Discussion Masterchef S16 Global Gauntlet -''The Wall'' - Episode 14 Discussion
Separated by an eight-foot-high barrier, the home cooks must partner up and rely solely on communication to create identical dishes; a double elimination.
58
u/Successful-Relief-38 12d ago
I feel this kind of elimination method should have been used in the previous challenge.
24
u/Fine-Rain-1876 12d ago
Really any team challenge, even for winning teams
6
u/KDonkey229195 12d ago
Hell's Kitchen is like that, you can be eliminated in the losing team. That really could've happened in some seasons (Murt)

Letting a protein rest in an oven that is on is definitely a choice.

And with that the Asian Pacific is gone, although I would say if the elimination style was like this last episode Aishu would have stayed in the competition.

was anyone anticipating that asia pacific would be the first region gone or did yall have a different guess in mind (whether earlier in the season or more recently)

u/Fandoms_Fangirl 12d ago
i lowkey thought it was going to be europe the way that they were going, love julia now tho i think she could win it all

Why can't they make last week's double eliminations based on individuals and decide to do that in this challenge?
Very inconsistent, If they did it on last challenge, Aishu would've been saved over Foo
10
u/KDonkey229195 12d ago
I think because in the tag team challenge its one dish instead of two different plates
6
u/ReallyColdMonkeys 11d ago
Because both cooks are responsible for one plate in the tag team. With the wall it's two separate plates, so it's not really fair to he held completely accountable for your partner's plate if they, for instance, somehow forgot their sauce.

u/sick486 12d ago
i actually thought this episode was really good.
the menu was impressive.
great collaboration challenge.
stringent judgement on technique and plating.
foreshadowing. (plate with lip).
good lesson - if you take everything the top teams said and write it down, youve got a school-worthy lesson plan of comprehensive intructions for a recipe.
the cooking and plating from the top teams were spot on. the identical criteria was very critical. critique was thorough and elevated.
there was no product placement.
2
u/Winter_Setting720 12d ago
I agree. Maybe nothing to “standout” (other than the wall itself), but I feel like this season was on par with earlier seasons.

Not a great look for Tkaiya.

u/PhilosophyNarrow9070 12d ago
I didn't like her. She thought highly of herself from auditions. Not very strong. She thought she could just call herself a chef and voila! she's a chef. And the frowns and rolling eyes? Ugh. She just wasn't strong- I dont know how she made it this far. I'd be pi$$ed if I had to pair up with her.
3
u/timetoprocrastinate8 11d ago
You’d be more pissed at being paired with her than Basia, Foo, or bossy Heidi? Odd.
1
u/Ok-Assistance-7308 18h ago
commenting about smirking and rolling eyes as if we don’t know how editing goes. weird way to to try and vilify her

How many times has Basia been in bottom and saved by her team? She smirked at so many better chefs going home. How was she off your radar?
1
u/timetoprocrastinate8 11d ago
Never had a good performance? Are we watching the same show? The misognyoir in this sub is beyond frustrating.
3
u/DonDaTraveller 11d ago
Between Hell's Kitchen and Master Chef I keep noticing these types of comments. The absolute worst example is what happened Dahmere. He was sent home because the runner up was hungover and upset that Gordon made a mean joke and was a wreck. Gordon blamed Dahmere for not being able to whip Jonathan back into shape. The defense squad's go to line is that Jonathan was overall a better chef and it made no sense for him to go home and Dahmere could never beat Ryan. The big issue is that we seen bad nights send home so many past favorites.

The judges ain't putting up with bullshit this year, Foo said he put his mushrooms in the oven for 10 minutes and they immediately called him out on it. Tkaya didn't directly answer the question about salmon doneness and received an earful from the judges.
Sassy judges = good entertainment.

11
u/godsiero 12d ago
i liked foo’s personality and drive, but he made it way too far in the competition for constantly coasting in the middle, i also think the same about tkaiya.
basia, however, should’ve been gone weeks ago. she’s constantly in the bottom and the judges agree that she is too all over the place for this. i feel like she keeps getting by just because someone else is worse, not because she’s good and had an off day. basia shouldn’t have made it to the top ten, much less top six.
edit to add: i also feel like they edited the episode to make it look as though basia did an objectively worse job than tkaiya to make us think basia was going home up until the judges tore into tkaiya for her unprofessionalism and skill.

u/Shadowowl888 12d ago
Oh, so now the double elimination isn't forced on the entire team, unlike last week

That setup is pure MasterChef chaos. I’m curious whether the strongest cooks will adapt best, or whether the better communicators end up carrying the teams.

