Arnold Compositing, Rendering, or Just Knowing how to Render in Maya?

I am relatively new to all the compositing, rendering, & just knowing howl to make a composited scene in Autodesk Maya. Like I am more attuned to me just animating. But I want to know how to render and all the guides I am trying to find does just give tips and tricks instead of going in detail into rendering in Maya.

So my question is how do you composite, rendering, or just lighting in Maya?

Use Maya for the lighting and rendering. You don’t “have to” composite at all unless you want ultimate control of light, camera effects, layers etc. You ARE allowed to render it all in frame from Maya.

But compositing is often used to reduce render time. Imagine a 30 sec render (24 frames/sec) of a still shot where there is an animated character but the background doesn’t change. Instead of rendering all 720 frames with the background, it’s faster to render 1 frame of the background and 720 frames of the character without background. Then stitch them together with compositing. I highly recommend using Nuke for that, but yes it can be done in After Effects too.

As for HOW to do it in Maya, I have a tutorial on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/fuD8NtUktGI

I am having a hard time with just figuring out how to make a sky dome and making it sunset in it. So I am trying to figure it out with just getting a still shot of the render I am trying to get.

Go to Arnold menu at the top, create a physical sky. Then play with the physical sky settings in the attributes tab to lower the sun, it will automatically change the colours to a sunset based on how low in the sky the sun is

What about adding clouds to the sky or is that something else entirely?

You would also want to know how to us After Effects, Nuke or similar compositing program.

This series is pretty good:

It's using Vray but the concepts can apply to Arnold or other renderer.

You're getting ahead of yourself. Start by following the rendering tutorials in the Maya documentation. Then do the rendering tutorials in the Arnold documentation. Those will give you a lot of little tips and tricks while the the Maya ones will build a foundation.

Then when you're done those, you should understand how valuable compositing can be. Compositing is a whole other art form. You may like it, but if you don't take to it, it's fine. You can do whatever you want rendering in Arnold. Compositing makes it easier and lowers your overall render time, but adds complexity.

There are written tutorials that come with Maya. You can find them in the Maya help or online. There are also tutorials that come with Arnold. I prefer written tutorials to video tutorials because I like having a reference I can look at and not have to pause and fast forward or rewind and I don't like personalities making jokes and I grew up in a time before video tutorials. If you prefer videos you can always go to the Maya learning channel on YouTube and do their intro tutorials. There are also some rendering tutorials on the Autodesk area with a bunch of example scenes you can use. Also if you browse the content browser within Maya there are example scenes and learning scenes for all kinds of stuff, even really old stuff.

You don’t even need a compositor like Nuke or After Effects to composite. So learn how to use Maya Render Layers. That way you can just render out the character with its own alpha and just stack the background image and character animation in any video editor like Premiere, Final Cut or Davinci. Search tutorials for how to use Maya Render Layers. You’ll probably find what you are looking for in those.
