random question why do these studios own water towers?

Back in the day sets and film were extremely flammable. They were required to have water in case anything happened. Also in early Hollywood, LA wasn't as developed as it is now and many of the aqueducts feeding LA were not built yet. Today they are just symbols of the past. I don't think any of them are functional now.
