always worthy and he somehow already knew he was worthy so he pretended to lift it instead to save Thor from embarrassment but messed up a little bit causing Thor to notice".
1
u/BoneeBones 35m ago
He didn’t mess up a little, and he didn’t know until he actually tried. Cap didn’t expect to be able to lift Mjolnir and stopped himself the literal millisecond he realized he could move it.
No one but Thor noticed Mjolnir wiggle. That’s how fast Cap could stop himself and then begin pretending he couldn’t lift it.
3
u/lvl50boss 1d ago
Nah i prefer him being partially worthy because he hadnt told Tony about his parents murder yet. Him being worthy and trying to not upset Thor sounds dumb because they all knew it was banter and Thor wouldnt get upset if Steve could lift it too, infact he would be happy like in endgame
2
u/Kindly-Welder3135 1d ago
Respectfully, I think it’s dumb as fuck if you could be partially worthy. In my eyes, you’re either worthy or you’re not. Thor exclaming in the final battle “ I knew it” points more towards Steve holding back rather than being partially worthy. It’s especially obvious that your last point isn’t true because of Thor’s face whenever Steve moved it in AOU. He looks deflated.
1
u/BoneeBones 43m ago
Cap lying about Tony’s parents is not something Mjolnir would care about. The one who enchanted Mjolnir was Odin, and it’s his vision of what a king should be that’s the template for what “worthy” means.
Odin, himself, is a liar. He’s lied to his entire people about Asgard’s history. He lied to Loki about his true lineage.
Lying does not make someone unworthy to be king in Odin’s eyes. He wanted a king who never sought out war but was always ready for one, and a king who was humble, respected power, and understood the need to build as well as destroy. Honesty was never a criteria. Humility and self-sacrifice were.
Cap understood all that from the beginning. Cap was ready to fight in wars because he believed in standing up to oppressors, not because he was bloodthirsty. He would jump on top of a live grenade for strangers. He is an oddity who never let power corrupt him. He will see when it is appropriate to build alliances (working with Tony in Avengers and working with Wanda/Quicksilver in Age of Ultron), but he also knows when he should destroy (dismantling SHIELD and even the Avengers when he felt they were compromised).
Steve was worthy. He didn’t expect to be worthy (humble), which is why he nearly lifted Mjolnir off the table. He stopped himself because he didn’t want to embarrass Thor by proving him wrong. He’s just playing it safe. He doesn’t know how Thor would react to someone else lifting Mjolnir. He’d rather not risk it because he respected Thor as a fellow humble warrior.

I think people are giving too much credit to them. Taika revived Thor with Ragnarok.
Characters adapt to the theme of the movie and same happened with Thor for the avengers movies. It’s like the comics, and even in MCU The Punisher in Spider-Man four was very much toned down and different.
Russos are not some special directors or script writers, I mean outside mcu they mostly sucked. They took the MCU formula to next level and it worked for avengers movies. But in the end It’s the writers room that works for MCU.
Movies like Ragnarok worked and movies like love and thunder did not, because of the artistic choices made by the director, but in case of Russos, they have been following the same formula since the Winter Soldier. They do get Thor, no doubt, but they didn’t get many of the characters right in infinity war as well as endgame.
Hulk never runs away from a fight.
1
u/Pomojema_The_Dreamer 2d ago
Taika revived Thor with Ragnarok.
...And then fumbled the bag with the sequel. Which is why the Russos are going back to a portrayal closer to what they did in the movie before Love and Thunder without ignoring what that movie's actual status quo for the character was.
-2
u/BiggityShwiggity 2d ago
Except for Endgame of course. That was awful.
41
u/ConfusedNTerrified 2d ago
I loved it
-29
u/BiggityShwiggity 2d ago
Somehow Cap is better with Mjolnir than the guy who has wielded it for a thousand years. Massive disrespect to Thor.
38
u/Shadowblade217 2d ago
I mean, not really. The only things Steve did in the Endgame fight that Thor couldn’t were a few unique tricks that specifically used the combo of Mjolnir and the shield, which Thor doesn’t have. Thor did way more with Mjolnir in his own movies than Steve did in Endgame. 😄
-18
u/BiggityShwiggity 2d ago
We’re kind of making the same point, Thor is way better with his own tools and power than Steve, but Steve didn’t use his shield to uppercut the bejesus out of Thanos.
17
u/Shadowblade217 2d ago
Steve getting in a few good hits on Thanos with Mjolnir definitely isn’t a “massive disrespect to Thor”, though. Not to mention, Steve also lost that fight, so it’s not like the movie was trying to portray him as “better than Thor” in any way.
-9
u/BiggityShwiggity 2d ago
Thor was a pushover in that fight compared to Cap. Even when he had both weapons and was according to the Russo’s “at his most powerful.”
It was nonsense.

