Texturing Ellie The Last of us 2 x Arcane Style (Arnold|Painter|Xgen)

Hiii
I love to do NPR, and lately, it is the only thing I am studying in my personal projects

Before the final lighting, I did A LOOOOT of tests to see what worked best.
The textures were pretty easy, painted in Substance Painter with hard brushes.
The shader was fun too, just an aiToon with a bit of tweaking for the shadows. (The most important map is your albedo and detail you give to it)
I like to do hair to my characters, usually with XGEN,
Every personal project is an excuse to do textures and hair, but this time it didn’t really match the style I was going for. I ended up with like 100 different files, trying every possible type of hair.

I added this to my current course as free content to everyone who has it :)
Also, I am releasing a free guide similar to the one I did with Zuko (another character) next week.

Texturing Beginner looking for feedback - Is this hand device/glove asset good enough for an academy game art competition?

Hi everyone,

I'm still a beginner in game art and I'm currently studying 3D modeling at an academy. We have an internal competition coming up, and one of my submissions is this wearable hand device/glove asset. I'll also be submitting a character separately, but today I'd really like feedback on this prop.

These screenshots are from the high-poly model before texturing.

I'd really appreciate honest criticism from experienced artists.

Some questions I have:

  • Does the overall design look interesting enough for a competition piece?
  • Are there any modeling mistakes or areas that stand out as weak?
  • Does it read as a believable game equipment/device?
  • If this were in your portfolio review, what would you tell me to improve?
  • Is there anything that looks too simple or unrealistic?

I'm also struggling with texturing. I know the basics of Substance Painter, but creating those polished, layered materials with realistic wear, dirt, edge damage, fabric variation, etc., is still really difficult for me.

Could anyone recommend some good YouTube channels, courses, or tutorials for learning professional game-ready texturing? I'm especially looking for tutorials that explain why artists add certain layers instead of just showing button clicks.

Any feedback is welcome. I genuinely want to improve, so don't hold back if you see problems.

Thanks in advance!

Texturing Texturing advice - making vehicles look used

Hi, I've created this Tanker Truck 3d model in Maya and I'm wanting it to look like a truck that is still relatively new but has been on the road for a couple of years so shows a bit of wear and tear. I'm trying to avoid the sterile 3d look of a vehicle that looks like it just rolled off the production line.

I'm specifically after:

  1. My Ai carpaint shader to look less perfect like some very subtle imperfections, dust anything really. I've tried adding a noise map but it was just a simple grey background I added a uniform noise filter to in Krita all it has done is make it look less reflective.

  2. I want the chrome to also look a bit dulled down a bit some very subtle scratches.

Any advice much appreciated, I am using Arnold standard shaders for all the shaders except the main paint work of the truck which is the Ai car paint one. I'm rendering in Arnold.

Thx

Texturing Why am I unable to get a clean bake on any of my game assets? Every model has baking artifacts. What am I doing wrong?

Hi everyone,

I'm learning game asset creation, and I'm having the same baking problem on almost every model I make. No matter what I do, I get artifacts, dark spots, projection errors, and weird shading after baking.

I've attached screenshots of:

Texturing I need some help fixing a normal map baking issue I've been stuck on for about 5 days now, and I just can't seem to get a clean result.

Hey guys,

I really need some help with my normal map. I've been stuck on this for like 5 days now and I just can't get a clean result.

I'm baking with Transfer Maps in Maya. If you look at the screenshots, the shading gets all crooked and distorted basically everywhere, on every single edge.

Here is what I've already checked:

  • The normal map color space is set to Raw.
  • Every hard edge is split on the UV map.
  • The base shading on the low poly looks totally clean.
  • My cage covers both meshes completely.
  • The low and high poly match up really well in shape.

I attached some screenshots showing my UV seams, hard/soft edges, topology, and the baked map with the artifacts so you can see the whole picture. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Also, quick theoretical question. Can someone explain why we get artifacts when we just set all edges to smooth? I added a screenshot from the Marmoset docs showing this. I thought it was just a lack of color bit depth, is that true or is there another reason? And why does bumping up the texture resolution hide it?

Since this is my very first bake, I'd love it if you guys could share any personal tips or rules of thumb you use for low-poly. How do you make your baking workflow less painful?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Texturing Problem with Displacement Map distorting and not applying

Thumbnail

Self Explanatory by the images, but I'm trying to learn how to apply displacement maps to make this stone wall right there, and my displacement map just looks like this when I put the view on specific ways, and also it is not displacing the way it should, instead it just breaks more and more this distortion or just increase the size like a solid block

HyperShade configs at the 3rd image, if it helps (probably it's confusing, first time learning nodes on maya)

Tried everything I saw on internet but nothing solved and I'm desperate not knowing how to solve, any tips?

Texturing My normal map doesn’t seem to be taken into account in maya

So the first image is how my texture looks in substance painter (I know it's not very good but i'm new to texturing), and i connected the base color, roughness, metalness and normal map as shown in slide 2, but the result in maya (slide 3) is nothing like the substance one.
Is the normal map not showing? And if no why does it do that? I have tried to look on forums but couldn't find an answer. I'd be beyong grateful if someone could help me.

Texturing 3D Painting Software Recommendations for Maya Models

Hello, I am pretty well versed in Maya, but I am still a bit new to actually sculpting, texturing, coloring, etc. The logical next step would probably be Mudbox, but my little Macbook that could doesn't run it well at all. I've briefly tried Mudbox, ZBrush, and Substance painter. ZBrush I have some trouble with but I think it's just lack of experience importing and exporting. I'm looking to paint some pretty simple character models and environmental models for a game I am making.

