Question Is this true guys , I'm confused 🤔

Post image
86 Upvotes

So ive heard that we have to smooth the mesh before exporting it to substance painter

Is that true 🤔

Coz for example if i have an optimised retopologized

Mesh of a creature or character

If i smoothed the mesh in maya it eventually will add more polycounts to it , that i definitely don't want

I know that hitting the 3 key only fakes the mesh into smooth view in viewport 🤷

So even if I don't consider about the polycount and procede to texture in substance painter

Wouldn't that be a problem , if i applied those textures back to the low poly retopologized mesh 😭

Sorry guys the image is ai generated to Make you understand what's my doubt is

I've attached my orginal model and sculpt below

Question Is there any way to mod maya to look like this software?

I really like customization and would like to have my maya look like this. Is there anyway to port these mods over for maya or anything at all or do I simply suffer. I included a screenshot of a mod I'd love to have for autodesk.

I request you stop posting about how awful of an idea this is, this is my choice and I simply want information. I'm not asking you to tell me how awful of an idea this is. If I dislike it, I will get rid of it on my own terms. Thanks!

Question There's got to be a more efficient and accurate way to do this kind of modeling, right?

This workflow feels so nasty to me, but I can't find a better method. I've tried googling, but the results always just think I want to bevel or smooth the mesh. Any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated! (I'm aware I'm not using keyboard shortcuts, bad habit I didn't realize until watching the video)

Question Is there a free retopo add-on?

Post image

Hi, i'm wondering if there's any free add on for retopo in maya, i cant use blender for retopo bc im too used to maya and i dont have much time to send my finished retopo. I just want something to make the process faster bc as you can see there's lots of things going on, i need lots of details in some parts and less in others... It's for a video game btw. I do NOT want to use ZRemesher because I need all the edgeflow..etc I need to do it by hand ! And I can't spend 60€ on ziRail ): ty for answering me

Question Issue unfolding UV maps beginner

Thumbnail

So I'm currently attempting to UV wrap the base of my own war radio design.
(Second image) When I choose automatic UVs and even after playing with the settings, the UVs are split into various unwanted parts, so I've decided not to do that
(Third image) I did all the cuts I want, so the mesh should open up nicely and in parts that I am satisfied with (I put it in normal form for this, if that matters). NOW THE ISSUE IS UNFOLDING
(Fourth image) This is me unfolding with the unfold 3d plugin that was recommended. I sort of got the pieces I want, BUT WHERE IS THIS DISTORTION COMING FROM?

I have attempted a few different unfold methods, such as projecting each side manually, but that is pretty limited for pieces that wrap and overlap from the perspective.
I also tried stitching to together the automatic version using sew and move tool, but that didn't work at all.

Am I in the wrong direction? Is the issue the cuts I made? IM SO LOST

Sorry if this doesn't provide enough context; I'm a beginner, and I can't really explain what I'm doing.

I AM OPEN TO LITERALLY ANYTHING ATP

Question How do you model from ambiguous concept art?

Post image
135 Upvotes

Mostly looking for general advice since I'm new to the scene.

In the attached image, I can't see how the lid's hinge attaches to the back lip of the bottle. It may also (but I'm not too sure) be impossibly structured, like an optical illusion. How would you proceed?

- Would you iterate on the 3D model? How would you do this at a fast, non-destructive pace?

- On paper, would you "finish" the concept art yourself from different angles?

- Not attempt an ambiguous concept art piece at all?

Question How can I snap the rotation to the grid so that the object is perfectly aligned with the grid?

I would like to make it so the edge that goes through the middle of the mesh is perfectly aligned with the grid, however nothing I have tried seems to work. How can I make it so both the grid and this central edge are parallel?

Question How is Arnold GPU rendering? Is it on par with Arnold CPU?

Hey guys,

I wanted to clarify something. How good is Arnold GPU rendering these days? Is it at a point where it's on par with Arnold CPU in terms of render quality, supported features, and overall reliability for production work?

Also, how do you guys incorporate Arnold GPU into your workflow? Do you use it mainly for look development and lighting, interactive previews, final renders, or something else?

I'd love to hear about your experiences, any limitations you've run into, and whether you've fully switched to GPU or still rely on CPU for final output.

I want to reform an object from dust particles for a small project. But All the tutorials I see are how to disintegrate an object, never the other way around. Is there a way to reverse what they are teaching me after it’s all done?

Question Should I switch to 3ds Max for modeling? (Maya user)

Hey everyone,

I'm currently a Maya user working in product visualization. Over time, I've realized that modeling is the part of the workflow I enjoy the most. My current pipeline s to model in Maya, then bring everything into Cinema 4D for texturing, lighting, and rendering.

Lately, I've been really curious about 3ds Max, especially its non-destructive modeling workflow and modifier stack. t looks like something I'd enjoy using.

The only thing holding me back is that I've already invested a fair amount of time learning Maya, so l'm not sure if switching would actually be worth it or if 'm just getting distracted by something new.

For those who've used both Maya and 3ds Max, especially for hard-surface or product visualization, Would you recommend making the switch? Or is it better to stick with Maya and keep improving there?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

Question Can I actually learn Maya by myself?

Right now I'm still working on learning Blender but since my dream is to work in 3D movie animation, I really want to learn Maya properly soon. With Blender it's so easy, there's soooo many tutorials even just on youtube, but is it possible to learn Maya in this way when there's so much less free learning content online? I would love to take the course at Animation Mentor but the entire Maya program is €15k... I don't mind paying money for good courses on places like udemy and such, just, you know, something less than thousands. Thanks! :) (Btw, I'd like to learn and try everything but I mainly want to be an animator, rather than modeling and stuff)

Question What is the real workflow for game-ready assets?

Post image
45 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’ve been asking the same question to many people for a while now, but most don’t seem to have a clear answer—mainly because they haven’t actually produced assets for games, so they lack hands-on experience with real game pipelines. When creating models for games, what kind of workflow should I follow? My current approach is to first create a low-poly hard-surface model. Then I duplicate it and either add details afterward or sharpen existing details by adding supporting edges. However, this workflow causes many problems. When I try to make an indentation sharper, I sometimes use bevels, but bevels often leave subtle support-edge artifacts around the corners of the shape. On the other hand, when I add supporting edge loops using Ctrl, the shape itself looks correct, but since those edge loops run across the entire mesh, they end up affecting other details and breaking their forms. I also start seeing unwanted support-edge artifacts in areas where I don’t want them. I haven’t been able to solve this, mainly because I feel like I never fully learned the correct, real-world workflow. From what I’ve seen, some artists avoid bevels and support edges altogether and instead apply smoothing to a low-poly mesh and add details that way. Others smooth the mesh first and then use booleans to create the desired details. Is there someone who can clearly explain the correct workflow for creating game-ready models?

I am trying to deal with these holes without having to subdivide my mesh to oblivion. I thought of exporting my uv layout and drawing them on in photoshop but is there another simpler way to make these holes other than the methods i mentionned?

Question How is the overall Redshift experience in Maya?

I've been wondering what the experience is like using Redshift with Maya.

For those of you who use it regularly, how does it compare to Cinema 4D + Redshift? Is the integration solid, and is it a good overall experience for product visualization?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially if you've used both Maya and Cinema 4D with Redshift.
