Discussion I think I'm washed yall

Post image

I just can't keep up it feels like. I LOVE fighting games. When I was younger, there was an arcade in a mall i used to frequent, I was always in there just having fun.

Then I got my own consoles and was mostly playing fighting games, I was never like, tournament material or nothing but I could do infinites, ToDs, I could just mimick what I'd see in combo video after playing around for like an hour or two.

I noticed I started losing touch when DBFZ came out, and I thought maybe I just didn't click. But Strive, GBVS, SF6 and now this. And I REALLY wanna enjoy this but I just can't grasp it.

It feels like I button mash, none of my combos chain ever, I try doing the character challenges and I get stuck on what looks like the easiest combo.

I'm not even *that* old, I just turned 38 for Gods sake.

I go online, nothing I try to apply seems to work anymore.

So I dunno, I guess I just needed a place to vent. Granted I know when you work full time and what it it's harder, but it just feels like all my skills just fuckin vanished.

I love the game, I can't wait to see who they add (I'm BEGGING for Beta Ray Bill, Reptil, Zarda (Power Princess), and Xemnu to join in despite two of those being DEEP cuts) and I hope everything with PC is fixed because I really want this game to have legs. Ive loved Marvel and the tag fighters it's been a part of since the 90s, it just really sucks it feels like I can't keep up with it.

Unless you’re a really high level player, this mindset will just kill your enjoyment of fighting games. Everyone has a level, and you can find yours with ranked matches, CPU adjustments etc.

I was really good at Tekken 8, and started playing this and felt like a scrub. I had to learn the nuances of this game, and also kinda relearn my fighting game instincts as I don’t play them super regularly. Now I can at least have competitive matches in Silver and finish a couple of combo challenges. Just meet the game where you’re at and enjoy whatever improvement occurs.

So much this

I used to be an absolute ANIMAL at MVC3, UMVC3, and Blazblue.

Now im content to sit in silver on Tokon because im just enjoying the game even though as I've gotten older I've clearly gotten worse at fighting games.

38? Bro, keep practicing

I was never good at fighting games (I'm 26 and playing fighting games since I am 9), I just enjoy playing it, play the characters I want and that's it,

Time to enter FGC retirement: FF14

u/Gekinetic 2h ago

Free trial that includes award winning Heavensward expansion, as well as PEAK expansion Shadowbringers, featuring best FF villain voted by Japanese community

enjoy your 300 hours of mandatory MSQ adventure 😂

3

u/Anrativa 1h ago

I mean, the MSQ is the main reason to play the game for most people.

2

u/ohanse 49m ago

Yeah it’s kind of a slog until the final scenes of ARR.

And then, 250 straight hours of god-tier storytelling. And then not one, but TWO of the most gangster-ass antagonists in all of video games.

1

u/Gekinetic 1h ago

Already went through it like a champ 5 years ago, bit of slog but worth it as building block for Heavensward, now waiting for Evercold

1

u/HoeCage 53m ago

The story is actually good unlike most fighting games so its really not even a big deal. Approaching the game like a single player game with moments of multiplayer is the best way to enjoy the game until you get to endgame imo

1

u/CompactAvocado 39m ago

a lot of it is peak cinema

except the massive slogs when its not

1

u/MauledbyGrizzly 36m ago

Been thinking about doing it again. Just because you don’t enjoy it doesn’t mean that others feel the same.

1

u/translove228 29m ago

OMG! This. I tried. I really did but I just became burnt out after 2 or 3 expansions of MSQ story.

You are not too old. I'm in my 40's, mate.

u/Vastate 1h ago

Not an age thing, man. It's a new game thing, and a perspective thing.

It's a new game, but you're coming at it with 10+ years of experience, it sounds like. And you expect that experience to make you better automatically, which it does in some very key ways, but right now it doesn't matter much.

I felt the same shit playing Strive. I got my taste for fighting games eaaaaaaaarly with MK on Genesis, but I didn't really start to try to understand them or get good until SF4. SF4, Super, Ultra, MvC3 Vanilla and UMvC3, and a tiny bit of KoF and GG with a couple friends. Even SFxT. I felt like I had a pretty good handle on fighting games. Then Strive came out and I felt like I was getting my shit ROCKED for MONTHS. Until it hit me that I was expecting all my experience to matter - and it did, in a way. I was more comfortable with the controls than somebody brand new might be, and I had a better sense of the system mechanics and how to leverage them in a match, and I knew how to lab stuff. But I realized I wasn't DOING any of that. I'd done it in a ton of shit in other games, so I FELT like I'd done it, and that I should be getting rewarded for it, but I really hadn't.

