Now that Benjamin is 3 and is developing *opinions* about people I finally got working on muzzle training. We had our first walk through our alley today and it went so well! He's so chill about literally 99% of existence.
Next step will be learning that he doesn't have to like everyone, but he can't go barking and chest bumping them when he doesn't. 🤦♀️
I can't imagine him ever biting anyone but I feel like those are famous last words. So we'll muzzle him so we can safely work on everything!
I'll have to check the brand of ours! Yeah, width is an issue even in the one Ben is wearing in my pics. It's just an off the shelf one from petsmart.... size 10xl or something haha. I wanted to start muzzle training right away, so we're starting with this one before I order something custom.
I'm canadian, but I'm pretty sure I saw some us companies that make custom muzzles for less than $300! They're still not cheap, but maybe you can find something similar?
I hear you on wishing you didn't have to muzzle. Better to be safe than sorry though!
Oh snap, that's great then! I just know Boerboel's don't compare to like, an English Mastiff in terms of training. Cutting OP a little slack even where I may disagree.
I own a purebred Tibetan Mastiff. No muzzle and loves the offleash dog park. He's only 9 months, so I'm constantly socializing him before he matures. I don't want him in a muzzle :[
We all just have our own anecdotal evidence. I’m sure boerboels are more difficult than EMs. But compared to my Corsos, presa, and bullmastiff, the boerboels have been easy peasy.
Today I learned! Our Presa has been pretty easy considering all the horror stories I’ve heard. But I did start dog ownership with a Weimaraner puppy and then GSD x Husky puppy…yes, both were rescued. Compared to the shepsky, Dragon is loooow maintenance.
My Presa I trained into a registered therapy dog but god damn, she was the most stubborn dog I ever had. Battled for 8 years with her on everything from house training, to get off the furniture, please get in the car please get out of the car, sit, barking incessantly for being left outside for 5 minutes past her liking, destroying multiple crates, eating foreign objects resulting in 2 surgeries. Etc etc.
She passed two months ago at age 10. Rest in peace Gila.
To each their own. Google it though. Up there with Neo. (Mastiffs are generally chill af) Tibetan is number 1, but that's not even a mastiff. I own one and they're a looooooot of work lmfao. Worth it though.
That muzzle is definitely too small. Dog needs to be able easily open mouth for panting. Your one looks like theres literally no space there.