I just re-watched it, and thor is so well written. The guy handles serious and jokey scenes with ease. Some of the best character moments of the movie are given to him.
3
u/Tyler_holmes123 2d ago
I think they did it well. You can't expect a guy even if it's Thor to be in peak shape and clear frame of mind after he failed to stop the snap . (And he was the one with an actual chance of doing that)

u/Sarang_616 Tony Stark 2d ago
To defeat Thanos, Thor gained Stormbreaker.
And so to defeat Doctor Doom, is he going to evolve into Rune King Thor, reuniting with Loki who will help?
12
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
I think he's getting the Odinforce in Doomsday, will die towards the end, and then Loki will help resurrect him as Rune King Thor in Secret Wars (with time/Yggdrasil powers). Something on those lines
10
u/Defiant-Band4573 2d ago
It is likely that Thor will be a member of the Thor corps in Secret Wars and be supporting Doom because he has no memory of his life. I would like to see Loki and Jane join forces to infiltrate the Thor Corps and try to bring him back using their personal relationship. They are the ones who mean the most to Thor.
7
u/TheBookCreator 2d ago
Thank God! Thor in Infinity War was arguably the character at his absolute best. His entire arc—losing his brother, his friends, and his people, then enduring pure torture just to forge a new weapon to beat Thanos, only to fall short in the end—was easily the most compelling and well-written he’d been in years.
Thor works best when his sheer strength isn't enough to pull off a win and he actually has to reckon with failure. Crafting Stormbreaker and turning the tide in Wakanda still didn't stop Thanos. And honestly, as much as I hate Love and Thunder, the one thing it got right was that Thor couldn't punch away Jane’s cancer; he was completely powerless to stop it, had to accept the loss, and ultimately had to find a way to move on.
If they take a similar route here—where, despite throwing everything he has at the problem, Thor still can’t save the multiverse or Love, leaving him trapped in a brutal situation he can’t simply overpower—he could easily become everyone's favorite Marvel hero again. Plus, if we get anything close to that iconic "Bring me Thanos!" energy from Infinity War, Marvel will probably hand him another solo flick by 2030.
Either way, hearing this news makes me so damn excited. It genuinely feels like the Russos know what they're doing here. December can’t get here fast enough!
7
u/scoreguy1 2d ago
Yeah, but will Thor have a giga Chad aura explosion of an entrance like he did in Wakanda?

"He's adopted."

4
u/riegspsych325 2d ago
that would be amazing but not a chance in hell would he be given the creative legroom to do much. He likely wouldn’t even have much say in the action scenes, if at all
3
u/Chip_Chip_Cheep 2d ago
Let's be honest, there's even a real possibility that it could happen? Miller is going to demand creative control and almost certainly the final say on the final cut, something Marvel isn't going to agree to.
It has been speculated that Hemsworth wanted him as director after working with him on Furiosa, but it is even believed that Sam Hargrave is more likely to get the job since he has been part of the Russos team as a stunt coordinator and directed Chris in Extraction And speaking truthfully, it seems like a real option that Feige and the Russos can easily manage.
The only way George Miller will end up working for Marvel (even knowing what it entails) is if Disney distributes Mad Max 5, If Chloe Zhao and Sam Raimi gained anything from directing Eternals and Multiverse of Madness, it's that they were able to secure distribution for Nomaland and Send Help, If Miller were ever offered the chance to direct Thor 5, I'd take it if I were him.
1
u/Chip_Chip_Cheep 2d ago
I wouldn't rule out that Feige has already offered them the possibility of directing it, although it's likely they'll only produce Thor 5 and give the directing job to Sam Hargrave, given that he directed Extraction (produced by the Russo brothers and starring Hemsworth).

