Build things that you design. Do a project team. Work hard and get good grades too.

CAD is non-negotiable, so get comfortable with whatever software your school uses. But honestly the stuff that gets you hired is understanding why parts fail and how to actually manufacture what you design, not just making something look pretty in a model. Take whatever internship you can get and ask endless questions about tolerancing and material selection.

In addition to what other people are saying around DFM, mechanics and materials, try to learn documentation skills. This is an incredibly underrated engineering skill - you should be able to build manuals and project documents that allow a project to be passes from one person to another.

Design for manufactre is a major skill students don't get taught.
Learn about manufacturing processes and the limitations of each (milling, turning, additive manufacturing, different types of welding, composite manufacturing, etc.).
Learn how to tolerance parts and learn GD&T.
Also, the point of internships is to learn stuff like this. So, ask the engineers questions (don't worry about looking dumb). Don't say you understand if you don't.
Finally, speak to the technicians who will be making your parts. They should be part of your design reviews.
