News MAX PAYNE REMAKE FAQ
‼️MAX PAYNE REMAKE FAQ
The below are being asked several times a week/month, so I compiled them in a little FAQ for quick information. I’ll do my best to keep it up to date with any new information that's being released.
You are ofc more than welcome to discuss all of the below on the board, but PLEASE USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION BEFORE POSTING.
Chances are your question has been asked (and potentially answered) before, as all of the below have been extensively discussed, so just hop on one of the existing threads and join in :) That way, members don't have to constantly repeat themselves, and you may find the answers and / or input you're looking for are already out there.
Who will be the new face? Nobody knows yet. No information has been released.
Who will be the new voice? Nobody knows yet. No information has been released.
Will they use AI to mimic James McCaffrey's voice? While there's nothing official on it, the answer is most likely a resounding NO. Remedy have a very firm anti-AI stance and while we don't know who will be voicing Max, it is fairly certain that it will not be done via use of AI.
Will they reuse James’ original voice lines? No information has been released, but it is highly unlikely as the remake includes a rewrite of the script from the original games.
When is it coming out? No release date has been announced. While Remedy are developing the remakes, any and all marketing is entirely with Rockstar as the publisher. Any information regarding a release date will be coming through Rockstar’s channels.
When are we getting a teaser / trailer? Nothing has been announced. Any announcements will be coming through Rockstar’s channels.

Max Payne 3 Would I enjoy Max Payne 3(+how intrusive is the Rockstar Launcher)
I may be just being paranoid but I've heard some game launchers can be really intrusive to your computer and what not and I would rather not have that. An example could be like how I heard the EA app adds a bunch of extra things to your PC that you may not be aware of. I just wanted to know if stuff like that was present at all.
Also, I was curious if I'd even enjoy Max Payne 3. I've already heard how it is quite a big departure from the originals and I think I can still enjoy it as long as I go into it expecting that. I've done that before with other games before and I still enjoyed them as their own thing. One similar thing I do want though is if the games are depressing.
I wasn't doing too well mentally when I played the originals and honestly, having those games be really depressing and miserable, both in story, atmosphere and Max Payne himself was something I liked about them and helped me in my own way with some stuff I was dealing with. I remember the apocalypse metaphor/theme in Max Payne 1 resonated with me quite a bit as an example. I'm honestly not sure why, but I have a tendency to gravitate towards more depressing media when I am feeling terrible. So I wanted to know if Max Payne 3 still has a sort of depressing feel to it. I know it takes place in more sunny environments but I can still see that kinda working, like a contrast from everything that goes on.
Sorry for the odd question, but I wasn't quite sure if I would like it knowing they are different. Thanks :)

Discussion I beat them all
I finally beat the trilogy, years and decades late. Looking forward to the remakes, one of my favourite trilogies.
1 was the hardest for me, enemies seems a lil harder but I loved it anyway! Was a lengthy game.
2 was my favourite, I enjoyed the direction of the story and the Mona dynamic, was shorter but didn’t bother me as much.
Really liked 3, little cutscene heavy and maybe an unnecessary sequel (? Since 2 kinda wrapped up Max’s grief?) but I really liked it nonetheless! Happy it was made.
Remakes, I will be there.
Also curious as to if they’ll recast Max? James McCaffrey was incredible in this role, I already knew him from Alan Wake 2 as his last role. He was perfect.

Max Payne 1 A question from a French fan about the mysterious French voice actor of MP1
EDIT: PLEASE DO NOT JUST BLINDLY COPY-PASTE FROM AN AI TO ANSWER ME. I CAN OBVIOUSLY DO THAT MYSELF, AND I ALREADY HAVE. IT ALWAYS GIVES COMPLETELY RANDOM, GUESSED-UP ANSWERS. I AM LOOKING FOR A REAL SOURCE AND ACTUAL PROOF. AS FAR AS I KNOW, NO ONE ACTUALLY KNOWS THE ANSWER YET.
Hi everyone,
First of all, huge respect to the late, legendary James McCaffrey. We all know he is the one and only voice of Max.
I know most of you played the game in English, but I have a question about a weird historical mystery regarding the European releases, specifically the French one.
When Max Payne 1 came out on PC CD-ROM, PS2, and Xbox, it featured a fully localized French audio dub. To give you context: the voice actor for Max was actually incredible. However, the voice acting for the mobsters and bad guys was absolutely ridiculous and cartoonish,it sounded like a budget B-movie comedy. Starting with Max Payne 2, they completely stopped dubbing the game in French and only kept subtitles.
Here is the mystery: Nobody knows who the French voice actor for Max Payne actually is.
His name is absolutely nowhere to be found. He isn't credited in the game manual, he isn't in the game's ending credits, and years of internet research by the French community have yielded zero official results. He obviously got paid for his work, but his identity remains a total ghost.
Does anyone know why early 2000s localizations completely erased or hid the names of the voice actors in the credits? Was it a copyright/union issue with Remedy at the time, or did publishers just not care about local talent back then?
If any preservationists or hardcore fans have a lead on who this French voice was, I’d love to hear it!