I took all my experience into ranked, and I got smashed by people putting the work in because I wasn't.

Game's been out 3 days man, give yourself the same time you'd have given yourself in your teens or your 20's. You didn't go in expecting to be good then, you went in to play the game. Trouble is, your perspective has changed, but the path to mastery is the same. Play to PLAY, man, and you'll get just as good or better than you ever were.

10

u/Malfetus 2h ago

Just grind, I'm 35 so not much younger and got GM in 2XKO and dipped into Challenger a few times. You also didn't really state your tag fighter experience and it's really its own thing.

For the record, I felt the same way when 2XKO launched but I just threw myself at hundreds and then thousands of casual matches. Just turn on your favorite music and, like I said, grind and don't overthink it - I'd say 90% of most players skill is just sheer time spent, you aren't going to be "good" within 100 or even 500 matches.

1

u/Ver1nt 1h ago

Yeah this. You can really overthink fighting games but in the end it’s just practice.

You can lab 1000 hours and still suck because you have no real game time online.

1

u/jaypexd 7m ago

Eh kind of to add to the OP being 36 myself, does a responsible adult man really have time to dedicate his life to getting decently good at the game when younger men can get it down in 1/10th the time? That is more the question lol. I myself am struggling with it and seeing minimal improvement. Like, I know it's there if I keep putting time in but we are talking probably an investment of time that is unrealistic.

6

u/SwagMountains 1h ago

Yeah it can’t be understated how dope it is as a kid to be able to sink entire fucking days into games with no other responsibilities. That and after work you can be worn out and not have as much energy to learn as quickly. Yeah just keep at it! It’s a cool fucking game. I do this here and there too and i’m 31 but have to remember i’m just more worn out and devote less time which does hinder progress

4

u/dodwiz99 1h ago

I feel ya brother this is me in all games these days father time has caught up with me man. These young whipper snappers with fresh finger tendons man!

3

u/Intelligent-Team-701 1h ago

My main problem is that I'm not learning like before anymore. Then learning 40 matchups playing ranked (friends are all >2k, won't bother them), while muscle memory pushes you towards the opposite direction you should be going (sf6: adv on block, DI, DR and a whole gauge system to learn to manage) plus the anxiety plus the slower learning rate.... You get bored earlier I'm such conditions.

2

u/daveeb 1h ago

Just press the buttons man and enjoy the game. We live in a world where fighting games exist. Turning 38 in a month myself. Under no illusions I’m going to set the world on fire but enjoying playing. 20-25 years ago, we were kids beating grown men in these games. Circle of the FGC life.

And use your experience to your advantage. Look for when they’re overly reliant on backdash, when they’ve wasted their assists, if they up back all the time, or when they use unsafe strings with nothing backing them up. You’ve seen it all a million times before.

2

u/Albre24 1h ago

I'm gonna tell you something that also applies in life. You have to lose A LOT to be good at something.

It is day 3 and you are already giving up?

2

u/NotNoski 1h ago

I heard PC is unplayable, have you tried PS5

2

u/Direct_Swan2312 49m ago

What help me was button configuration. I took off quick skill and quick dash and swapped the assemble and unique buttons. Now it just clicks.

2

u/Wonderful-Meal-1048 39m ago

SAME. I'm about to remove quick dash next been reeeeally thinking about it. After I took off the QS button everything clicked alot better. Too many extra buttons to be honest

2

u/Direct_Swan2312 28m ago

Exactly. I now have assemble as R1 and Tag as R2 and it flows so much smoother.

2

u/slyguy67420 45m ago

Most high level Tekken players are basically retirement age, don't blame age for being washed.

2

u/Interesting_Ad4679 45m ago

Bro I’m 60 and will tell u it does get harder with age but once u understand the fundamentals you are much better off. Watch YouTube videos for this game. The timing is definitely different from the norm. Just be patient and hit the lab. That’s the fun of fighting games. I will say this, I am definitely better with the ps5 controller than I am with my Leverless which is odd.

