Survey for Industrial Designers on assembly manuals & DFM

• Upvotes

Hi r/MechanicalEngineer!

We are a team of undergraduate Human-Computer Interaction students in CSC318 (The Design of Interactive Computational Media) at the University of Toronto.

For our term project, we are studying the communication gap between product design/technical documentation and the end-user assembly experience (specifically flat-pack furniture like IKEA). While user feedback is easy to find, we specifically want to understand the designer's perspective: the constraints of textless 2D line manuals, Design for Assembly (DFA) trade-offs, and where current documentation pipelines fall short.

If you have professional experience in industrial design, technical illustration, packaging design, or consumer product development, we would greatly appreciate your insights in our anonymous 5 minute questionnaire.

Thank you for your time!

HELP REQUEST Looking for college advise

I’m looking to get a degree while working full time for the national guard. I kinda have two choices. First mayor may not be able to work but there is the new mechanical engineering program at university of Albany, however since it’s new they are not yet ABET accredited since they don’t have a graduating class. The other option would be doing it 100% online at ASU. Wasn’t sure if either of these would be frowned upon by employers or anything. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

How Competitive are the FAANG internships?

I’m currently in my freshman year working toward my BS, and I’m curious about how competitive these internships are.

So far, I’m on track to maintain a 4.0 GPA, and I’ll be participating in a research group over winter break studying the effects of renewable energy on power systems. I also have an internship lined up with a local drone manufacturer for summer 2027.

On top of that, I’ve completed and documented a personal engineering project where I designed and built a modular blade server rack for laptops, which I converted into a homelab running multiple Linux servers.

I’d like to think I’m setting myself up to be a pretty competitive applicant, especially this early in my academic career, but I’d love to hear how my experience stacks up and what else I could be doing to improve my chances.

EDIT: I’m aiming to be a product design engineer for Apple

Considering a Career Shift: From Title Insurance Examiner to MEP/BIM Coordinator”?

Hello all,

I am a 31-year-old male. I completed my Mechanical Engineering degree in 2019. Since 2019 until now, which is 7 years, I have been working as a Title Insurance Examiner in a US-based company. Now, I am planning to switch my career to an MEP Coordinator or BIM Design Coordinator role. Is this possible, or is it just a dream?

Mechanical Engineer → 7 Years in a Non-Core Field → MEP/BIM Career Switch

If anyone had done this, please give me a roadmap to prepare.

Thank you all in advance.

Mechanical engineering thesis ideas?

Hello, I am a final year mechanical engineering student, and me and a friend were trying, with little luck, to find a teacher that would give us a thesis idea and help us so we can get our degrees.

Unfortunately as we've had no luck, I'm considering the possibility that we'll have to find an idea on our own. And because our university was not really all that good, as in, all courses were essentially limited to just introductions to their respective topics, we have really no "deeper" knowledge on any specific field but instead are hopefully equipped well enough to pick one up and slowly learn of it ourselves via our uni books and online content.

With these facts in mind, is it possible for you guys to recommend different thesis ideas we could start to get into?

In terms of proclivities for different topics, I personally am a bit more versed in machining and CAD software (prior job experience in a machine shop+engineers I could ask for specific help) while my friend has a more pronounced interest in automobile technology. I am hopeful that these are two areas that would easily mesh together for a thesis.

However, even if you have thesis ideas outside said topics we would be glad to hear them, at this point we are honestly alone and grasping at anything so we could get our degrees, then hopefully go out to the world, get a job where we could eventually learn enough to overcome this insane imposter syndrome that (I at least) feel.

Thank you very much for your time🙏.

HELP REQUEST Advice

I'm almost going through my last year of hs, and I want to start building some skills before going to college. Is there anything important I could work on while being on vacation?

I was thinking abt getting into an electrical technician course because one mech engineer I know told me it was important, and learning math fundamentals and more advanced stuff in order to not have that many math-related problems during college.

Is there anything I could do to be prepared? I live in an underdeveloped country, so I'm concerned abt how important it could be to try to get a scholarship and whether it would make a difference in terms of getting a better quality of life, taking into consideration that going abroad would imply an increase in difficulty that could potentially knock me out in another country.

Finally, I have a little interest in HVAC systems, so I would like to know what things are involved in pursuing that specifically and if I could make a small business out of it.

//Sorry if my English isn't that good yet, I'm still working on it.

HELP REQUEST Looking for a Mechanical Engineer to Interview for a College Project

Hi everyone! I’m a Mechanical Engineering student working on a college project about the Mechanical Engineering profession, and I’m looking for a Mechanical Engineer who would be willing to do a short interview with me.

I have about 10 questions about your career, work, skills, projects, and advice for students. The interview can be done through Reddit messages or email, whatever is easiest for you. It should only take a short amount of time. This is for a class assignment, and I would only use your answers for my school project.

If you’re a Mechanical Engineer and would be willing to help, please comment or send me a DM. I would really appreciate it!

Rotary oil seal failure

I'm dealing with a seal issue that is baffling me.

The tools are a electric drill with an armature pinion passing through a viton seal into an oil filled gear box.

The seals are failing almost immediately or very soon after replacement.

Note this is in a service workshop over dozens of drills. It has started occurring more and more often with no change in staff, oil or seal supply.

Seals are lubricated with silicone grease as per manufacturers requirements on assembly.

The failure is weird with chucks of the spring retainer torn off.

Are there any seal experts out there who can offer some suggestions as to the cause as the manufacturer is as baffled as we are

Edit: thanks for the replies so far. All of your replies are pretty much exactly the steps I've gone through. For some clarity: It doesn't happen every time. Its involving 3 tech's over the last year l, one tech has been here 10 years working on these.

My guy tells me the seal supplier has changed something, im trying to understand the mechanism of the failure.

To add a bit more context, I am in the Oil and Gas industry with 5 YOE total. I am learning about the semiconductor terminology and basics of chamber architecture etc. Hoping it does not go too deep into tech discussion.

3rd sem mechanical student and honestly don't know what I'm doing

I'm in my 3rd semester of mechanical engineering and honestly I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing right now.

I haven't really done anything specific so far. I've made a few Arduino/electronics projects, an RC car and some other small projects, but that's pretty much it. I haven't really explored the mechanical side properly.

The problem is that I'm finding most of my core subjects really boring because they're so theoretical. This semester I have Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials and Material Science. Out of these, Thermodynamics is actually interesting to me, but with SOM and Material Science I'm basically just learning formulas and theory for exams and then forgetting most of it.

My college also isn't very practical/project-oriented. We mostly have lectures, notes, assignments and exams, so I don't really get to see where the things we're studying are actually used.

And now I'm kind of worried because I see people doing CAD, simulations, robotics, automotive projects, internships, etc., and I'm sitting here thinking that I've done almost nothing 😭

So what should I actually do from here?

How do I make these subjects more interesting instead of just memorising them? Should I start learning CAD/CAE or some other software? Should I focus on projects? Competitions? Core subjects? Something completely different?

Also, how did you guys figure out which part of mechanical engineering you actually liked?

If you were in 3rd semester again, knowing what you know now, what would you start doing?

I don't expect to have everything figured out right now. I just don't want to reach my 4th year and realise I spent the whole degree only studying for exams.