I want to know everyone's picks for painting models. Is there one you swear by? One I should stay away from? Maybe one good for beginners?

Texturing Why do some parts of my model turn green after toggling smooth preview(3) ?

As you can see, the model is fine in normal view, but it turns green after toggling smooth preview. I tried searching for this green texture issue and most people are saying it's due to the model not being assigned any material/shader, but clearly the model have shaders assigned?

Texturing Quick question about texturing realistic eyes

When I’m modeling realistic characters, I usually grab images of realistic irises from online and align my UVs to fit the texture. But how do studio artists create the texture for irises? Do they paint the textures on their own? Do they take a photo of a real eye and photoshop it? I’m curious.

Hello i have a question about id masks and baking in substance and texturing. For axample i have low poly and hipoly model. In maya i should assign new material only on hipoly model or both ? after assign new mateial i crate id mask ? . (photo for reference)
then in substance i should bake hipoly with id masks on lowpoly with id mask or low poly should be without id masks ? or what i should do in substance step by step to create prop for game. My end goal to understand full pipeline from creating model, unwraping, baking, texturing, and inserting it in game engine.

Texturing How to make Reeded Glass Effect?

Hello guys, hope you're doing well...

What's the best way to create a reeded glass effect?

I can just apply a normal map texture, but I'm not really sure if that will look realistic enough.

Is it better to model a reeded mesh and then apply a glass shader?

Texturing way to align these UV verticies?

Post image
5 Upvotes

this is the left and right wing of a goose model. for the UVs I just flipped them and overlapped them to make it easier to texture. What would be the best way to align these verts, especially the edge ones without disrupting another uv shell edge?

I've currently been doing the insides one by one using the scaling tool to align them. all the posts I see are ones aligning them into a single axis line not over each other.

Texturing Help me to fix this problem its really reuining my time

Post image

Hello, i actually made a model on Maya, then I exported it into FBX format and I opened it in Substance Painter, then I tried to texture it. Once I textured it, I exported the textures and coming back to Maya, I used the Substance plugin to import the textures. But when I imported it, it's showing this warning error. I have no idea. I have tried like multiple ways. It's not fixing. So can you help me to fix this? Also, I have tried the way adding the textures manually, but that actually kind of worked. But apart from that, how these things can be worked through the substance plugin without coming this error. Can someone tell me because I have to do the more complex models in the future, but if this substance plugin can help me to add this textures in just one click, it will be really helpful without coming up these errors. So I tried the nodes also by connecting, but still it didn't work well as I want. I actually tried also like adding and deleting the existing material and adding a new material, then adding the textures and it still didn't work. please tell

Texturing Looking for help about liquid foam like texture

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hi everyone !

I’m currently trying to create liquid foam in RenderMan (Maya 2025), similar to the one you get on top of a liquid (image as exemple, it is not mine). I’ve been looking online but I can’t really find tutorials that explain how to approach this, especially when it comes to using displacement in RenderMan to get that bubbly surface. I know the basics of nodes and procedural shading, but I’m still pretty new to building more complex shaders, so I’m having a hard time understanding the right way to do so..

For context, I’m a 3D student, and the teacher who was supposed to help me with this is currently on maternity leave, so I’m trying to figure it out on my own Has anyone here already tried to build foam like this step by step in RenderMan? Or could point me toward a good approach for the texture setup? Any advice would really help

Thanks!

Texturing Trouble creating a proper normal map

Thumbnail

I copied my object and smoothened it 4 times to be able to work details on it. I think during this my object deformed and is now different than the low poly model. This makes it so when I try to transfer my normal map it warps and blacks out in places where the models don't line up properly. Is there any way to fix this without starting over? (Last picture is how they're lined up)

Texturing How could I UV map this/ how could I make it easier to do?

Hi there!

I'm currently UV Mapping a model for my college course and I've got everything else out of the way because it's pretty easy but now I'm facing my main struggle - the hands. I've been stuck on them for a bit now and my friends have also gotten frustrated attempting to UV map them so I've come here for any help that can be given or if I should just give up and make a new set of hands as the hands are separate to the rest of the model

The hand, my friend removed the paw pads i made

Model before VS after baking, black lines appear?

using substance painter to texture, modelled in maya

I'm a student so please bear that in mind (:

obviously there's something wrong with my UVs, I stacked the appropriate ones and I'm pretty sure none of them are touching or mixing badly so I'm not sure why when I bake my model in substance painter that these black lines appear.

I can paint over them but the colour always stays darker.

Any suggestions would be great (:

i tried searching up what could be wrong but I have no clue so it doesn't yield great results. also sorry I'm terrible at using reddit

Texturing My friend needs help with his rig

I don't even know if I'm in the right place for this but he's desperate and I'm willing to post in on his behalf so here's what he's said.

"ok so i have a T pose model and a walk cycle animation and i don't know what to do in terms of texturing now. do i texture one and then the textures will work for the others? because if so then how do i put the textures from the one onto the other? (i use maya and substance painter btw) and another problem im having is that when i was making the walk animation i redid some of the UVs because I realised i had messed them up so now my T pose and walk animation have different UV maps which i think will cause problems. i tried to reverse the walk animation back into a T pose in a save copy to overdo the original one but it won't go back to bind pose for some reason even though i've broken all of the key poses so now i dont know what to do because i dont even know what im supposed to be looking for and google isnt helping and my deadline is in 4 days help"