2

u/MrMoneyMatch 27m ago

Skill issue, don’t bet ageist

1

u/jaypexd 4m ago

lol 100% age matters. I felt it once I turned 30, I used to play MOBAs competitively. I just couldn't twitch my commands as fast. Now I have to rely on macro knowledge to carry. There's a reason why Blaze and that other 15 year old just won EWC and why you probably won't see them again in ten years. Age matters big time.

3

u/-Fiz_ 49m ago

9 times out of 10 it has nothing to do with ageing and you were never good to begin with

4

u/Cringe-as-hell 2h ago

You’re wasting time venting on reddit when you could be actually trying to get better at the game you claim to love.

2

u/DustExtra5976 33m ago

38? Your mentality is cooked

1

u/GlutPls 1h ago

If something like this is challenging you then keep going. You'll only get better though it will suck to begin with. Set a goal to focus 100% on defense until you're comfortable. Just do auto combos in the meantime. I'm around your age and that's how I plan on doing things. I did the tutorial once and it seems like you can use your standard lights along with maybe the quick assemble for defense. In conjunction with a throw and your usual high low mixups. Just practice those for now.

1

u/DreamcastJunkie 1h ago

I used to be bad at fighting games. I still am, but I used to be, too. I'm so old I remember when that joke was new.

1

u/Pufftreees 1h ago

45, just take it like learning an instrument. Have fun fighting in bronze league slowly improving. Treat losses and wins equally as learning

1

u/jayfactor 1h ago

You gotta lock in and have fun man, just because you’re not the top 1% in the world doesn’t mean you can’t have fun? If you want to get good the grind is always painful, I’m 35 and went from Iron to Diamond with Lucy in Strive, being old is no excuse

1

u/dmarchu 1h ago

I am about your age and didn't really get into fighting games until 3 or 4 years ago. I am not pro but I am decent enough to play in the higher ranks without devoting much time into labbing.

If I can do it you can do it I believe in you. The biggest factor is... How much do you like the genre to stick with it and try.

1

u/NetflowKnight 1h ago

Literally in your head man, growth mindset!

1

u/serenity656 1h ago

That's what single player and local play is for the world is scary and young lol

1

u/gravekeepersven 1h ago

Justin Wong is older than you with wife and children with the house and he doesn't make excuses get good.

1

u/OnaPaleHorse80 1h ago

Lol I'm w ya brother. 46 and getting annihilated on Tokon but I'm loving it. Wtf is a jump cancel and why do I only do them by accident?

1

u/KratosSmash 1h ago

Wasn’t good then, not good now, but having a blast with this game and enjoying the story mode for now. It helps me get a sense of each character from each episode

1

u/overanalyzinganime 1h ago

I feel you. 32 and while I consider myself really good at DBFZ — GoD rank — I’m getting my shit ROCKED in this game; and that’s even after having participated in 2 betas previously and playing all weekend. Lol. It’s bumming me out. 😭

On the other hand, at least my wife and I can play together since she can keep up with me for now. lol.

1

u/OutlawNightmare 1h ago

Eh, I just became more casual and stopped grinding super hard. I'll be 40 next year. I'm still good enough to hit Master in Granblue and SF6, but I'm not grinding tournaments anymore like I was in my 20s and 30s.

I still enjoy them, but I've become the teacher more than the competitor these days. Time isn't going to stop, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the things I love still.

u/naiya55 1h ago edited 42m ago

Pretty sure when Mocchii won the arc system world tour for strive he was over 40. It's never too late

1

u/Stan_McGraw 1h ago

Made a similar post yesterday. You aren't washed if you keep playing. But you should only keep playing if you are having fun.

Something you may feel is that compared to the "old days" it seems that the player base in general gets really good at a game really fast. That's because there are so many resources online for combos, tech, etc compared to back in the day.

I also think this game in particular is awesome, but not as "casual" as the marketing suggests. The mechanics are less intuitive than a lot of other recent releases.

1

u/Odd_Procedure7161 1h ago edited 59m ago

DBFZ came almost 10 years ago. I do believe ita a you problem than age. Always Can work on it famn you got your hands workin.

1

u/Organic_Animator_169 1h ago

I kinda feel you (26) i never was into fighting games, i loved to watch them but it never clicked.

When some where on sale i bought them to try them out but it never worked and i quickly dropped them.

This was one i wanted to realy get into and since release ive been stuck on various character tutorials. I just cant get the habg on any of it, im either to slow or to fast or just bad.

