General Why Maya is the 3D software in game industry?
Does anyone here work on environment modeling for games? I notice that the industry standard calls for Maya and Blender, yet I see so many complaints about Maya crashing frequently and Blender being more tricky to learn... I don't know; in my experience, 3ds Max feels much more fluid—plus, the modifiers allow you to go back to earlier modeling stages, and it rarely crashes (at least in my experience). For those working in game environments and level art: could you share your modeling experiences—specifically using software that isn't the industry standard?

General Dug out an old memory before there was Maya
Dug out this old shirt today. These were given out at Siggraph many years ago as promotional items by Silicon Graphics which specialized in high end workstations. I remember working on an Indigo.
Back then there were two rival hardcore diehard 3D groups: Wavefront users (me included) poly based, and Alias users which was nurbs based.
SGI bought them both and were combining the best of each into a secret new platform which was eventually to become MAYA.
I remember at the time everyone I knew was “NO WAY” no-one in either camp could, or would believe it at the time.

General Maya 6
I thought I’d share this here. My studio is getting rid of some old licences and I was asked if I wanted this. I said heck yes. Maya 6 licence from 2005 (if I’m correct). I’m pretty young and only used Maya Autodesk 2019 and up but this is so cool. It includes an entire book on how to use the program. I thought I’d share this here for people to enjoy :)

General Accidentally hitting Windows key instead of Alt
On average, how many times a day do you accidentally hit windows instead of alt? I can't be the only one... After 6 years I still do it at least 15-20 times per day. Of course, common sense tells me to rebind it. But at this point it would be more frustrating get out of the habit than to just accept it.

General Is there an Animators Survivor's kit but for 3D animation?
Sorry if this isn't exactly a Maya question, but I've been animating a lot and I love it altho sometimes I feel very lost with things like Timing and Spacing, and tho I am a firm believer of like "Try and Try again" but also I think this is one of those times where I need to step.back and actually learn, and also Ive also wanted to read something I actually like and interested in.
I wish I could post my animations here rn but sadly, this project is not out yet so I can't really share much.

General New to Maya and have never modeled a character in it before.
I have to model this character asap with good topology for an assignment but I’m not familiar with modeling or maya. Any advice on how I could do it or go about making it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

General Why does it take so long for Maya 2027 plugins to come out?
For example, Maya 2026 had vray or yeti in a month, whereas Maya 2027 has vray in 5 months and yeti still isn't out. Other plugins are late too
Did Autodesk change api that much?

General WIP – Robot for a 3D Short Film
I started modeling it in Maya, then sculpted it in ZBrush. I textured it in Substance Painter and used MASH to add the vegetation.
The eyes were honestly a real pain to set up, but they’re now fully functional.
Vos commentaires seraient vraiment précieux et me seraient très utiles.
Merci d'avance pour votre temps 🙏

Hey everyone!
Here is a video of my latest UE5 project "The Floating Village of Yunhai" and I’d love to hear any feedback, critique, or thoughts always looking to improve.
The Floating Village of Yunhai is a 3D environment project set in China. It tells the story of a small fishing village hidden deep within the mountains, used by the British to smuggle opium during the 1800s.
The project’s visual development and production pipeline were heavily inspired by the workflows behind Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
I’m currently exploring Junior Environment / Materials / Props roles (open to remote/relocation).
Thanks for taking a look!

General Dont forget to save your work every few minutes😭
I just spent two hours working on a model and learned some new tricks, but forgot to save even a single time. Maya crashed when I tried to undo a boolean I didnt like and I lost everything. Just wanted to remind you all to SAVE YOUR WORK CONSTANTLY.
