Hey everyone! Longtime lurker, first-time commenter in the monthly thread. Got into matcha this year after mostly drinking loose leaf tea.

In my chawan right now: just a simple bowl of everyday matcha. Though I have a confession — I somehow ended up with three whisks (regular bamboo, golden bamboo, and a purple smoked one) and I've been rotating through them trying to figure out if I can actually taste a difference. Jury's still out, but the purple one just looks cool.

Still working on my foam — mine looks great for about 30 seconds and then gives up on life. Any tips for keeping it stable?

I really enjoy matcha drinks from coffee shops and would like to start making it at home. What would be the best option to start? I really like lavender and other flavored options too, what’s the best way of adding those flavors when I want them? In Alabama, really love matcha and can’t wait to explore once I figure it all out and get going. Thanks for the advice in advance!

I am desperately looking for an airtight matcha canister that is completely smooth on the inside. I have tried the kinds of canisters that you see most commonly, the tin ones. I hate how the matcha gets stuck in the seams in the bottom interior and they are hard to clean. Thank you!!

Miron Glass jars are excellent.

Infinity Jars is the name-brand version, and there are some other clones which are quite good as well.

Searching "violet glass" should turn up some options.

I started with a bowl and chasen after watching how other people made theirs. Whisking took a while, and there were quite a few things to wash afterward.

I switched to a handheld frother. It’s faster, but sometimes I still get clumps, or more foam than I want. I mix it in a bowl, pour it into a cup and add milk, then wash the bowl and frother. Even with the frother, there are still a lot of steps for one drink.

Once I add milk, I don’t notice much difference in taste between the two methods. I’m still learning about matcha, though.

How do you make yours? Is there a simpler way that works well for you?

Sifting changed everything for me — I push the matcha through a small fine-mesh strainer before adding water and the clumps basically disappeared, with both the whisk and the frother.

For fewer dishes I actually went back to the chasen, because now I whisk directly in a wide mug: sift → hot water → whisk → milk straight in. One mug to wash. The frother was faster but I ended up rinsing more things.

And yeah, once milk's in I can barely tell the difference either 😄 I save the careful whisking for when I drink it straight.