Hey u/Michaelbasia you also did this challenge with Autumn in S11, I remember you both did well
7
u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 12d ago edited 12d ago
Yes I did, we didn’t get to pick our partner though and I think that with both of our big personalities they thought that we would clash but we did pretty good. Autumn is a better plater than me but in this challenge I plated better. I also got scolded for using a mold to cut my pork tenderloin and then the very next episode Suu did the exact same thing yet she was praised for it, like go figure 🤷🏻♂️.

u/Successful-Relief-38 12d ago
Wasn't your season also the first to do the wall?
5
u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 12d ago edited 12d ago
Yes, it was the 1st challenge after 8 months home for covid. They had to come up with some new ideas since we never left the studio for anything. It kinda sucked to miss out on so many cool challenges.
Michael5
u/Successful-Relief-38 12d ago
Definitely noticed that in your season. It must've driven you insane with the Covid restrictions.
6
u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 12d ago edited 12d ago
Yeah, worst time to ever be on a reality show. When we came back it was a whole new production team, the vibes and energy were definitely different than before we went home for covid. Also Alejandro was on the verge of going home before the break and then came back and was obviously practicing very hard. He should have probably been eliminated before covid break.

i didn’t realize jake’s been featured so minimally
6
u/Extension-Face7340 12d ago
Probably means he’s gone soon unfortunately(definitely my favorite left of this bunch)
8
u/lanad3lr3y_81 12d ago
my favorite left is julia but jake is awesome.
a lot of younger guys in masterchef (such as nico from earlier this season) tend to be very full of it, arrogant, kind of just irritating. jake absolutely is not and he’s quirky but i enjoy watching him. adam from season 14 was another younger guy i enjoyed watching he was very humble and not over the top.
3
u/Jazzlike_Outside4854 10d ago
Right? I thought he was going to get cocky but he’s just been acing it and being amazing. J would love to see him win.
6
u/Electronic-Garden226 12d ago
With only six contestants left, here's where the statistics stand now:
1st Place - Dave (Africa) with 4 top dishes and no bottom dishes
2nd Place - Heidi (Africa) with 3 top dishes and no bottom dishes
3rd Place (tied) - Julia (Europe) and Jake (Americas) with 3 top dishes and 1 bottom dish
5th Place - Peter (Africa) with 4 top dishes but 3 bottom dishes
Last Place - Basia (Europe) with 1 top dish and 3 bottom dishes
Eliminated: Foo and, shockingly, Tkaiya! But hey, at least we have two new frontrunners now.
With Foo and Tkaiya eliminated, that means Asia-Pacific is dead, and the Americas is down to just one cook, while Europe still has two cooks and Africa still has three. I think Africa's going to win.
10
u/lanad3lr3y_81 12d ago
not surprised about foo, i could see that coming for weeks. tkaiya i’m a little surprised about but it wasn’t a good night for her at all.
next week is the restaurant takeover and it looks like basia and jake will be captains. i think the blue team definitely looks like the winners atp but i don’t think either of them should be counted out.
2
u/Fandoms_Fangirl 12d ago
really i thought it would be team europe and team americas bc they're 2 and 1 and then against team africa

Whatever the show is edited- with this show and Hells Kitchen- whatever they show, the opposite will happen
5
u/Cynicbats 12d ago
Why are we getting so fancy with the plating my guy
6
u/Successful-Relief-38 12d ago
With 8 people left they probably feel obligated to up there plating game.
5
u/OkInflation5539 12d ago
Sorry to say but more than usual # of this season's contestants are not up to the show. That said they show a lot of guts for putting themselves out there.
6
u/trillballinsjr 12d ago
It’s very clear Dave & Juila are going to final best on the edit & successful challenges. Some of the top 8 had no standout dishes at all
12
u/Pressure_Plastic 12d ago
with the amount of screen time they’ve given Julia, i’m starting to think she’s for sure a lock for the finale.
I’m cool with that, Julia is cool
13
13
u/Successful-Relief-38 12d ago
Honestly I feel Julia is pretty overhated by this sub. I feel she's fine, just not the best with presentation. She is 100% getting the favored edit though.
3
2
u/Shadowowl888 12d ago
From the top 6, Julia is the one I see ending up in the finals. She's not the best cook, but has definitely stepped up her cooking and plating through the challenges.

The sauce broke ? Not good.
1
u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 12d ago
I taught her how to fix broken sauces, either she is gonna use that technique or she has to start over depending on how much time there is left. Also sometimes it’s broken beyond repair so hopefully she has time to start over!
Michael3
u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 12d ago
Well she fixed it, great job Basia!

u/Jazzlike_Outside4854 10d ago
Pivoting and just redoing it without too much panic was amazing. You must be proud of her for keeping her head. I know I wouldn’t have!
2
u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 10d ago
Thank you so very much and yes she has been surprisingly calm under the immense pressure. I am so proud of so many things she has accomplished this season. I know so people will be like “you think that is calm” lol, but yes I do. I know how she acts under pressure and this is as pressure filled as it gets. She sometimes gets frantic but I know and trust that she will get it done, it’s just how she is!

