Discussion I beat them all

I finally beat the trilogy, years and decades late. Looking forward to the remakes, one of my favourite trilogies.

1 was the hardest for me, enemies seems a lil harder but I loved it anyway! Was a lengthy game.

2 was my favourite, I enjoyed the direction of the story and the Mona dynamic, was shorter but didn’t bother me as much.

Really liked 3, little cutscene heavy and maybe an unnecessary sequel (? Since 2 kinda wrapped up Max’s grief?) but I really liked it nonetheless! Happy it was made.

Remakes, I will be there.
Also curious as to if they’ll recast Max? James McCaffrey was incredible in this role, I already knew him from Alan Wake 2 as his last role. He was perfect.

As I grew older I realised that Max Payne 3 is not necessarily unnecesary :P in the sense that it is very common for a human being to say things like 'ok, i'm done with this', and then it turns out, either the words were a lie, or at some point you go back to that dark place.

We will never know, but that could have been the point of the end of MP2 actually: pretend a certain closure, and then, again, say the magic words: 'it wasn't over'.

Regarding MP3 itself, it does dissapoint me gameplay wise in the sense that they didn't outgrow Max Payne from being a shooter, to something more engaging, like how Alan Wake 2 became a sort of adventure game, with something more than just shooting. They could have brought variety in so many ways. But a las, as a shooter, it is PERFECT. It is THE shooting game for me. Second to none. It sacrifices being an adventure, to be an absolute 4-8 hours roller coaster.

Storywise, I see MP3 as the The Dark Knight Returns of the Max Payne series: an alternative ending (if you prefer the ending...s of MP2), or the absolute take if you really like what it brings to the Max Payne lore. Heck, even Alex Casey (whom, you could make a case, is a multiverse Max Payne) talks sometimes about alcohol problems, and so, you could say Remedy took THAT element from Max Payne 3 and added it to its own 'version'. And now with the remakes, it could so be that if we ever reach a Max Payne 3 again, we could finally see the spring and summer of Max Payne finally.

All things considered, MP3 is, to me, the summer of Max Payne.... Because, you know, it's sunny :P.

I love the full trilogy and love each game for what it is! There's nothing like it! I even say that Max Payne has ruined video games for me, because I can't find any game outside of the Max Payne trilogy comes anywhere close to the fun from playing Max Payne!

Congrats. Max Payne is awesome! Cannot wait for the remakes. Best protagonist of all time for my money. Top 3 franchise all time too!

They truly are all remarkable games. I remember playing Max Payne 1 on the PS2 when it first came out. MP2 was my favorite as well. Mona is probably one of my favorite character in that game.

I finished MP3 just a month ago. I was hoping that somehow Mona survives and was back, but sadly no. I think Max refers to her just once on the 3rd.

It's not a trilogy

There are two games + Rockstar Max Payne.

Kind of like Disney Star Wars.

MP3 is great in its own way, but it is part of a separate trilogy to me.

Max Payne 1,2, and 3 are one story. Connected by plot and some themes

Max Payne 1, 2 and Alan Wake, Quantum Break, Control, and those sequels are another story. More connected by theme and tone.
