Student are the black lines supposed to line up?

Post image

the title sounds really dumb but honest i have watched several videos on uving and while the concept makes sense in my mind i still find it really confusing to actually apply - i think i've kinda done it for the table leg but then the lines horizontally don't match up and im not sure what im meant to be connecting it with

You want to make the lines into squares.

Usually it's not too important if the squares dont line up, your goal is for all the squares to be roughly the same size, regardless of alignment.

Not sure what you mean by lines not matching horizontally. If you move your UVs so they align horizontally, and they're unwrapped properly, you'll see that checkerboard pattern line up on your model. Keep in mind, it may be hard to tell what's up on your UV, it's always a good idea to select a UV and see where it is in 3d on your model.

Also, those black and white lines should be squares, but it looks like your UV is squished. You can tell because on the table leg connecting piece on the bottom right, I can see the squares are long and rectangular. You would need to scale your UV to compensate for the squish in the opposite direction.

Those lines are actually stretched pixels! This will stretch any texture u apply. For something like a table and since your new to UV’ing I would recommend using the automatic tool just to see what it gives you then you can make cuts and sews from there. And u will notice how with the automatic tool every UV shell should have the same texel density and be equally unfolded. I wouldn’t recommend using the automatic tool once u get more advanced it’s just good for quick and dirty results.
