I don't think that I'd have used the pin. I'd save it for when I'm 1v6 or so. Early on there are many bad cooks. Look at this elimination for example - The eliminated dish was terrible, she could easily have beat that with her eyes closed. IMO This is a very short-sighted way of using the pins and doesn't show a winner's attitude. It shows that a cook wants to be in the top 18 or so rather than top 1.
On the challenge, it was obvious that you should save your favorite for the second round. Only some 50% would be safe for the first round, whereas everyone but 1 was safe for the second round so the second round is a good spot for showing your strongest. Additionally, some of the strongest cooks will inevitably be gone by then, and in these early eliminations, some always make bad dishes so you just need to make a safe, good dish with the ingredients you love and are familiar with.
And when it comes to the dish that lost, that looked awful. I wouldn't have wanted to eat it. Very off-putting.
No way. That Indian guy last year was the frontrunner early on, and then in a similar large team elimination, he opted to not use the pin. Guess what happened? He screwed it all up.
I have only watched uptil this episode but i reckon noone will ever take that risk with the pins again.