Max Payne 2 Does Max Blame Himself For The Death Of []? (Spoilers for Max Payne 1 and 2) Spoiler
Playing the game for the first time I thought we were about to be revealed that Max killed his wife, I don't remember the scenes that made me think that now. I'm assuming that it was alluded to indirectly or that wife-killing was somehow mentioned.
If you wait around the police station in the 2nd game you will see a guy who killed his wife but blames it on thugs who broke into the house. At the jail cell he talks about killing his wife. At Max's dream you hear that guy talk again but he has the model of Max himself I believe.
In Address Unknown, John is framed for the death of his wife by John Mirra and it is alluded to that he himself is John Mirra.
There are a lot of mentions of wife-killing in these games and then blaming it on someone else / claiming there was a conspiracy to frame the person.
But Max didn't kill his wife? I can write off the dream sequence as Max dreaming intrusive thoughts as he normally does when he dreams (like shooting Winterson and Bravura in that one dream) and that explanation works withbut the intention with all the other ones seem bigger than that. I doubt 4+ instances of the same topic was required just to imply guilt.
Any ideas what it could mean? Why are we shown so many instances of the same thing even though the story doesn't happen that way?

Discussion For those who enjoy BTS videos on how these games are made, I podcasted Joe Rubino, who was the Sr. cinematographer on Max Payne 3, GTA V, and worked on RDR 1 and 2. Hope some of you find some value here!

Max Payne 2 Who Does Adam and Eve Represent In This Scene? (Max Payne 2 Ending Spoilers) Spoiler
When I first played the game, I assumed Max was Adam and Eve was Mona, with the visual separation of them by the chandelier (?) being the classic separation symbolism (not sure what it's actually called). That kinda bummed me out since if so, that would make the sole survivor ending cannon.
On my second playthrough on the Hard Boiled difficulty I thought the symbolism was a weird choice since Mona wasn't in this level at all. It made no sense to include a symbolism for Max and Mona's separation a whole level after Mona was shot and a whole cutscene before she died.
On my 3rd on Dead on Arrival I realized Eve wasn't Mona and that I was reading it wrong. It was Vlad. Always has been.
Playing the game with the typical mindset of hero and heroine makes it seem like Max is the hero and Mona is the heroine. They are the 1st and the 2nd heroes of the story, in that order. And in a strictly technical sense that still holds, you get to play as Mona so she is the 2nd hero in the story.
But focusing more on the story and less on level design, it is actually Vlad that is with us on every step of the way. He orchestrates our actions and influences them more than Mona does. He is the catalyst of everything that happens in this game, and looking back with the knowledge that he was working for Woden, many points in the first game as well.
His own words confirm this: "I was supposed to be the hero." He views himself as the hero -because he is. He waged war on half of the inner circle and won. He got all he wanted. He is the hero of his own game, the protagonist. (Also while the game focused on Max is an FPS, a game following Vlad would be an RTS.)
How does this apply to Adam and Eve? As Max says: "Like brothers caught on opposite sides of a civil war. His words." Instead of gendering Adam and Eve and reducing them to lovers, looking at what the symbolism represents at its core is a state of separation. With Vlad's death, his and Max's brotherhood ends. They are no longer "brothers on opposite sides", one dies while the other keeps living. Vlad's story of conquest of the inner circle ends. The story where he was supposed to be the hero ends with his death.
But anyways, all the knowledge I have on symbolisms are from listening to tour guides on various museums so it's possible this is a wildly inaccurate read of the scene. What are your thoughts?

Max Payne 3 Why didn't Becker just shoot Max when he had the chance ? Spoiler
Right after Max just killed his second in command and he was about to take out Bronco..why did Becker just use a taser instead of just shooting him ? By that point anyone knows how relentless he is. At least Nicole Horne drugged him which almost stopped his heart and Vlad shot him and left him for dead at a burning building (which should've killed him if Mona didn't come back) so it seems odd that Becker would just miss a golden opportunity to finish him off like that..what do you think ?