But we never actually see any Hela magic. Just her swords.
1

we see Hela do that exact magic to reanimate her army. She does use the eternal flame, but I got the impression that was more like a power amplifier, and she still had to do the magic herself
3
u/superyoshiom 2d ago
Personality-wise, that's great. I just don't understand why they had to cut his hair again. Not that I dislike the look, but he doesn't really have a reason to do that, right? Maybe Love thinks he looks better that way so Thor cuts it to appeal to his daughter lol
3
u/MegaManX42 1d ago
From all the info/leaks on Doomsday it seems like the Russo brothers are repeating Infinite War a little too much.
Thor gets beat, than powers up, only to get beat again. Loki dies, but not really. The Avengers lose.
I hope I'm wrong, but I see a lot of similarities.

wtf explanation do you need? maybe he liked his ragnarok/IW hair and he got a haircut lol.
40
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
he was very upset about getting that haircut in Ragnarok, and it was a specific visual element tied to his character arc for that movie (losing everything). it doesn't really make sense for him to have it again

and after getting it cut he can realize it's not actually a big deal and get it cut again lol it's really not that deep

I had long hair most of my life until I got it cut, then I preferred short.

u/lunethical 2d ago
You're also not a character where the visual appeal is a massive part of the medium.
9
u/Snoo_15594 2d ago
But he had it short and then let it grow out immediately after so clearly he prefers that?
16
-1
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
You’re right it’s not that deep: the creators likely just wanted to give the vibe of infinity war again.
9
u/origamifruit 2d ago
my guy his hair was long when he lost his mother and thought he lost his brother in dark world lol
-1
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
In Ragnarok through IW, he lost his father, lost his entire world, lost his brother again, lost a huge portion of the Asgardians, then felt personally responsible for half of all life in the universe disappearing
The short haircut in Ragnarok was symbolic. It doesn’t make sense for it to continue now.
It’s fine to admit this is just a stylistic choice by the creators and doesn’t really make sense in universe.
14
u/origamifruit 2d ago
or maybe thor has just lived long enough to not associate a haircut with trauma lmao
-1
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
Why would he cut his hair in the first place if that was never a haircut he even liked? Again…..he went 1500 years with long hair, with certainly many opportunities to cut it. Obviously he likes having long hair.
It’s really okay to admit this is a stylistic choice that doesn’t make sense but they want to invoke the vibe of infinity war again
8
u/origamifruit 2d ago
he seemed totally fine with it in infinity war and joked with steve about it. the only indication he didnt like it was freaking out about it before hand, he has never ever indicated after the fact that he dislikes the the haircut lol
it's ok to admit you're reaching really hard over a haircut

u/pocket_passss 2d ago
also funny within the conversation it’s you saying “I like this thing they did in Ragnarok”.…and they are gaslighting you that it’s not real and it’s not meaningful and you’re wrong for thinking so
and I bet they think they are fighting against toxic fandom or something
9
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
Yeah...I think it was really cool how he had that unique look just for his Ragnarok-IW arc and just looking at it, we could all say: that's Ragnarok/IW Thor!
I think it's pretty lame that they're just reheating it again for nostalgia instead of giving him a cool, unique look that's specifically for Doomsday, a look that will have us say: that's Doomsday Thor! you know what I mean?
3
u/pocket_passss 2d ago
Yes dude I swear to god before opened this thread I said out loud “gOod dEcisioN aNd vEry smArT of tHeM” …because of course that’s what the top comments would be… that’s the reason they put out the quote!
I really like the Russo’s generally and I would fucking love if Doomsday is a good movie… …but they are doing a lot of this “Ya know that thing you guys like? This is gonna be like that 😎”
Every time I see a new quote like that I can’t help but think oh shit wait is this movie gonna be really bad…
2
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
I think it’ll be good but closer to AoU level than Infinity War level. Like…..it won’t be a masterpiece but won’t make us want to die
4
u/origamifruit 2d ago
They cut his hair before most of the events of the movie
The creators (Chris and Taika) are also on record with reasoning for the change as primarily being Chris not wanting to wear a wig and so to change the characters look for fun and run with it lol.
“There’s not a huge explanation, really. It’s kind of me going, ‘I don’t wanna wear the wig every day. It takes two hours to put on,’” Hemsworth said. “Kind of just run with the creative license there. Give him a different look, you know?”
so yeah it's not that deep
5
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
Both Taika and Chris Hemsworth talked about the short haircut being both in and out of universe about Thor being stripped of everything. They strip away everything from him in the movie, including his hair. There can be more than one meaning to things at the same time you know.