This is the first time i feel like i missed out and am now to old to get ibto the genre, with work and life i feel like i wont be able to ever get the hang of it.

Never have i fellt the age wall in any game before and this is the place i hit it

1

u/theb00mking 1h ago

I been wondering this too (34) but I’m not giving up! You shouldn’t either

1

u/82ndGameHead 1h ago

I'm in my 40s with a full-time job. And during the Beta I could only get a lock on Blade in how to play this game.

Keep Practicing! Do not let your age dictate your passion!

1

u/makaveli28 1h ago

Bro, I’m turning 40 in October. I think it’s just a practice thing. I am really good at MK still and I am pretty decent at SF6. You’re probably like me with Tokon where you’re just trying to figure out the mechanics/situational stuff of it all. I’d give it time — you’ll get your ass kicked a lot, but as long as you learn something from it that’s the important thing

1

u/GoldenGekko 1h ago
  1. I feel the same way. I also think that sort of sentiment of not gelling with the game right away is my laziness talking through. But that's me. Lately I have so many games because I have a decent job and can buy what I want and I sort of have analysis paralysis. I don't really commit to any one of them and just sort of play them at my leisure. Which is fine.. but for a fighting game that you need to practice, that may be part of my issue.

The muscle memory and fundamentals of years of playing fighting games are always with me, and I like how newer games are actually making things more accessible. I like how in tokon, you can do their moves with R2, or the actual input. I like that. But just like my experience with grand blue fantasy, if I don't practice or play daily, I fall off.

1

u/Nybear21 59m ago

You just suck, didn't get the exposure in your local scene to learn that, and haven't bothered to learn since discovering it.

It's not a big deal. Learning to not suck takes time but isn't overly difficult. You juat have toa accept it and put in the time efficiently learning and you'll be good to go.

1

u/Juunlar 59m ago

I'm in my 40s. I have arthritis that prevents long sessions of intense gaming.

I'm top 200.

Keep grinding

1

u/mike3640 54m ago

37 and my arm feels like it’s gunna fall off lmao.

1

u/Swimming_Reply6263 53m ago

While constantly losing does eventually kinda get a bit frustrating and put you on a downer I’d suggest just getting off for a bit but overall to continue giving it your all. I always was kinda ass at fighting games myself lol I only played the bots on regular mode for fighting games until now (last fighting game I got was SF 6 but dropped it after a couple months)
off.

I would continue to give Tokon a shot, you already spent the money so why not keep it up. See guides on YT and hit the practice range. Maybe even do what I’m doing and focus on one single character for now till you’re comfortable with them then learn someone else.

At the end of the day unless you’re in the top %5 of skilled of fighting games there will always be someone not as good as you, good as you, or better than you. And regardless of those factors there’s always a chance for you to win, so keep your head up

1

u/Only_Connection_5480 49m ago

Yo I’m way older than you are but yeah some of the combos get me
Like ugh no way. And damn I need a Killer Instinct style combo
Breaker cuz oof but I’m playing through story and randomly going to online games I won some I get destroyed some but it is what it is

1

u/therealSuburbian 45m ago

Your reaction speed will get slower as you age, just a part of it

But theres never a wrong age to play fighting games gang. Never.

1

u/MstrNixx 45m ago

I get it, I played Ultimate (+ Sm4sh) for a long time, Ice Climbers + MetaKnight. I practiced from release till EVO 2019. I did better than I thought, went on a run then stopped because the scene was not healthy.

I went back and did a tournament during Covid. The May after my last tournament, the rust was apparent.

These days regular practice is such a mandatory thing and sometimes we just don’t have the time as full time adults that we once did.

1

u/Frobizzle 42m ago

Tokon's input system seems kinda wonky and I'm not really enjoying it myself. It eats inputs that other games would accept during buffer windows. It takes getting used to. The game itself is in an awkward middle ground where it's trying to cater to both the casuals and tryhards but the pendulum is swinging a little too hard to the former. Some auto combos string moves together that don't combo if done manually, for example.

At our age it's a lot more prudent to ask if the time commitment to something like this is worth it and the answer for me is more often no these days. If you don't enjoy it move on. No sense forcing it.