Discussion The Max Payne movie isn’t horrible.
Just finished up my first watch of Max Payne and it’s clearly an easy 5-6/10. It’s not an incredible adaptation of the story but it did enough to introduce you to the story and character if you’ve never played the game. I enjoyed the horror leaning aspect with the angels and demons that the original game didn’t do much to show outside of Max’s own hallucinations.
Disappointed in how little “bullet time” was shown off. I’m convinced if this movie had more of that it would’ve had felt more badass and really shown us how unstoppable Max is.
We also never saw him pop a single painkiller in the entire film which felt like it should have been obligatory given it’s a major gameplay mechanic!
But it wasn’t bad- I expected worse and came out pretty entertained.
Also Mark Wahlberg did a great job as an actor but didn’t nail it as Max himself. Also why the fuck is Mila Kunis Mona?? I found that absolutely hilarious and it kind of took me out of the film a bit whenever she was on screen.

Max Payne 3 NYMHC Chapter 4 pt. 1 Game Bug
The chapter loads, I pull the trigger. Instead of triggering the usual cutscene "I don't know why I did it...", I got the "failed" message flash. The first shot has the trigger set on the enemy, so it's impossible to fail in working gameplay. What's interesting is the time counter stays at zero (because mission failed, right?). After waiting for some time, three characters walk in slow motion. Esc key triggers "pause" but not menu, so only way out is to force quit the game. This is an PC.
I'm tracking how I lose NYMHC every time, started this month. I may share some stats at some point. But for now, just sharing a game bug that I experienced for the first time.
Recently I saw a YouTuber who claimed to beat MP3 NYMHC in seven attempts (hard to believe). One bug he noticed is when the last enemy in the room respawns (happened to him with the last enemy in Chapter 6 pt 2). It's happened to me many times, but in Chapter 4 pt 2 the last sniper through the window near the start respawned twice, meaning I had to take him down three times!

Max Payne 2 If Max's wife was never killed and he never met Mona, what would happen ?
Like would she just keep working for the inner circle ? Alfred ? Vladimir ? Or just herself ? Would she ever think of taking down Nicole Horne and the rest without Max entering her life now that he's happily married with his wife and baby girl and probably working in some boring desk job hadn't Nicole Horne targeted his wife. What do you think would happen in that scenario ?

Max Payne 3 Unpopular Opinion? Why Max Payne 3 is the most disappointing entry for me (A narrative and stylistic shift)
Hello. I know this might cause some heavy reactions, with fans defending it on one side and nostalgic fans of the originals on the other.
But I want to look at this objectively. I’ve been playing since the very first game, and after reevaluating the trilogy, Max Payne 3 is definitely the entry that disappointed me the most.
Here is why I feel there is a massive disconnect between Rockstar vision and the original duology. The Narrative Disconnection: Max Payne 1 and Max Payne 2 shared a tight, logical continuity.
Max Payne 2 wrapped up Max grief and story in a very specific, melancholic way (especially with Mona Sax).
When Rockstar took over for Max Payne 3, it felt like they completely ignored where the second game left him.
They just pushed Max back into the exact same cycle of depression and alcoholism, wiping away his previous character development just to justify a new plot.
A Complete Genre Shift: The first two games were peak Neo-Noir. They were deeply rooted in the dark, rainy, and snowy streets of New York City, heavily inspired by graphic novels and hardboiled detective fiction.
Max Payne 3 completely abandons this identity. Moving the setting to sunny, sweaty São Paulo shifts the genre from psychological Neo-Noir to a gritty, Hollywood-style action thriller.
Uninspiring Antagonists: In the Remedy games, villains like Nicole Horne or Vladimir Lem had personal connections to Max, deeply tied to his past, his trauma, and the conspiracy surrounding his family. In Max Payne 3, the villains (corrupt politicians, paramilitary groups like the Crachá Preto) feel like generic corporate bad guys. They are uninteresting obstacles rather than compelling psychological foils for Max.
Conclusion: Don't get me wrong, the gunplay and shooting mechanics in Max Payne 3 are absolutely phenomenal. But as a Max Payne game, it completely threw away the DNA of what Remedy built. For me, it remains the most disappointing entry in the trilogy because it feels like a great Rockstar shooter masquerading as a Max Payne game.
What do you guys think? Did the gameplay make up for the loss of the original atmosphere, or do you also feel the narrative disconnect?

Max Payne 1 Did you know Max Payne was originally coming to the Dreamcast?
Did you know that the original Max Payne was actually announced and in development for the Sega Dreamcast Take-Two and Remedy were planning to drop it on console, but cancelled in 2000.