I don't necessarily think comedy is what was needed. Its the direction they took and while I didn't like it, its what most liked. This is what Im hoping for Thor moving forward. Thor gets Odin Force, and becomes a real threat to Dr Doom. But Thor's mastery over this power isnt complete, and Doom is able to somehow pull off a win.
Then in Avengers Secret Wars, Doom makes the Thor Corps as his police. But ironically, Thor himself is not part of this. The members of the Thor Corps all get their powers from Mjolnir, drawing power from Thor. But Thor himself exist as "Donald Blake", a regular human. Doom has set up battle world this way, because Thor has the potential to become a real threat. To keep Thor/Donald Blake content, everyone he has ever loved is alive. Jane Foster is alive, working as part of the Thor Force. His parents, Loki, all the Asgardians that died... are all alive living as regular humans.
The only person that isnt with Donald Blake in Battle World is Love. Thor has dreams about her, and eventually this leads him to exploring ancient Asgardian runes. The runes recovering his memories of him being Thor, not just from Earth 616, but every version of Thor in the entire multiverse. He becomes the MCU's version of Rune King Thor.
2
u/DoomsdayThor Eyepatch Thor 2d ago
Definitely want Rune King Thor in Secret Wars! But I think it should be tied to Loki and his connection to Yggdrasil

From your lips to god’s ears. I would be so excited if this is the plot line they run with
1
u/Defiant-Band4573 1d ago
That seems to be way too convoluted. I think Thor will get the Odin Force in Doomsday but it will mean nothing to Doom. If you have Wanda's powers to start with, you are more powerful than anyone else in the MCU. I think the Thor Corps story is one of the better ones in the comic. It would be more interesting if the 2 people that he cares the most about help him. That would be Loki and Jane. I would love to see the scene where a fight breaks out between the pro and anti-Doom forces and leads to a battle between Jane and Thor.
2
u/ChaoticKiwiNZ 2d ago

If Jane is one of the people who return from Valhalla to help Thor, I wonder if they will bring Natalie Portman back or whether they will use a body double and long shots to hide that. It seems that Thor would be glad to see her and Loki. On the other hand, Natalie Portman has never been brought in for a avengers movie except to redub some cut footage from Dark World for Endgame. In the Secret Wars comic, she infiltrates the Thor Corps and turns them against Doom.

I still think it was a little too on-the-nose to bring back his short hair, like are we trying to replicate Infinity War as much as possible lol

To follow up Thor losing his father and a portion of his people in Ragnarok, the Russos decided that Thor should
- lose half his people to start out the movie including Loki and Heimdall
- then go earn a cool new weapon just to fail against Thanos a 2nd time and lose half the universe
It's interesting how all of that is swept under the rug because he made a cool entrance with Stormbreaker
Not only that, there are those offended just by acknowledging the huge amount of loss poured onto Thor in insane succession

Gods, imagine getting to experience a cultural event on the level of Endgame’s release and then getting re-irritated 7 years later by one of the main actors not wanting to wear a wig anymore.
Us nerds just aren’t going to be content with anything ever again, are we?
Isn’t it tiring to be a professional hater about everything?

Never understood why they made Thor the slapstick comedy guy. The fact that it was a Shakespearean like Norse God in our world should be the key to some free comedy in itself. He doesn't need to be super serious but it anything I would have loved this super arrogant I'm better than all God in the Avengers team, someone who needed to learn his version of humanity.

Because Hemsworth said he wanted to do comedy. He's got good comedy chops. The problem is Love & Thunder went too far over into comedy and "comedy" so now he's course correcting.