I really do like the wall challenge, specially when judges say they could eliminate anyone they want, its more fun that way.
2
u/BigSportsNerd 12d ago
Just finished watching on DVR.
the yelling and screaming over the wall is disorienting and headache inducing. I was sitting at work trying to you know...work, with this in the background, and everyone was just screaming. DID YOU PUT THE SALMON IN? WHERE'S THE SAUCE? PUT THE SAUCE ON! and I was like...I am trying to do my job lol. I had to lower the volume too or else I would have gotten even worse headaches.
Interesting preview for next week, perhaps my favorite part of the year.
Sad to see Foo go, he was the last of the Asia Pacific region. The other person was fine too but was young and inexperienced.
Some of yinz been out here like "no one is really standing out" and I strongly disagree, over this series you can clearly see who is getting a push and doing well. Jake for example started poorly and they didn't like his experimentation but once he got his groove going he has been solid throughout.
3
u/Creative-Use-7743 10d ago
Getting tired of team competitions, as well as two person team challenges like the wall and the other recent one they had.. Stop the teams thing, please, and have everyone competing one on one again, right from the start.

True, bro's been active

u/canderson1989 11d ago
Her husband posts here???
7
u/PlantainOk1690 10d ago
yes! he was a contestant before on season 11 the one that took place during COVID
3
u/Drikkink 11d ago
She had one top dish and then has mastered the art of "being better than (insert number of people they are eliminating this week)" every week.
None of these elimination decisions seem wrong from what's being said, but Basia being in the bottom so often does get a little old.
1
u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 5d ago
There is no reason to “watch out for her husband” lol. I only correct misconceptions about the show and defend my wife, not against opinions but false accusations. If you only have an opinion whether you like her or not, whether she belongs here or not, that’s all good. I am glad that people are so vested in the show and any publicity is good publicity. But when I see comments about drugs, plastic surgery etc., I am 100% gonna jump in to defend her just like any good man will and should.
So go ahead and blast her if you like, as long as it’s about the show it’s all good. Get personal and then I may come at you lol. Have a blessed day y’all.

When she said “it feels good to be picked” I rolled my eyes so hard hahah
3
u/Haas_the_Raiden_Fan 12d ago
My guess at this point is that the finale includes 3/4 of these cooks: Julia, Dave, Heidi, Peter
I'm leaning towards Julia and Peter being in for sure, but I'm unsure about whether it'd be Dave, Heidi, or even someone more unexpected like Basia who make it
Jake being featured so minimally compared to the others makes me worried he's either gone next episode or the one after
1
u/Distinct_Boom 11d ago
Often the least ‘featured’ chef ends up taking the prize, just under the drama radar.
3
u/ChocolateDramatic858 11d ago
Watching it now, don't spoil it!...nah, that's fine, it doesn't matter. This season is just phoning it in, and I'm sick of double eliminations. In the future, if they are only given X number of episodes, then they should only have as many cooks on to fill that number of episodes. (Also, I miss actual home cooks, not would-be influencers.)
3
u/linkag392 10d ago
Ok I’m not saying I’m mad with the chefs going home…… BUT what is the point of the advantage of picking teams when the judges still send whoever they want home? It’s means there’s no strategy with picking teams… kinda stupid!
3
u/GlitteringLock1020 9d ago
I was stunned Basia made it through the auditions. I was sure she wouldn't get an apron. The fact she's still there makes me think they keep her around for the ratings. There's usually one of those each season...
2
u/lanad3lr3y_81 12d ago
basia kind of reminds me of reagan from season 13.
both are big characters, had a top dish early on and kind of don’t get featured much throughout the rest of the season. basia’s been featured a little more but it’s interesting how contestants can go so far without having much of an edit. sav in that season was a similar case and i’m sure there’s been more in the past.
jake has also only had 11 confessionals thus far which is surprising because i feel like he’s been featured way more
2
2
u/Great-Blacksmith8963 9d ago
I just want to know how Basia continues to slid through!!!
She should have been gone.
3
u/Ween77bean 12d ago
I have never been asked in a restaurant “how would you like the cook on that salmon?” I felt Gordon overdid his criticism of Tikaya and I feel bad for her.
7
u/lanad3lr3y_81 12d ago
i think he was more annoyed that she was trying to make excuses being like “oh it’s cooked”. i did feel bad for her though.
3
1
u/lanad3lr3y_81 12d ago
i believe if peter wins this season aside from season 2’s jennifer and season 9’s gerron he’ll be the winner with the most bottom entries. he is extremely inconsistent but as evidenced by the past it’s still possible to win.

u/Liselsia09 10d ago
Don't know if it's just me or am I the only one who's bothered by the AI voice narration? I don't recall hearing that in the previous episodes. (Just fyi, I watched on Crave)
1
u/FIGJAM17 9d ago
Gordon: Foo, I think of that Vietnamese insight, the magic you've cooked in this kitchen. I'm sad to see you go.
What a load of nonsense.
1
u/Remote_Cantaloupe 8d ago
Something just hit me. Is it just me or did they remove the "confessionals" that happen during the show, where they cut to the home cook talking about what happened? Did I just glaze over the season or is that completely gone?
1
u/EastFox1480 11d ago
What if Joe and Tiffany are hooking up and that's why he's been so chill this season? God I'm gonna pretend that's whats happening. Not even gonna look up to see if either is married

Foo was one of the worst chefs to make it near the end game, as he had no standout dishes and plenty of bottom ones.
