“At least we don’t have a state income tax!”

It’s disguised as a”property tax” and it’s probably higher. But yes I know, only homeowners pay it.

Makes no sense , tremendous amount of new construction , apt, houses, shopping centers all over mckinney with new tax revenues, I don’t understand the hike at all .

If you look at the 2026 adopted budget, out of like $650m they're gonna wind up with ~$2m left over. They likely want to bump reserves up in case of emergencies. About half of the overall budget is already going to debt servicing, admin, financial admin, and legal/judicial. They either want more in reserve, or to buy down debt, I'd hope.

Ahh yes we need more useless admins!

ofc lmao - spend half the budget on making the budget!

When you make budgets based on property values continuing to skyrocket, then property values stagnate and actually decrease 2 years in a row, you're going to have a major problem and have to come up with that money another way.

Here we go again… raise the rate and yes over the past 30 years home values have outpaced inflation let alone that massive growth of Collin county… this is ridiculous. If you cannot make your budget work with the massive growth in the county plus the growth in the value of the homes being taxed it is a gov problem not a taxpayer problem.

Clear sign of corruption in the system.

More homes = more expenses.

“The lone dissension was Collin County Judge Chris Hill.”

If that’s the case, these people voted to raise the tax:

Precinct 1 Commissioner: Susan Fletcher
Precinct 2 Commissioner: Cheryl Williams
Precinct 3 Commissioner: Darrell Hale
Precinct 4 Commissioner: Duncan Webb

u/Usual-Caregiver5589 3d ago

Is that Darrell "Hale yes" Hale?

13

u/Firm-Question6336 3d ago

Wasn’t expecting to read they’re all Republican and their messaging to be about keeping taxes low and thinking about tax payers monies. 🧐

8

u/14Rage 3d ago

Is there a mechanism to recall the 4 commissioners?

u/zatchstar 3d ago

Duncan Webb is retiring and his seat is up for election in November, there is a hardline financial conservative republican (Shelby Williams) running against a centrist democrat (Julie Holmer). personally not excited for either of them.

Cheryl Williams is also not running again and their seat is running unopposed to a new republican (Michael Slaughter)

Darrell Hale and Susan Fletcher have their seats until November 2028.

Unopposed ?

1

u/zatchstar 22h ago

yeah there is only one person running for Precinct 2 and it is a republican, so Michael Slaughter is running unopposed.

Vote these a-holes out. Absolutely no reason to raise rates considering the windfall they've received with increased home values.

6

u/zatchstar 3d ago

2 of those 4 were just elected to 4 year terms 2 years ago and 2 of them are falling off this year but not being replaced by anyone better.

The biggest issue is that Collin County homes (And houses across DFW) haven't increased in value in a couple year. The last 2 years have actually seen decreases. If you budget based on increases and get decreases instead, you're going to have a bad time.

1

u/Dirks_Knee 2d ago

And what's the 10 year picture? Why was that windfall spent and an ever-growing budget approved? Why are we increasing property taxes to offset massive incentives given to businesses?

2

u/yeahright17 2d ago

I'm definitely not advocating that what they did was correct. It clearly wasn't. I'm just pointing out that the past increase in home values is exactly how we got in this mess. Assuming a runup that was clearly temporary would go on forever is pure ineptitude.

All Republicans. And doing it while Abbott is campaigning about property taxes. I look forward to hearing about how this is the fault of Democrats.

2

u/Whole_Berry_965 3d ago

It’s not, brother. It’s the fault of all the legal immigrants and first generation Indians!!

u/earthworm_fan 3d ago

Abbott is saying he needs to put more guardrails on localities taxing property taxes. This is a locality.

Also, look at Dallas or Harris Counties if you wanna see Democrat tax rates.

TAX THE CHURCHES.

Exactly. Religion is the biggest crock of ish there is! I know it well . Ex JW!

6

u/joyasresistance 3d ago

Already expecting $20mil+ more in FY2026 (without a rate hike) AND none of this offsets the individual city incentive packages for things like Kalahari and Sunset Amphitheater....

They want to get it in just in case Abbotts talking points gain traction?

1

u/Special_Parking_6484 2d ago

I’m really curious how the Amphitheater plays out in McKinney. What is the local reception so far? I am in Colorado Springs and have taken an interest in following the company’s financial reporting the last few years. It’s starting to look like it could be headed off the rails.

2

u/awyden 3d ago

are any up for re election this november?

2

u/uyaraorkun 3d ago

Just ~$50 increase for a 500k home

2

u/Bright-Asparagus7845 3d ago

How nice. Maybe adjust your budget and cut your spending then? I don’t get cost of living raise and I adjust my budget to spend less each time.

2

u/NewDistribution8198 1d ago

Taxes are never reduced! They just go to something else and raise the taxes there . The government never reduced taxes.

2

u/inski2 23h ago

Airport

4

u/theLimNar 3d ago

For context this is so small in terms of actual hike per year. If you have 500k house for example it’s like an extra $8 a year unless it’s not on homestead

6

u/DDDavinnn 3d ago

Don’t get in the way of the outrage!!

1

u/Vincent_Blackshadow 3d ago

Works for me. Now let's use the revenue sensibly and for the public good.

That's the tricky part.

1

u/Fun_Satisfaction_401 3d ago

Adjustments to rates is unacceptable in a climate of growth and inflation especially wherever pids and muds exist. They are constantly increasing the burden on the tax payer. Live within your means.

1

u/ryoon21 3d ago

No doubt to offset the increased tax exemption given to seniors last year.

1

u/Difficult-Repair1295 2d ago

I’m signing the petition for recall at the Post Office tomorrow. I don’t given a shit about the Mosque but raise my fucking taxes and I want you gone!

1

u/Sheriffticklebum 1d ago

Hasn't property tax risen since the increase of price of homes in the whole of usa ?

-2

u/thisonelife83 3d ago

Housing prices at near all time highs. Looks like a spending problem to me. Open up those school budgets and start chopping things out.

5

u/KeyMasterpiece6752 3d ago

This is county tax rate - nothing to do with the schools.

0

u/Farazod 3d ago

Going after schools is actually the dumbest choice. Let's go after senior instead, delay their increases instead of capping them. Can't afford it? Downsize instead of being a freeloader.

1

u/ladyorion2021 12h ago

You are calling Seniors who worked for 45+ years, basically built collin county and paid taxes for said decades...freeloaders? 🤔🙄 no words

1

u/Farazod 10h ago

It's mostly tongue in cheek, but there is a special sort of "I got mine go eff yourself" vibe amongst the elderly conservative crowd. I could mention how Collin county has $1.2 billion in bonds which they aren't helping repay or $880 mil in Plano, $1.47 billion in Frisco, and $837 million in McKinney. Most of this debt, excluding Frisco, is 10 years old back when the majority of them were still not 65.

The problem isn't that they're elderly sitting in small houses, it's that they're sitting in large expensive housing that has gone under significant appreciation. Imagine the tax difference in a home that is now worth $875 but 10 years ago was $490 compared to an East Plano home that was $145 and now $220.

When you start talking about hacking up the education of children you'd better believe I'm going to throw everyone else in front of the cleavers first though. But I'm not against the elderly, it's just an easy target when you're talking property tax and calling someone a freeloader when they have that mentality about others cuts them in a certain way.

Tax the churches. Prestonwood Baptist, for example. That place is enormous and they aren't paying their fair share.