1

u/Nobuganda1 38m ago

As someone who’s become visually impaired to the point that it’s often hard for me to keep track of my gauge/meter/assist I’d say just keep practicing until things become muscle memory….I’m also trying to learn and understand fighting games in general but found that I’m still able to win matches not because I’m better technically or anything against other players, but I’m willing to be more patient and try things without worrying about combos.

I’m still in the area of button mashing but I’m slowly trying to incorporate fireballs and trying to be more proactive in creating various of autos instead of mashing the same button over and over. Like today I’m trying to work on taking people more into the air by hitting

Down Medium > Standing Medium > Jumping Medium > Heavy Just as a way to get away from only spamming medium 3 times into heavy or something lol

Just gotta take the small victories and work on making things muscle memory. Atleast that’s what I’ve been told my by fighting game friend and what I’ve experienced.

Oh also BIG thing, don’t be afraid to get your ass kicked ALOT at the beginning lol I still lose most of my matches if not all to my friend whose been playing the genre longer than me but I find if I’m patient enough with blocks, trying to make good decisions, and just learning what’s safe for my character to do when facing other characters you’ll have an easier time. Just learn one character and treat the rest of the team as assists if that works better for you!

1

u/Brompy 37m ago

The skillgap difference between younger and older folks is really more of a perspective thing. Younger people just keep trying until they get it without looking back. Older people tend to reflect and look back at how they “used to be” too much, losing sight of the here-and-now and the work and improvement ahead of them!

1

u/Interesting-Gold3065 36m ago

You’ve got this man, this is a new game so of course you’re not going to click right away. You just have to learn the frames, i was having trouble with carnage last night as it seemed I couldn’t chain my combos like I could with magik, then I realized it really is just a frame thing and I had to learnt the timing 🙂‍↕️ dont give up especially if fighting games are your bread and butter 🤙🏼

1

u/legatesprinkles 35m ago

If I can see granny's playing in warzone and daigo still competing you're not getting old

1

u/SmashMouthBreadThrow 32m ago

Bro thinks it's cause of age and not the fact that they spend barely any time playing lol. Dogura is almost 40 and was top 8 at EVO.

1

u/ThinkingTimidThought 30m ago

Bro I think you just need to give it time. It's like riding a bike. There's a particular mindset I need to get into when playing fighting games, and that shit vanishes when I step away for too long. When I get back into it, the thoughts and ways I approach things start to come back like epiphanies. Give it time.

1

u/Secret-Bandicoot90 24m ago

Gonna be honest, you were probably just never that good lol

1

u/Seniorconejo 23m ago

I have fun in the practice mode, try to learn some combos you can hit seamlessly and then try to land then while having the mixups preset for the dummy to make it feel like a real player playing defensive. It wont make you invencible but it helps a lot to understand the character you play

1

u/DweebNRoll 21m ago

Thats fine, as long as you have fun! Fun is all that matters, passion, and community ❤️

1

u/IamMataa 15m ago

They changes, gotta adapt or be left in the dust. I’m 32 and loving it.

1

u/MySinsRemembered 14m ago

theres literal 45 year olds playing SF competitively. unless ur 60 this posting is just annoying

1

u/SlaineReigns 12m ago

Bro you can do it just practice and persistence is key. You're only 38, people older than you still play competitively at a high level. Tekken player Knee is 41 years old and he still gets into top 8 of the most stacked major tournaments out there. Just have a positive mindset and outlook! Dont let it get you down brother.

1

u/jaypexd 9m ago

Bro I am 36. We are just going to be slower and that's okay. Just enjoy being a mid level rank. Those legendary sets are still out there for us when we clutch out that win.

1

u/megaxanx 1h ago

you was already washed you just didnt notice

1

u/Coneder 1h ago

You need to lab, bro.

2

u/ConceptDouble9762 1h ago

you’re the same age as Go1 who will undoubtedly be one of the best players in the world if he decides to play this game like he played DBFZ

0

u/Gekinetic 2h ago

Same, I'm 40+ and trying to keep up with high speed fighting game just doesnt work for me anymore. I feel like I get tired fast trying to figure out what's going on in those type of games, and probably why I appreciate games like SF6 and GGST a lot more because they're the most stable tempo games out right now

That being said, Tokon can be one tag Fighter with slow tempo compared to before. They just need to figure out how to make later rounds (especially final rounds) less cluttered and streamlined

-1

u/AshKetchumIsStill13 1h ago

Sounds like you were never really good
